What I don't like about Catholics...as a Catholic.

Well, I have never heard of any one, when asked, ‘why did you become Catholic’ responding ‘because it’s easy’ :rolleyes:

BUT, there are a number of folx who say, ‘Oh, I’m Catholic. I don’t have to worry about that!’ and relate that response to a number of things they do.:eek:

Things like
… not contributing in church.
… not reading / studying the Bible
… if they do something wrong, they can just go to Confession (even though… it seems, these people never make it to Confession)
… they have Mass for 45 minutes to an hour, rather than the lengthy times for many Protestant services.
…coming to Mass, making an offering, and that’s that: they can get into Heaven, no matter how few works they do, and despite they don’t do anything else to create a relationship with God.

They see it as ‘easy’ even though, no one I’ve talked to can trace back to where they were told that’s enough.

You do have the right to express that! Are people grabbing your hand against your will? That would definitely be inappropriate. If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it.

I want to do it and I will, but I will never grab someone’s hand and yank it up against their will during the Our Father.

None of this is personal. I simply have my character and my way of expressing it, just as you have yours.

As a general observation about today’s society, there is an almost institutionalized position of ‘professional offendee:’

“I’m offended by people who eat meat! I’m offended by people who wear fur! I’m offended by people who refuse to Save The Spotted Owl!”

This works to effectively shut down free speech, which is guaranteed by the American Constitution.

Atheists are professionally offended by any mention of God in the public square, and their professional offense has pushed an agenda that is neither American not Christian.

But they are offended, all right.

You see one poster here made a jab about people not helping around in a parish but could spend plenty time in malls. Guess what pal? What if “hanging in malls” is where that person is more helpful? Sinner or not, a person who “helps around in church” is subject to many standards and stereotypes.

!2 step programs have a saying…"If you want to know how someone is doing?
Ask their wives? basically you can be ‘perfect’ example in Church, but a total jerk outside of Church… showing up doesn’t make you an example of Christ. It is how we live and act towards others that they see the Christ in Us.

sighs Sorry but I can rig this type of thinking to turn on itself.
  1. Contributing to church? What am I? Bill Gates? Oh wait, you mean it doesn’t have to be money? What then? Help around? Ahh but I already addressed a few posts back too.
  2. The Bible’s a good source of insight but that insight is usually buried under allegory, ambiguity, and ancient cultural references. I’d rather put more faith in having it read to me during mass than risk becoming another Martin Luther. 😛 And unless you’re a sucker for old Hebrew culture and mythology, I doubt its any good for pleasure reading either. 😛
  3. Confession, to me, is like going back to the keep to patch up. Some people though, don’t like cooping themselves and go back to world, seeking, adventure, truth, and purpose. The world though is full of danger so it is only expected that along the way, they end up worn and torn by those dangers. However, should they keep going back to the keep for every single injury, their journey would not progress as fast. That’s not to say, they shouldn’t go back ever. It just simply means that their lives don’t make it easy to constantly go back home.
4-5. Aaaand here we can turn your logic onto itself. Who are you to say that its only religious works that God measures? Who are you to say that just because they spend less time in a chapel and more time somewhere else, they do not have a relationship with God? For all you know, you could boast the many times you spent helping out in the parish, attended Mass, and saying countless prayers yet you never cared to visit your family, never helped your friends when they needed you, or ever thought critically for fear of shaking your faith.

Most of your post is absolutely bizarre. Saying “I’m offended by [whatever]” is an example of free speech. It does not work to shut down free speech. And what does eating meat, wearing fur, and refusing to save the Spotted Owl have to do with my request? Atheists are “professionally” offended? I am very confused. I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say here.

People can have discussions without fighting but it takes two to accomplish it without a great deal of restraint from the person who will inevitably be attacked. I have made the gesture and it has been refused.

And I am very, very sad for you as you have refused the request of friendship and amity from your sister in Christ. I wonder if Jesus would refuse my request, too. I don’t think so. And as I am surely the least of His brethren, you are refusing His offer of friendship.

What a sorrowful way to be a Christian! I pity you.
 
I’m offended by people who are offended by offending people! 😛

I’m kidding. I think being offended is what keeps America free and the greatest country in the world. My wife is from the Philippines. When we go there, there is no sense of offense or outrage, period. The air is poluted and intolerable yet the people don’t complain or try to change it. The water is filthy, oh well. The way women are marginalized and treated in so many ways is appauling but, hey, it’s the system, what are ya gonna do? There is wide-spread graft, extortion, bribery, and corruption but they have the mentality that it’s not worth worrying about. The environment is pillaged, animals treated brutally, and I find a lot of it distasteful and appauling.

In California, we don’t like smelling people’s cigarettes so we banned outdoor smoking in public areas. Fine with me. People get mad about the idea of banning plastic grocery bags. All one need do is look at the hundreds of tons of plastic bags that take up miles of Pacific ocean territory killing species off and destroying corral reefs, etc. and I think it’s a perfectly valid ban.

I like restaurant inspectors and regulators making sure my planes are safe and my food isn’t surrounded by cockroaches LOL…complaining can be a good thing!

And it hurt. Very much. Perhaps you don’t think these discussions are important. Well they are.

My request and offer still stand and will always stand, even if you reject me forever.
 
Again, it’s just the innerwebs, just opinions on a forum, nothing personal. But I don’t change my opinions to suit the tide and I imagine neither does anyone else.

If you want to use an image other than plowshares, feel free. And if you are in a praying mood, perhaps you could join me in a prayer for those in Earl’s path.
