My principal at work, who is a power-mongering loon, told me about four years ago, “perception is reality.” She claims if parents think you’re out to get their kid, you are. If they think you’re mean, you are. If they think you’re not telling them everything, you are.:rolleyes: Administration…
Observations are facts now? Stop the presses!

BTW, your 18 and 19 leave me wondering why they are even on the list.

This is a funny thread, but honestly we should look at all the great stuff about Catholicism and not focus on the no-goodnicks of the brand. Every Church has goofballs in it and people who aren’t serious. The Catholic Church has a ton of great people in the ranks, we should focus on them. Just like the clergy. It does not good to say how we hate child-molesters, the ultra minority. That’s a no-brainer. Who doesn’t hate them? We should focus on the good clergy, which are many 🙂

They are risking loosing you with this approach.
Thank you for being a teacher. It is a job that gets so little respect today.

  1. Catholics who wear shorts and sandals at Mass as if they are at the beach
I wonder what the percentage is of those of this group that do not believe in the Real Presence? I am not yet in the Church, but I started attending Mass regularly here in Southern California and I see quite a few dressed as what Nicea describes. It is not my place to judge, and I think it’s wonderful to see people attending period, but I wonder if these same ones would wear this attire to a business meeting, wedding, a visit with the President of the U.S. or the queen of England? Doesn’t God deserve at least the same, if not more? If shorts and sandals are the best someone has, so be it. It can be a touchy subject with some.

Why are you offended?
I was offended by the list. I don’t know why that candle is there! There are a million things I don’t know. As a revert who didn’t understand the Church when I left, I am near the beginning of my path toward God. I didn’t even know there was a candle! I’ve never noticed it.

So yeah, I was offended. The list seems to be very judgmental to me. But that is my opinion. I suppose it’s anyone’s right to make a list like that but they should expect people to be offended.

I guess I took the bait, but I didn’t know it was bait (as nobody does until they are caught). :o

I want to say that being offended is a feeling. It pops into one’s head and it’s just there. There is no control over the feeling showing up. But letting it sit there and fester can cause a lot of problems. I’ll find out why that candle is there and I’ll continue to grow in knowledge about the Church. So it’s not all negative.

I do not presume to answer for anyone, but I can offer that I felt uncomfortable with the entire topic. It seemed to bring more questions than answers.
Thank you. I felt uncomfortable with the topic also. It focuses on the problems but offers little in the way of solutions.

So in order to perceive or note a problem—you need to have a solution on hand?

If everyone fell for that way of thinking, absolutely no problems would ever get solved.

Noting or perceiving a problem is generally not the same as stating “What I don’t like about Catholics…as a Catholic.”

And quite honestly, there is a VERY Simple solution to much of this. Not necessarily all. And it’s called education! One of the most SIMPLE solutions is to talk with your priest and ask (if willing) they will place within your church bulletin little tid bidts of information. Reserve a paragraph space and call it something like… YOU SHOULD KNOW… and then have at it!

Seems to me the OP has found a calling! And should make such a request, as well as volunteer to write this weekly blurb. Siting Cannon and such when appropriate. I think those that didn’t know would really appreciate it. And those that are ignoring it. Well, you’ve done your best!

I don’t have time to take offense, but I can certainly see how painful it might be to hear why someone doesn’t LIKE you because you are easily lacking in some information. That just stings, doesn’t it.

I found an old thread on the candle… that will give you some assistance… Granted based on the title of that thread, I’m thinking the best way to know you’re in a Catholic church, MIGHT be the sign outside. 😉

In my post #67 I stated the following:

Did you read that? Did you understand that I said that I’ll find out why that candle is there and I’ll continue to grow in knowledge about the Church…so it’s not all negative?

The list appeared to be judgmental to me, in my own opinion. And it did not offer much in the way of solutions. But I did say that it is anyone’s right to make a list like that (although they should expect people to be offended).

As for finding solutions, Faithfully has already posted a link to help me find out about the candle. That is a solution that wouldn’t probably have been offered if I hadn’t posted that I was offended about the list.

Of course you don’t need to have a solution on hand in order to perceive a problem. I never stated that and I don’t believe it is true and it’s illogical anyway. The first step is in discovering that there is a problem. But it is also very helpful to have some solutions to offer.

I’m sorry you perceived my post the way you did. Perhaps I did not word it properly although I did the best I could.

Thanks very much for your words and the link. It’s weird to think that I’ve never seen it. I just never noticed it before, but I’ll be sure to look next time I’m in church.

God bless!!

LOL LOL! 😛
  1. Catholics who judge other Catholics and think Protestants are uninformed idiots with no brains.
  2. Catholics who actually believe that everyone who isn’t Catholic isn’t Catholic because they’re only uneducated in the catechism or prideful jerks and the possibility of just not agreeing with Catholicism or its conclusions never enters their minds
  3. Catholics who try to pretend everyone was a Catholic in history who they like i.e. CS Lewis and Shakespeare 😛
  4. Catholics who call you “anti-catholic!” immediately if you challenge an idea or speculate or ask a question
  5. People who put “informed Catholic” or “hardcore Catholic” or “Tiber Swimmer” or “industrial strength” or “fanatical” in their description of themselves as if Catholic isn’t enough they must categorize their brand of it
  6. Catholics who think Honorius was a great guy and just a “private” heretic :p:confused:
  7. Catholics who think one day that there are 23,000 protestant denominations and then a week later say 43,000 😛
Hello Dune fan,
This is a whole different list for what protestants don’t like about Catholics you anglicism is showing.

Protestantism is a truncated religion

Just for the record, Catholics believe if your in a Christ based religion that that is a good start, but if you do you homework, study diligently you’ll become Catholic.

Remember Christ prayed one hour for our unity.

scborromeo.org/ccc/p123a9p3.htm#843

CCC# 843 The Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. **Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as “a preparation for the Gospel **and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life.”

As far as Honorius goes read the whole letter not just the part you like to publicize, the letter wasn’t an encyclical, it was private. Honorius mistake was to not to act right away and allowed the heresy to get bigger.

Cardinal, Neuman, " to Study Church History is to cease to be Protestant"

Shakespeare was Catholic and his catholicism is reflected in his writings and his plays.

I’ve heard it said there are only several hundred denominations of Protestantism, and that we (Catholics) include the Church’s who break away from the Church’s and so on and so on… what’s the difference? You have thousands of ways of interpreting scripture, and Martin Luther was totally against that. His sola scriptura was in the light of a teaching authority, and was never about individual private interpretation.

God bless,
John

Ooops! Did I offend someone? .😦 😛
Hi Nicea,
Not picking on you, just trying to change the way you are thinking. Catholic have enough anti-bias in and out of the Church.

You have become a pharisee, the guy who stands up in front of the Church, and thanks God for not making like or less than the guy back there… but the guy back there knows God’s mercy, and remains humble.

Let’s put it this way, If you you’re having a party, you invite all the ‘Cool’ people right, not the nerds. Jesus invited the very people the religiuos upright disrespected. he sat with the guy wearing shorts sandals, with a wife beater shirt on, and educated him with divine unconditional LOVE.

Are we not to emulate him?

Jesus saw people in need of redemption, he resisted the proud, aristocrat, because those people believed they were a lock in heaven for the blessings they received here… but the opposite was true, they wasted their blessings on themselves and looked down on others.

Just today, I’ve moved from my community of five yrs. attending a different Church for about a little over a yr. attended Bible studies when they have’m, but
I’ve always felt something was missing.

Today, got a ride to Mass, the driver was late, we got there right after the Gospel,
so as the communion began, I backed out of the pew. went to stand in the back til communion finished.
The usher came to me, introduced himself as Sal, he said hello… he was genuinely concerned @ why I didn’t receive?
I introduced myself and replied, I miss the Gospel, and he said"oh its okay."

Bishop Fulton Sheen stated,“If you misst the Gospel, you probably missed the Mass” {parphrased here, because the entire mMass is the preparation to receive.}

He tried to reassure I didn’t miss the Mass, but I replied, when you hear a thing and you feel it in your gut, you have to believe it is of God.

but that is what the Catholic church is missing, people genuinely concerned for others, those who will introduce themselves and give someone a lift. Sal made a friend today, simply by reaching out.

It’s like the CITH thing, awhile ago Watching EWTN, a Philippine Priest was addressing The Pope Benedict teaching that we ought to be kneeling when we receive, I heard it, and felt it in my Gut, so @ Mas during communion, O kneel on one knee, I reach up and wait for the Priest, deacon, E.M. to place the Eucharist in my hand, receive and get up. It feels more reverent, and adds an awe within I can’t explain. But I do it because I heard it as a teaching, which moved me to kneel. I use to think I won’t kneel in front of the E.M. but I had to remind myself, it is not the person I am kneeling in front of but Christ Himself, who died and suffered for me, what’s a little kneeling in a line of people receiving by hand?

To many people are dotting the ‘i’ s and crossing their ‘t’ s, while the person next them unworthy as they are need a lift from us.

God bless,
John

Actually we’re not even supposed to hate child molesters—just what they do.

This is a funny thread, but honestly we should look at all the great stuff about Catholicism and not focus on the no-goodnicks of the brand. Hi Gurney Halleck,
read the trilogy, saw the movie. long live ‘maud dib’

remember the two thieves on the cross? Jesus didn’t hate the guy to his left evne while he was taunting him… but he showed mercy the guy on the right, confesses his sin, accepts his due condemnation and then turns to Christ, no one knows when the soul turns to God.

Luke 23:40- 43, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?
Code:
And **we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds;** but this man has done nothing wrong."

And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
Sin is sin is sin… all is condemned… no one is righteous… without God’s grace and mercy.

God bless,
John

  1. Catholics who never go to Mass
  2. Catholics who are trivial with their faith and believe that is what the church truly teaches

  5. Catholic women who wear extra tight clothes and show a lot of cleavage

  8. Catholics who receive Communion and split dodge in order to be at lunch or beat traffic
  9. Catholics who enroll their child(ren) for catechism, yet never attend Mass
  10. Catholics who never tithe because they believe it is not biblical
  11. Catholics who talk during Mass

18.Catholic parents who ask: Why does it take so long to prepare to receive Communion?
19.Catholic parents who ask: Why are you charging me for catechism?
  13. Catholic parents who believe the church should adjust to their own needs and beliefs
WHY IN THE HECK ARE YOU CATHOLIC?
5 (if done at Mass or other Church function, else just don’t hang out with these women), 7, 11 are valid concerns only because they impact others’ ability to get as much out of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as possible.
**
The rest are absolutely, completely known of your business. **

Pray and as today’s readings tell you, be humble, and try to see the planks in your own eye (your own faults) and work on them instead of being a busy-buddy always looking for fault in others. We all need to work on examining ourselves and not judging others, as Jesus said.

Wow! Amen brother! A non-Catholic who was the only one to acknowledge that I work for the Catholic Church…😦

You know rightlydivide, you are so correct. It is so different from the outside as oppose when you are on the inside. As my late uncle Richard used to say to me: The hardest material one will ever work with is people. He is SO right. I am not trying to judge people, but my list are things that can be rectified. And yes you are right, I do take my faith serious and it does frustrate me and hurt me.
Yoiur list doesn’t offend me in the least, even though I do wear sandals and shorts to Mass. 👍
