what i like about Mormons

What I was getting at was, I hear people (not on these boards, just people in my life) who talk about how annoyed they are when JWs, or LDS, knock at their door. I actually think it’s a very sweet thing for them to do.

i like it too. that way, i have someone i can invite in for a cold drink of water, and exchange or views on the faith with. i had a friend who had two female missionarys come from the LDS Church. and even though they knew she was not going to convert, they helped her landscape her yard. and they did not leave until the job was finished. it thought that was awesome! shes a little older and really appreciated them. they did not have to do this. what would happen if we had a similar program of evangelism? With exception to the Utah County Mormons, they are generally very nice, open, and accepting people. Moved around a lot (military brat), and some of my best friends have always been (and currently are) Mormons. As mentioned before, they have great youth activities (did all my boyscout stuff with Mormons), and a strong commitment to family.

Good day people. so much negativity here directed to our Mormon friends latley. including from my own. how bout we use this thread to state what we LIKE about the Mormons. haters feel free to dig deep inside to find something positive to say. I will start it off.
Mormons are 1 pro-family. 2 Mormons encourage Godly living. 3. Mormons have a strong sense of loving God, and their neighbors as themselves. 4. Mormons are pro-marriage, and stand with Catholics, that it is between a man and a woman. 5. Mormons are pro- community, and believe in having set standards in their communities, especially out in utah, where their neighborhoods are built around their Churches. this should get us started. please, keep negetive comments off this thread. we can debate doctrinal differences someplace else. We talked about the Gospels they left me their propaganda cds and book.

Through the summer they helped with different chores and by Christmas they wanted me to visit the church,tabernacle whatever they call it I said no thanks…They stopped comming around LOL

I did recve a phone call from one of the young men I advisd “remember at the begining I told you Im not interested in joining” We can however remain friends. I never heard from them again.

They are gennerally nice people though. Reminds me of stepford wives

They don’t normally stay in an area too long. They get moved around pretty quick and 2 years later, they go back home.

One good thing I love about the LDS church is the missionary program. It is a good way for a boy to become a man or a girl to become a woman - to go out on their own with nothing but a few strips of clothing, a few pennies to rub together, have to live with different companions, do their own laundry and such, and think of nothing but Jesus Christ and His ministry, gaining courage to knock on people’s doors knowing that most of them would be slammed on their faces, and still maintain Christlike charity through it all.

Then, you got those who had to learn a different language in 6 weeks then get thrown out to that country to have to speak it exclusively.

When the winter Olympics came to Salt Lake City, the #1 positive comment the tourists gave was they never had a problem with the language barrier - it was easy to find a returned missionary who can speak their language.

I went home to the Philippines after 8 years in the USA and met a missionary in my hometown. He was speaking to me in such beautiful fluent Bisaya. It was an awesome feeling to see a hazel-eyed blonde 19-year-old boy from America (which I have considered home for 8 years) speaking my own language - it’s like the best of both worlds!

An experience like a mission is something that stays with you forever. It’s life-changing for a lot of people. A lot of rich kids come home with a much deeper gratitude for life. A lot of poor kids come home with a much better hope for life. And everything else in between.

Of course, like most things, a mission is what you make of it. There is one missionary who visited me once, who went home dishonorably. He didn’t like the mission and got in trouble with a lady.

But, generally, the mission strengthens your knowlege and love of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Me too! Im a firm believer that every 19 year old young man ought to pay his way to serve people on the other side of the globe for two years. It is one of the most humiliating experiences you will ever have… and you will never feel more closer to God.

Seriously. My service as a missionary was the best two years of my life (so far, at least). I totally wish the Catholic Church had something even paltry equivalent to the LDS mission. To this very day I refuse to get into arguments with missionaries. As soon as I see them I invite them in, I feed them, I pray quickly with them and send them off to continue the good work they do. I might disagree with the particular message they carry, but the gist of it all is the same to the gospel we preach: Love for man. Fear of God. Paying the blessings we’ve been given forward.

I was not LDS till I was 23. When I went on my mission, I was 24. I was already a college grad. I quit a job, sold my car, left my fiance, and served my mission. I was almost 26 when my mission ended. I had no money, no job, and no fiance (she did not wait for me). There were times I felt like a babysitter. I was 25 hanging out with 19 year olds. They were wondering what classes to take their sophomore year and I was wondering what I would do with a college degree and two years experience as a missionary. As it turned out, I went to law school…

My mission was awesome. Honduras was poor…very poor. I lived in what we would consider horrible conditions. We had no bikes because the roads were not paved. We walked everywhere. I was very fortunate to be able to baptize over 140 people. We had baptisms almost every week of my mission. It was a very humbling experience that, no matter how I believe now, will always be the best two years of my life. I will be 50 in two weeks, and I have had some great times since…my time in the Army was incredible…I have done a lot…been a lot of places…but those two years were so incredibly special.

I have to admit the Mormons I have known are all polite and well mannered. And I do like that they are family oriented.

My grandfather’s ancestors were Utah pioneers and as wild and crazy as my family tree is, I have to say reading old writings from that branch, that there were a lot of good among them. They shared what they had and treated, or at least my ancestors did, the American Indians well.

I do not agree with the beliefs but I do like a lot of their family values.

LDS members are very much into family history. They honor their ancestors. They value education, morality and self-reliance. Even though women can’t hold the priesthood, they are encouraged to be all they can be. The women have weekly and monthly meetings to help them to become better women. There is a lot to like about the LDS religion.

Sure there is controversy over why they are into history but you have to admit, they are the best darn genealogists in the world.

I like a lot of things about Catholicism and Catholics. Mormons are not like Protestants who hate Catholicism, if not Catholics. I like the history, the culture, the tradition; I even like the Catechism—although I haven’t read it through yet. But I have a copy of it at home! I bought it with the intention of reading through it someday, but haven’t got round to doing so yet. This is the copy I bought (hard cover edition). Is that a good one? I pretty much agree with most of what is in there, that I am already familiar with. I don’t think there is much in the Catholic Catechism that a Mormon would disagree with.

Truthfully, I would much rather have a Mormon for a friend than some Catholics and Protestants. I enjoy the dialoguing, even though it sometimes ends up as an arguement. I want to know the intimate secrets about the LDS. I, in turn, will tell the workings of Catholicism to the best of my knowledge.

I know that I have acted brashly and without feeling on some of these threads. I deeply, sincerely and ashamedly apologize to all that I have done so. I truly am trying to control myself.

I enjoy and love talking to Diana, Parker, and Zerinus. I know all is well if they all forgive me for my actions. I put my tail between my legs and hold my ears down and look at them with a sad face with my hat in my hands.

Good idea given the recent moratorium on Mormon threads. Usually when the mods jump in like that it indicates that the environment has gotten too hot and it’s probably a good idea for us all to take a step back, breathe, and cool down.

I like several things about Mormons. As a whole they seem to be an honest and industrious people who made the desert in Utah bloom. They are excellent family people - well, most of them (always exceptions, of course). They are devoted to their faith, young men giving two years to mission work. Many of their values are firm and good.

 However, I must add that while I can respect Mormons I do have serious difficulties with their faith. The *Book of Mormon*and other Mormon scriptures are suspect and worse. The polygamy of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young are blights on Mormon history. Women still are treated in a subordinate fashion. Up until the 1970s Mormon theology taught that Blacks were inferior, condemned by God for past sins. I don't believe they changed this teaching, except that suddenly the curse of God was lifted - timed conveniently, by the way. Mormons baptize the dead, including many of my Catholic, Congregationalisrt, Baptist and Methodist ancestors, which I find arrogant and offensive. And we could go on.

 In response to a poster above, **zerinus**, Protestants I know do not hate Catholicism. That is a libel and slander. A few Protestants may, just like some Catholics here in CAF certainly appear to hate Protestantism. Most Protestants I know may disagree with Catholicism but work hand in glove with Catholics on local soup kitchens and other worthy projects. Mainline churches often unite with Catholic churches during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Or, on Good Friday, even. Etc. Why is there this insistence on CAF that Protestants hate Catholicism? It seems like a form of projection to me. Is the reverse closer to the truth?

  Let's not forget. however, that according to Joseph Smith, God the Father accompanied by God the Son came to him as a teenager. When he asked which of the Christian denominations was the right one, God replied that they were all abominations! Now, can this pass as tolerance or what? (I hope I have rendered this Smith episode correctly. It's been a long time since I read Mormon writings.)

  Having said all this, God bless people of every creed, color and country, and may religion become a bridge and not a barrier.
