I don’t know about **Deo Gratias42’s **parish, but in mine the Tabernacle is in the center of the sanctuary, about 10 feet behind the altar.
Because we’re short of EMHCs this summer, only one is scheduled for Sunday Mass and that one helps Fr. distribute the Hosts. That means the only ones who receive from the Chalice are the EMHCs, altar servers (if there are any) and the priest. That kind of forces him to purify the Chalice himself, something he refuses to do if there are EMCHs ministering the Precious Blood.
Interestingly enough, in one diocese in Canada the Bishop has ordered the EMHCs to purify the vessels, in defiance of the GIRM. His reason: “He/she who can do the greater can do the lesser.” He has also ordered that the Lectionary be carried in procession because Canada has no Book of Gospels.
