What I saw today at Mass

Wow, it sounds like your priest needs prayers. How can he omit a homily because he didn’t have time to look over the readings? That should be a very basic duty every week for a priest.
That’s what I’m thinking. I’d stay up late the night before and at least write a 5 minute commentary. Any priest whose been to seminary should be able to comment a few minutes on at least one of the readings. I mean, come on. You KNOW this stuff already right? It sounds like someone has a casual attitude about their vocation.

Thats the norm for a daily mass (the omitting of some stuff) but thats not good on a Sunday Mass. Thats practically liturgical abuse. However, dont get mad at the mass because of some women wearing immodest clothing and laughing. There will always be people like that in the Church. Thats why I like the idea of the Vatican dress-code being used in Churches all over the world.

Unless this priest is a complete newbie, he should have had the skill to be able to wing a short one.

I am so sorry. I will pray. I am not surprised though. I have seen simular abuses at various Catholic Churches. I am floored everytime this happens. I am dumb because I thought we are ONE ROMAN CATHOLIC Church and we all had to follow the same thing. I get so mad. RULES ARE RULES. End of story…

  • No altar servers
  • Penitential Rite omitted and straight to the Kyrie (no, there was no reason for it)
  • Gloria omitted and straight to the Collect
  • Homily omitted because he’d been “too busy to look at the readings” (but we did get a story about how he’d escaped getting a speeding ticket but had been given one for passing in a no passing zone, “Poor me, I have to spend $120”)
  • Creed omitted and straight to the Intercessions
  • Woman in shorts preparing the altar at the Offertory
  • Laughs with the woman during the Prayers over the Offerings
  • Genuflections omitted during the Consecration and before Communion
I’m so fed up with this kind of stuff.😦
Do you think the bishop would take action as is his duty?CIC Canon 838.2. It is for the Apostolic See to order the sacred liturgy of the entire Church, to publish the liturgical books, to review their translations into the vernacular languages and to see that liturgical ordinances are faithfully observed everywhere.

CIC Canon 846.1. The liturgical books approved by the competent authority are to be faithfully observed in the celebration of the sacraments; therefore, no one on personal authority may add, remove, or change anything in them.

ps. In our particular diocese, the bishop seems to turn a blind eye to the Churches that do this neglect, due to the fact that 3 of them are the “CASH COWS” in our diocese. HMMM You brought this thought to my mind. I pray you new priest ROCKS!!!

Some posts have mentioned that the priest “skips the penetential rite” and moves straight on to the “Lord have mercy”. I think if what is described is option 2 or 3 below it is in fact allowed.

The priest says
“Brethren (brothers and sisters),
let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.”

Then there are a number options as to what happens next…

1: I confess to almighty God …

OR

2:
*Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
Congregation: For we have sinned against you.

Priest : Show us, O Lord, your mercy.
Congregation: And grant us your salvation.*

OR
3: An invocation followed by "Lord have mercy … Christ have mercy etc
for example;
P: Lord Jesus, you came to gather the nations into the peace of God’s kingdom: Lord, have mercy.
C: Lord have mercy
P: You come in word and sacrament to strengthen us in holiness: Christ, have mercy.
C: Lord have mercy
P: You will come in glory with salvation for your people: Lord, have mercy.
C: Lord have mercy

The various versions of 3 which have been in the old missal are still retained, but a little harder to find in the New Missal.

I don’t know about anyone else but when I say he goes directly to the Kyrie, I mean he goes directly from the above, which he paraphrases, to Lord, have Mercy. He doesn’t use options B or C.

Oh, I could have added that one to the list, the EMHCs always retrieve the Ciborium at the Fraction Rite and repose the Blessed Sacrament after Communion.
Yeah, I thought this was standard practice. Maybe it’s a Canada thing. I have never seen a priest walk to the Tabernacle to get the ciborium.
This is generally standard practice when the Tabernacle is not in main Sanctuary. My Church is like this where the Tabernacle is in a chapel behind the Sanctuary and out of view. One of the EMHCs or a Sacristan will retrieve the Ciborium and return it later as the Priest or Deacon is purifying the chalices.

Since the celebrant is not generally supposed to leave during the Mass, there’s no other choice other than to have someone get it.

 Thats just wrong. I cannot understand that. It only takes a few seconds to do it properly.

Perhaps the priest just had a bad day. If it is just the first time then let it slide if it happens contact him immediately. That is no way to act in the very presence of God.

To clarify my “Thats just wrong” comment was agreeing with phemie not picking a fight with agw123, whose point I understand.

I don’t know about **Deo Gratias42’s **parish, but in mine the Tabernacle is in the center of the sanctuary, about 10 feet behind the altar.

Because we’re short of EMHCs this summer, only one is scheduled for Sunday Mass and that one helps Fr. distribute the Hosts. That means the only ones who receive from the Chalice are the EMHCs, altar servers (if there are any) and the priest. That kind of forces him to purify the Chalice himself, something he refuses to do if there are EMCHs ministering the Precious Blood.

Interestingly enough, in one diocese in Canada the Bishop has ordered the EMHCs to purify the vessels, in defiance of the GIRM. His reason: “He/she who can do the greater can do the lesser.” He has also ordered that the Lectionary be carried in procession because Canada has no Book of Gospels.

My Church growing up (different diocese) had the Tabernacle in the Sancuary, but that was an urban city old style Church.

My Church now is in the suburbs and while being just as Holy, is from an architectural design of the 1980s after the previous Church burned down. So its a “Church in the Round” semi-circle and the Tabernacle is in a Chapel behind the Sanctuary.

Ours too…I find the ‘round’ architectural model very distracting, and I am very easily distracted no matter what kind of church I’m in. It also makes it awkward to genuflect to the tabernacle when entering/leaving your seat. I understand that the idea is supposedly to get everyone closer to the altar, but I really prefer more traditionally designed churches that have a straight sight line to the altar, tabernacle and crucifix so we don’t have to stare at each other during Mass. Other than that though our parish is great, so I try not to worry too much about the design. We’re lucky to have such a large parish, a great priest and the church is always full.

Wow. I am shocked to read this and I so understand why you are fed up with this kind of stuff. Have you tried to report the situation to Church authorities? 😦
