What if a Catholic sincerely believes that the Catholic Church is wrong about Masturbation?

From one of the early responses (first page):

“But I tell you that anyone who [l]ooks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

The poster then went on the claim that masturbation involves lust and so, “game over”.

My response is as follows: Do you lust after your wife? So you’ve committed adultery in your heart? Jesus said, a woman, and did not say, a woman that you are not married to. The point of the passage, dear poster, is to get some to understand that thought matters as much as deed. To take the obvious example, recent surveys on college campuses across the US found that more than half of college-aged men would rape a woman if they knew that they could away with it. So what the credit to them for not raping anyone, given that it appears that the only reason they are not raping anyone now is that they don’t want to go to jail? That’s the point of Jesus’ words, i.e., you can’t say that you never committed adultery if you spent your whole life lusting after married women and the only reason you didn’t commit the adultery is because you didn’t want to be stoned.

Masturbation is not mentioned a single time in the entire Bible. We have much else that is sexual in nature mentioned, even sex with beasts, and by the way, what percent of the population fornicates with animals? Less than 1%? How many masturbate? So, an activity involving less than 1% of the human population gets mentioned but one that involves more than half gets no word. What does that say.

And see the Torah re the emission of semen. Not gravely immoral. When emitted in intercourse and when not, same remedy, go take a bath. Maybe the RCC could wrap it’s mind around that concept: unclean when engaging in an act designed to give new life, ie., you are unclean when you emit semen while trying to make a baby. The reason why it is “unclean” is simple. The very fact that we need to procreate to keep our species alive is an everyday reminder of the decay and death that is us and our universe, and such decay and death is the antithesis of The Eternal and so it is unclean.

Lastly, there was this other comment:

“Who is more likely to be correct, me or the long list of saints in various cultures and various times who believed and taught what the Church teaches?”

First off, that’s a logical fallacy, and the fallacy is more than amply demonstrated by all those humans of long ago being wrong in thinking that the earth is flat. Secondly, the long list of saints includes more patent anti-Semites than I care to count [you shall not hate your brother in your heart; they did and so gave voice to their hate]. And back to my initial point here, most saints before the last century believed the earth to be flat [my favorite papal bull, Inter Caetera, divides the world between Spain and Portugal, giving to Spain all territory to the one side of the line, and all territory on the other side of the line to the Portugal; problem is the world is round so the Portuguese and Spanish will just fight again when they meet up on the other side of the world after sailing around the world]. And so, you’re right, let’s put our trust in humans who divided a round world along an up and down line that didn’t make a circle.

Sorry, almost forgot, but concerning another grab for power, the power to bind and loose is for the individual and not the church. You see, friends, if you were sinned against, and you loose the sin against you, how can God not also do the same? Does God want to be known as less merciful than you? Now if you bind the sin… Come judgment day, we will well and truly know who are the merciful among us.

I dont think wet dreams or masturbation are sinful, too many people do it & some Catholics spend a lifetime & never beat these so called sin. I think its God given & natural

hello, do you mean it’s wrong to do it on your own;but ok if your wife/girlfriend does it for you?.regards

I would like to make a comment on tha above subject.

No doubt , the Church deems the sin of Masturbation as a Sin. The question is to what degree is one culpable of the sin : that is , is it a Mortal or a venial sin ??

It is noted that one of the paragraph states that the following affefcts the degree of one’s sinfullness and which may lessen or even reduce to a minimum one’s culpability :
  1. affective immaturity- are teenager not in that category- immature
  2. the force of acquired habit- teenagers and including adults most certainly are in this category
  3. condition of anxiety or other psychological or social factors.
Although , it is a sin yet if anny of the above factors are invilved then a simple contrition and firm amendment not to do the act again should, to my judgement sufficient and perhaps mention this solitary sin in your next coonfession. Of course, we must all be in
" bona fide" or in good faith when we examine our conscience. the above is not our license to sin , be it venial or mortal.
my question at this point ,if it can be answered by any priest or moral theologian- is what does the Church mean by ANXIETY or PSYCHOLOGICAL or SOCIAL factors. Again, I have some ideas what these constitutes but would like an honest opinion of a priest or moral theologian.
I think i speak with an orthodox or correct interpretation of what the whole paragraph on the subject as written by the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

.

haven’t read all posts…

but what if a person didn’t believe that jumping out of a 10 story building would cause him any harm??

I agree with you, Distracted.

Folks we should be careful about spending time on this thread since the original poster, JAW642, has not posted in a while.
From tjm190. the heart of the “masturbation is a mortal sin argument” is that we should accept church teaching without question.
Are you really serious? Have you done more to learn the Church’s understanding of God’s loving plan for human sexuality than read this thread and a few paragraphs in the catechism?

I don’t mean to be nasty but there is so much good information out there that presents the Church’s view in a more comprehensive and much less legalistic way. God’s loving plan for us is awesome! I can’t explain it in a post! It is so different from what we get from our society and a different world from what is presented in porn!

The following are good sources for that positive vision of human sexuality.

  1. In fact I have, 12 years of Catholic school in fact and all the reading and lecturing that entails.
  2. Mild nastiness is to be expected on the internet, no worries.
  3. I’ll be sure to go through materials you ever so graciously provided very soon.

“Two types of men multipy sins and a third attracts the Lord’s anger: A blazing passion which burns like fire will not be extinguished until it burns itself up. A man who seeks pleasure from his own body, he will not give up until he catches fire; to the indecent man, all food taste sweet and he will not be satisfied until death.” {Sirach 23:16-17}

Hope this helps God bless!!!👍:tiphat:

My goodness what a foolish question. Masturbation is pefectly normal. do it when you feel the need , and it is no one business. God made man sexual.and if you can not have a partner ,for this wonderful pleasure .then intertain yourself . This act is heathly.stop worrying. enjoy

No, it’s not healthy, it is disordered, self serving and oh, by the way, A SIN.

Yeah, most of us are guilty of it at one time or another, but I wouldn’t want to be responsible for encouraging someone else to sin, then discouraging them from seeking repentence by saying “it’s normal, don’t worry about it.” It may be a normal desire…but then again, so (for me) is the desire to fantasize extensively about Denzel Washington…doesn’t make it any less a sin.

I Kind of agree with you, people spend their entire life trying to rid themselves of this habit, but they never succeed, & its not because they dont love or honor God, it`s an in your face thing, all the time that I think most must pay attention to. I am not so sure God cares if we do it. like U say, how many people are not fortunate for one reason or another in finding a partner to marry, they have sexual needs too

Look - lots of people spend their entire lives trying to kick an addiction to alcohol and never succeed at that either. And there are certainly an awful lot of beer ads around that make THAT an ‘in-your-face’ thing too. I suppose you’ll tell me getting drunk isn’t a sin?

What about food? Food ads everywhere, obesity at epidemic levels - people constantly trying and failing to curb their overeating. Are you really telling me gluttony is no longer a sin as a result?

Tell me, where in the Bible does God say,as you seem to think He has, ‘Thou shalt not … except if thou be really REALLY tempted, then it’s all bets off!’ Your idea makes a mockery of His commandments.

I am one of those who has ‘not been fortunate’ enough to find a marital partner. Let me tell you, for far too long I too bought into your nonsensical idea that I ‘have sexual needs’ that somehow make masturbation something I must do.

For the past several years, thank God, I’ve realised that that notion is utter rubbish. I have led a happier life as a result. God’s plan is for you and I to be the masters, not the slaves, of our bodies in that respect as in every other - and I’m living proof that with His help it’s more than possible, it’s the right way to live.

One size dont fit all, maybe You dont have a sexual need, but a lot of others do, especially if they are not up there in the high spirituality group. Maybe You have more Grace than others

Nope. The only reason I was where I was is, the only reason anyone is where they are vis a vis sexual sin, is that they buy into the lie that it is ‘a need’. And buy into the lie that nothing else can fill that need.

God doesn’t create people with a ‘need’ to blaspheme, to murder, to steal, to commit adultery - why would He create people with a ‘need’ to sin in this or any other way? There’s no such thing.

And there’s no reason on earth why anyone can’t be where I am. Grace is there to be had for the asking. I’m not saying I turned into a saint overnight, but so it is with conquering any sin.

Of course some would rather not ask, or at least rather not receive it. As St Augustine puts it about his thinking in his sinful days - ‘Lord, grant me chastity - just not yet!’

No, one size doesn’t fit all. But it doesn’t mean we are allowed to pick and chose what sins we want to believe in. The second we start doing that, we’ve made our own god to be what we want.

But we are sexual beings, we have sexual appetites, which a lot find hard to control, even among the consecrated religious, it`s a powerful desire & many cannot control it , you see St Agustine wanted to do it as long as he could, & thats the way most of us are, we are not all on the same page regarding our spiritual growth, without grace it is impossible to contain oneself & even then we fall. I believe what My confessor tells me, God knows man is weak, & that he is not out to get us. We need to become awefully holy before we can control our human nature & most arent there , or want to be there, they straddle the fence

I find my appetite for food hard to control as well - and like I said there are food shops and food ads everywhere. So what is the solution? From experience I can tell you. It’s absolutely NOT to pretend that my gluttony is no sin, because it is - and a deadly one at that. It is NOT to excuse it with an ‘oh poor weak little me’ song and dance - that just gives me licence to keep on going. Rather it is to acknowledge the sin, see it in all its ugliness, and be aware that God’s grace is far greater.

St Augustine wasn’t describing his early attitude in order to excuse it in any way - it was to condemn it and laugh at his foolishness in thinking that way.

“Without grace it is impossible to contain oneself” - so you think God hasn’t given you the grace? That He wants you to fall? Of course not. His grace is more than sufficient. You just haven’t asked for it or don’t take advantage of it. It doesn’t take great holiness to do so - that’s another lie of the devil. I certainly am not greatly holy.

It just a belief that it is actually important to conquer our sins.

Unfortunately I am a fence straddler,I want it both ways, But God knows my heart, I am like a lot of pick & choose Catholics, there are more of us than devout Catholics, not to say That I don`t admire Devout Catholics, cause I do

Yes God knows your heart - as do you. What do you expect to achieve with your fence sitting? Are you happy being neither hot nor cold, neither one thing nor the other? Getting off the fence is the easiest thing in the world.

You Know, I am not sure, cause God is a Mystery, but I may be closer to God than a lot of folks, I pray often & ask for lots & lots of mercy for us all
