Just a point: if you don’t know you’re lying, you’re not lying.EXACTLY. And to be honest I think that most people are like this as well…or they are legitimately sociopaths. Anyone that says they would completely change their outlook on life if they didn’t believe in God and treat others horribly is either lying or a sociopath…and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and just think they are lying.
To be honest, many of these people don’t even know they are lying, but as someone that went from a believer in God to a non believer I can tell you that my morals have not changed in the least. IMO the golden rule is still the best moral system and should be followed by everyone. If you legitimately only do nice things because you think some supreme being is watching you and that belief is the difference between you being a nice and noble person and you being a horrible person, you are a complete sociopath and I hope that you never lose your faith.
That you can say your morals haven’t changed tells us nothing, especially in light of your earlier post that you weren’t ever aligned with Church teachings anyway. You are probably a person who tries to do what is right in the world, but if you are truly following God, there is a whole new level you can take things to. If you grow in a relationship with Him. And your understanding that Christians do things because God is watching isn’t necessarily accurate. It may be for some people, certainly not for all (and hopefully not for most) of us.
I’m not sure why you feel a need to convince us that we don’t need God to be good people. Christians know that the law of God is written in the hearts of all, even non-Christians. I suspect most of us know “good people” who are atheists. You ask how we’d change, and then say we lie but don’t know we’re lying. Why is it so important for you to convince us we wouldn’t change?
