What if, god talked to me, and i went to a priest but he said that it couldn’t be the voice of god. How come in the past people had god talked to them and show them things and they were believed but if god says something that is not inline with the catholic faith that person is crazy? Why does everyone believe insert visionary saint here but not me?

Please accept all that I say with an open heart, and realize that what I say to you is done in charity. I mean no harm and I do not intend to hurt your feelings.

Please be advised that even though you may be convinced that God spoke to you in some direct fashion, you could easily be mistaken.

Please know that God does not contradict himself. God will not teach something by way of scripture or His Church that is not true.

Likewise, God will not later contradict the truth which He has revealed through scripture and His Church.

If what you believe to have been revealed by God to you is contrary to the truth revealed by scripture and the Church then it is not of God. In this case you are making a mistake thinking that it comes from God.

I had a long discussion with someone that insisted that He was being directly taught by Jesus and that He could actually hear Jesus speak to him. Moreover, he even told me that Jesus did teach him some things that were contrary to scripture. He admitted this when the scriptures were presented to him, but he insisted that what Jesus had taught him was correct and that what was in scripture either didn’t matter or some how didn’t apply. This particular person has a serious problem and he could not be convinced that he was wrong even though the evidence was completely overwhelming.

I do not know you and I have no clue as to what you claim God has told you. I can only say that all of the great saints that received visions and messages from God had one thing in common. None of them presented anything that was contrary to scripture or the teachings of the Church. These two authoritative sources cannot be superceded by what anyone believes to be a private revelation from God. We are easily deceived. Scripture and the Church are of God and they protect us.

I hope this helps.

Just a thought, but the saints that report private revelations tend to be extraordinarily humble about the experience and not necessarily in a hurry to be believed by the masses. How do you know it was God and not the devil or simply your own interior voice? I don’t doubt the experience seems authentic to you. This is not intended to poke fun at you. What is the good that comes from this revelation and how does it point to the Gospel?

Any person who believes they are receiving messages from God should submit this to their priest and a trained spiritual advisor.

They are trained to help people discern whether or not these types of experiences are true and whether they are from God.

Once submitted to the authority of the Church, one must abide by their decision on the matter.

This is not accurate. First, there have been many who made such claims in times past who were found to not have authentic visions. It is wrong to believe everyone was believed in times past.

And, there are many in times present who are found to have authentic visions.
but if god says something that is not inline with the catholic faith that person is crazy?
If someone receives a “message” that contradicts the Catholic faith then that message most certainly is NOT authentic. The Catholic Faith is from God and is protected from error by God. The Church cannot err.
Why does everyone believe insert visionary saint here but not me?
I cannot say. But, if you truly think you are receiving messages, you need to go to a trained spiritual director. And, if those messages contradict Catholic teaching they are NOT from God. You need to go back to your priest and you also need to pray for acceptance to obey what your priest tells you.

Also, you may not discuss any private revelations here on this forum, so please do not share any details beyond what you’ve already shared.

Consider:

People tend to be envious. Best ignore them.

People are skeptical to the absurd. I really believe that if Jesus came back most Catholics would call Him a demon. The Pope most decidedly wouldn’t know what to do. But, don’t blame them, remember Thomas, the apostle.

Listening to God, and Him talking to you, is not supposed to be uncommon. It is called prayer by many people. It is good that you are doing it, best to keep it up.

But consider also what God says. If He told me to marry someone, would I? Would you?

Sounds like God has blessed you.

It is fine to be supportive of someone, but your remarks about Catholics and the Pope are simply uninformed and uncharitable. You obviously have a very low opinion of your fellow Catholics…should I assume that this is out of envy? Thankfully, I am not about to do that.

It was a what if, if i heard voices in my head, even if the voice said it was god. I would be very skeptical. And would most likely see a psychatrist

I tend to haluscinate on occasion, i don’t do drugs so i know i’m just crazy, but stragely as it only happened in the past few years it’s not a big deal as i can tell whats real and whats not most of the time.

This was just crossing my mind one night as i was laying in my bed seeing something that wasn’t there in my room. And i got to thinking that along time ago people thought these were visions from god or something all together.

I’ve been reading along these but what if the fault is human error in the past? People seem to be using the church as a reference but shouldn’t the reference in fact be god? And what if in the past the people discering what was visionary and what was insanity got it wrong what then? Surely even if god sent msg’s that what they were preaching was wrong they still wouldn’t have listened because hey had gotten the initial reference wrong.

This is where my mind went to thinking. What if the initial references we all rely on were wrong, what if they were all simply insane or hallucinating.

I have to say i completely agree. I remember reading about a female i think shes a saint now, but she wrote about how god guided her through hell one day. Now this person today would most likely be admitted into a psychiatric ward.

I think Jesus coming back today would be most interesting, to see how he would handle this day and age. To prove to be the son of god, in and amongst all the religious violence of today, to say that all other religions but one are false. Could get very very ugly. On top of the fact that America would want to harness whatever powers Jesus had. It would be very interesting indeed. But thats another post all together…

Hi Pax

You have no appreciation of history. Consider the Jews and Jesus. Jesus was their Messiah, foreigners, the 3 wise men figured out who He was, the Jews didn’t. Jesus was condemned by the high priest of the Jews, wasn’t he?

I find it to be hypocritical that Mormons buy J Smith and his tablets by don’t even know about other modern day “divine” interventions. I think that when Jesus, or Mary, appear to someone the initial reaction of the Church is non-belief. That is true now and has been. As I said, Thomas rejected the idea that Jesus rose.

So, if Jesus shows up He can stay at my house and He doesn’t even have to fix my arm. My arm doesn’t work. But that is off subject.

Bye the way, does the well documented, and accepted by the Church, appearances by Jesus since 200AD give Revelation a bad time? I mean isn’t Revelation supposed to be about the second coming? If Jesus shows up for a long weekend can he do that without all the other stuff in Revelation? I think He can, He is God, He can do whatever He wants.

As far as my fellow Catholics, well if God loves them who am I to complain, or not love them. But I stand by what I said. Today the Church has the charismatic movement. Tongues, healings and other outpourings of the spirit are common. I bet the vast majority of Catholics think charismatics are crazy.I’ll bet the vast majority of people on this site are uncomfortable with the charismatics.

God is alive and He lives in your hearts and souls. God does not sleep. He Blesses those He loves, sometimes in ways that are unique, or unusual.

So Pax, how would you feel if you thought Jesus talked to you or came to see you and lets say, left roses, but nobody believed you? Believe me, nobody would. I am not picking on you, all I am saying is that you would be no different than all the other people that Jesus, or Mary have appeared to.

There is alot I once had that I’d like to have now. Do I envy people that can use two arms? I don’t think I do. After my wife died did I envy all the couples at Church on Sunday? Yes I did. But Catholics I know, and I know many, have nothing I envy. We are all children of God. What is it that you have, my brother, that our Father has not given to me? Who does He love more?

You assume a great deal in reading the hearts and minds of your brothers and sisters in Christ.

I have an appreciation of history. Likewise, I am aware that the Jews did not know Jesus as God. Catholics do know Jesus as God. Thus it would seem to me that if Jesus truly came to me or another Catholic in a vision that we would know that it was Him. If the Lord gifted me or someone else with such a vision I believe that He would give us the grace to recognize Him.

I am not cynical about any of this…God is generous to His children.

If the Lord gifted me with a vision I would be frightened and in awe. I would be grateful to the fullest of my being. If no one believed me then so be it. I cannot make others do anything or believe anything that I might say.

St Teresa of Avila in her book “The Interior Castle” or “Inner Mansions” said there is three ways in which people have “visions” (also includes “hearing” things from God). She also said that there is three sources that can create “visions”; God, ourselves, and the Evil spirits.

These are the three types of vision as told by St Teresa: (paraphrased)
**1) When the person receives an actual physical sight or sound with their senses. **God can and has used this with many saints, (as with Joan of Arc) but it is also common for our own senses to decieve us. This type of vision is very easy for the Evil one to conjure up.

**2) When the person recieves the vision or sound in their imagination, when they can see or hear it in their mind. **Again God can and does at times use this type of “vision”, but very often we can create our own visions in our imagination. the evil one is also very good at decieving our minds.

3) When the person “sees” or “hears” God speaking interiorly, in their hearts. usually their is no visual sight or audible sound, but the visionary has a quiet knowing of God and his holy will. Again we can decieve ourselves very easily, but this type of vision is more difficult for the Devil to mimick because of the deep sense of peace that surrounds it.

But in any case, we should submit ourselves completely to the authority of the church. Even St. Faustina was doubted when her “visions” began. She is now one of the most known saints of our time.

Just a thought…what about our subconscious minds? I don’t know what the OP was allegedly told by God, but could it have been something in their subconscious minds? I believe that God works with our subconscious, not in an obvious way, but He does work that way.

Sometimes our hopes and fears are buried in our minds behind fear, or everything else that we feel is more important or more reasonable. Just because we bury these things that doesn’t mean they are gone - they pop up every once in awhile…I would think if they were things that God wanted us to do He would prompt those awakenings along.

There was a time that I felt like God had spoken to me. I even turned my head to see who was standing behind me, that’s how real the voice was. The words didn’t really make sense in the context of how my mind worked, but it made me think of things completely differently. Out of fear I never told anyone. After all who wants to be chastized over something that you yourself realizes seems crazy. Now that its been 6 years I am thinking about making an appointment with my old counselor to get an educated opinion. But I’m still afraid that I will be prescribed some high dose drugs 😃

Am I to understand that if Jesus speaks to me I should take a bible (printed and given to me by man) and use it to argue with him? This is what I cannot get past. The power of the Catholic church to define the word of Jesus is even stronger than words directly from Jesus. In your example you are indicating your friend has a serious problem, yet you are basing that on what other mortal men have told you.

That’s be definition isn’t it? If you contradict the teachings of the church then the church won’t call you a saint.

Scripture is the inspired word of God. In Malachi 3:6 God tells us, “For I the Lord do not change;”

God does not set out a truth for man only to change it later into an untruth. God does not change and neither does the truth of God.

I am not suggesting that anyone argue with Jesus. The Church is the mystical body of Christ[Eph 5:23]. There can be no contradiction in Christ and his body the Church. Neither is there contradiction in the inspired word of God and the words of Jesus. Likewise, no vision, if truly from Jesus, can contradict the actual words of Jesus in scripture. Any such contradictions would nullify the words of scripture as the inspired word of God.

The individual I spoke of actually contradicted the words of Jesus as spoken in scripture. Do you really think that this individual has any credibility in terms of having a genuine visitation and discussion with Jesus? Do you really think that I am basing my view on what other mortal men have told me? I am actually basing my view upon the inspired word of God in scripture against some pretty wild claims from someone[another mortal man] that believed that Jesus was telling him these rather outlandish claims.

Absolutely…how could the body of Christ on earth affirm error even tacitly by canonizing a heretic?

My point was that finding a commonality when it is put there by definition doesn’t mean you have found a pattern as you implied.

The pattern is there and the promises of Christ are there as well. There is no organization in history that compares with the Catholic Church. It has existed since the time of Jesus and that fact alone is a miracle in our midst.
