What if "Your" mass time was switched from OF to EF. What would you do?

I’m curious about something and honestly don’t know the answer.

My parish has a 9am Mass where we do the dismissal of the catechumens in RCIA. At the 10:30am Mass there is a dismissal of the children for the children’s Liturgy of the Word.

Neither of these things were a part of the Mass back in the 1960s and earlier. Could they be made part of the Mass if the EF were being celebrated at one of these times? Or are they totally incompatible?
My guess is yes it can be done.
You maight want to ask this on the Traditional board or even the Ask an Apologist Board

Hello - I just wanted to push this to the top once to be sure as many people who might wish to contribute get a chance.

I also wish to thank everyone who voted and who posted here. It is most gratifying and re-enforces my faith in my Brother Catholics. That, whatever the Holy Father and the Bishops decide in regards to the Liturgies, the vast majority will accept with Christian Love and obedience.

Peace
James

I love the EF, and if my parish were to offer it on Sunday, it would become my regular mass.

Well, there’s only one English Mass time per week in my parish, so that’s the one I go to. (Of course, it’s at 9am on Sunday mornings, and I have to leave the house at 7:30 to get there. Why don’t they have English afternoon masses?) I’m new to Catholicism and I’ve never been to an EF mass, but it would probably require as much effort to follow as the regular mass does for me. I’m familiar with the Latin words because I sang in a choir that did a lot of Latin religious music.

If I knew of a parish that offered EF at a more convenient time, I might switch to it and attend with my boyfriend. I’d like to go to Mass with him, but there’s no parish in the area that offers Mass at a time we can both attend in a language we can both understand. At least if it were in Latin, we’d be on equal footing!

I would continue attending the EF Mass, given that I am particularly attached to it, and it rocks. ^^

Of course, the change from OF to EF isn’t too bad, considering the parish I am at now is amazing, and celebrates the OF reverently!

I would attend the EF Mass and encourage the Latinos to attend…then we could all worship in the SAME LANGUAGE…

That is kind of how I learned the responses for the Latin NO Mass.

The parish my father grew up in was a mix of Irish, German and Hispanic. Not really a problem when the Mass was in Latin.

When the OF Mass was first promulgated, the pastor at this parish simply said it Latin.

Since we often picked up my Grandmother to bring her to Mass, we often went to this parish and so heard the Latin responses.

It still remains a much more elegant solution than all the Balkanizations that happen in some parishes.

I don’t know how close you are, but the Cathedral in Seoul has a Sunday Latin OF Mass . That was the one I attended when I was in Korea.

I don’t understand why some would choose not to go to anyMass at all instead of just going to a different time that the OF was held. Afterall, “way back in the late '60s” those who truly loved the TLM (EF) were simply expected to go to the NO (OF) instead. There was nothing to choose from and not even a half-hearted attempt to understand our wishes. We were simply “bulldozed”. Yet forty years later, here we are. Why should it be any different for lovers of the NO especially when it would be available at other times?
Is that** really **what this is all about…REVENGE? We HAD to do this When the NO was enforced, NOW YOU HAVE to do this when the TLM is enforced. What is this???Why is this???

As far as I am concerned, I will just go to mass…not to criticize it or find fault in others or the priest, BUT to worship. You DON’T NEED anything but the Eucharist to FEEL reverent. That is a state of mind. If you go to mass with a feeling of “ha ha, I’m going to the TLM (or NO)”, then, I am sorry and I’ll pray for you.

Just go with the feeling of “being in our Lord’s presence and worship”. That is all that really matters.

Does anyone actually feel that if the Priest doesn’t hold his fingers the right way, or leave out a prayer here or there, or stand or kneel, or etc… that will cause US not to go to heaven? I really don’t think MY Lord will judge us that way? Please , SOMEONE, answer this question for me?

All this really makes me think of the “Widow’s mite” in the Bible.
The rich gave a great deal to the church and bragged about it, but the widow, who only had very little" gave all that she had. God looked more lovingly on her. If she thought, "Well, I don’t have enough, so I’ll just complain about not having enough and not give…(Well, If I don’t hear Latin or kneel, then I just complain too and cause confusion for the whole church) HUMMMMM
Is that what being a Christian is all about?

What language were the readings and homily?
The readings varied, but there was mineograph with the readings in English and Spanish.

The homily would be primarily in English, but cover the ‘highlights’ in Spanish.

Of course I cannot speak for every poster here, but for me it is not about revenge at all. The Holy Father has made known that the “TLM” is loved by our Lord. The Holy Father has also made it known that he would like to see this form utilized more.
Whenever this is brought up in conversation here it seems that someone will make comments along the lines of “no one wants it”, or “no one will atend it”, that sort of thing. Thus the Poll.

This has always been my opinion too. Of course different people find different things to be helpful. Including the EF more broadly will only enhance this.

There are those people who are overly scrupulous and worried that an invalid form might inadvertently effect them. Of course this is not the case. If a priest, either willfully or not, fails to properly perform the duties of the mass, the sin (if there is one) is on him and not on those in the pew.
However, if there be someone “in the pews” who is knowledgable and sees a blatent error, it is their duty to bring it to the attention of the priest, and if necessary higher up, so as to prevent further abuse of the mass.

I hope you don’t feel that this is what I am doing. Just complaining -
I have always tried to preach a consiliatory message re the OF and EF.
These two forms of Valid Rites should compliment each other instead of causing such contention.

If this poll has shown anything it seems that it shows there is little for anyone to be afraid of. Consistantly 80+% either would make a point of attending or, like yourself, don’t care so long as it is a valid mass.

To those who worry that an EF mass would be empty, a quick look at the numbers shows the opposite. Less than 20% would actively avoid the EF, while around 40% would make a point of attending. If anything, it appears that the EF would be more crowded, not less.

It’s not about revenge. It’s just stating fact. We (who grew up with the Tridentine Mass and loved it) did not stop going to Church because of a change in Masses. We remained loyal to the successor of Peter and would never dream of leaving (even though some of us were broken-hearted)–how could we? Jesus choose Peter. My gosh, to completely stop going to Church because a certain usual Mass time was changed! What were they thinking?

It’s important to understand the limitations of a poll that doesn’t have a large random sample. Your figure of 80% is of those who are active on CAF, and who decided to read this thread, and who felt strongly enough to bother voting on this issue.

Perhaps that number reflects the true percentage in the real world. This is less likely to be the case if there is a difference between those who vote in thread polls and those who don’t, or a difference between those who would read a thread with this title and those who wouldn’t, or a difference between mass attendees who are active on CAF and those who are not.

Well you are absolutely correct.
The sample size is rather small. However I would note that the relative percentages have changed little between the sample size of around 50 votes and now at around 100 votes. Thus I have a certain confidence in extrapolating the percentages to a larger sample.

There may certainly be a difference between those, “who felt strongly enough to bother voting on this issue”. However by this very statement we may infer that choice number three, (the “I don’t care what form” choice) should actually be a larger percentage than is shown here.

In any event this is the only poll, in the only place, we have to go on. 🤷
If you’re interested, I had conducted a similar poll about how people felt about the OF v EF and the numbers there are quite similar to those here. That Poll is Here

Peace

I sing in a schola, three Masses per Sunday, so I’d pretty much be committed anyway. If this were not the case, I’d switch to an OF Mass.

I don’t know how to start a thread but maybe someone out there will do this one…

What if “YOUR” mass time was ONLY an OF ?
would you…
  1. Be obedient to your faith, go and pray that God has His way?
  2. Would you prefer driving 50 miles more or less to avoid an OF?
  3. Would you go with a critical mindset and the intention of correcting the priest about every thing he does wrong?
  4. Would you just not go at all?
It would be interesting to see the numbers on that:D
.

See? Now that’s what I mean. We already had that happen when the NO was first unveiled in the late 60s-early 70s and yet here we are.

As far as a “critical mindset”, well some abuses (and even the Pope recognizes that some abuses crept in) “pop” out–don’t even have to look for them. Sometimes as far as the abuses in the NO, Mother Angelica was right–it’s the “Electric Church”, everytime one turns around there’s another shock.
