· 5. Fruits: the Catholic charismatic renewal is the second largest christian group in the world, second only to the catholic church. It has been in existence for only 40 years, with very little media attention. Only God is capable of such a feat. On a personal level, God used it to bring me and many others back to practcing the catholic faith, and my faith is much stronger because of it.
·
· 6. And lastly, God bless, and keep an open mind. Protestants miss out on so much because they dont believe in certain things (the intercession of Mary and the saints, the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, Adoration of the Eucharist, confession, penance etc). It is the same with catholics and the Charismatic renewal. If you dont believe, you miss out. For me the charismatic renewal compliments my faith and makes it easier to live it (actually it has supercharged my faith!). And in the battle to get to heaven and fight spiritual warfare, I need every tool, every grace, every help I can get.

· Peace of Christ

One more point
  1. Laying of Hands You said: " He is not some force or fire that can somehow be tapped into by laying on of hands." Actually, Jesus taught the disciples to lay hands on the sick in order that they be healed. How did the disciples heal people, if not with the power of the Holy Spirit? You are right when you say that we all receive the Holy spirit in confirmation. Charismatic teaching doesn’t contradict any of the church doctrines. But how many Kids have you seen walking around healing people, speaking in tongues and performing miracles the day they were confirmed? None I bet. Why? Because they are spiritually immature, have not been taught how to use the gifts and they do not have knowledge of the gifts. Remember that the disciples were taught by Jesus himself for 3 years how to exercise the charisms ( healing teaching preaching, miracles, prophecy, etc). The charismatic renewal teaches, discerns, and prays for the release of these gifts.

MOST IMPORTANT NOTE: GOD WORKS WONDERS IN MANY WAYS

PLEASE DON’T PUT GOD’S ACTION IN A BOX. (Laying of hands, speaking in tongue, use of oil, saliva, spittle of mud, prayer etc… they are all valid actions of God. Don’t teach God.)

Do not shrink the power of the Holy Spirit in our insignificant human mind.(Do not overly debate on how should the Holy Spirit acts or how powerful He is. God is all powerful and infinite. we are not)

Allow God to do His work through you/us.

What is left to do is just to enjoy the experience and be grateful to GOD that He comes to us even in our unworthiness.

We do not NEED to attend charismatic group meetings to fully benefit from the Holy Spirit. Anyone who says that is necessary is a fool and the Church does not teach that.

We have Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the Magesterium.
We have the Sacraments.
These are sufficient for ALL Catholics to be complete.

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! But please refrain from throwing muds. GOD COMES TO US IN MANY WONDROUS WAYS. If some tells they meet God this way, BE IT.

I do not belong to a charismatic group. I did not call upon God either to make me the way I am today but HE CAME TO ME… in my sufferings. That’s His way of telling me, HE LOVE ME and HE WILL ALWAYS BE WITH ME. Even long before I have a matured view about the faith, God is already with me I FIRMLY BELIEVE. He led me to the church to stay.

In our world, where the devil is an arduous seducer… the sacred scripture, sacred tradition, the Magesterium and the sacraments are physical manifestations of GOD that we can always depend upon.

IF YOU LOVE THEM, PROTECT THEM, THEN I CAN SAY… YOU ARE ALREADY COMPLETE.

ANY WORK OF THE SPIRIT THAT LEAD US AWAY FROM THEM, I AM SURE, IS THE DEVIL’S.

God does not take away his consolation when He has given you the gift or you have found your gift. Needless to force yourself in prayers or rhetorics in order to sustain it. Better, USE THAT GIFT, whatever it is. REMEMBER, all gifts are good and necessary no matter how simple or terrible it is. It is always good for your salvation and for the salvation of mankind.
Code:
Once you are using it, no more fuzz, no more forcing things because everything becomes natural already. Good news - GOD'S CONSOLATION NEVER CEASES.
THE BEST WAY TO USE YOUR CHARISM IS TO FILL IN THE MANY MINISTRIES OF THE CHURCH. OK, enjoy serving in the church.

Speaking of sacred scripture, Jesus warned about calling your brother a fool - Matt 5:25. 'if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say ‘You fool’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. (these are Jesus own words.). (Holy Bible, CAtholic Edition, New Revised Standard Edition).

Do you have something the against the charismatic renewal or people that are involved? DId you have a bad experience with it? The Holy Spirit has used it to change my life and has brought millions of lapsed catholics (myself included) back to practicing the catholic faith, and my faith is much stronger because of it. God has also used the gifts to heal millions of people. Further, Popes Benedict and John Paul 2 have both endorsed it strongly.

If it’s not your cup of tea, don’t attend the meetings, dont become involved. There are plenty of movements and spiritualities within our church that can deepen ones faith. Nobody said it’s for everyone.

Please … please… please! DO NOT CREDIT THE PROTESTANTS for the popularity of the charismatics or the actions of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The protestants were not yet around when the christian faith is being established by God through Jesus Christ and afterwards the Holy Spirit after the resurrection of Christ. It is the Holy Spirit who was sent after that time to lead us to the way the truth and the life established by God and materialized through Christ Jesus.

It is a fact that cant be disputed: Pentecostalism in the 20th century preceeded the Catholic Charismatic movement. God chose, for whatever reason, to come upon the protestants through a new outpouring of His Spirit before he did the same for the catholic church. This was God’s plan. God works through all christians to achieve his purposes.

THANK YOU FOR THE GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING. Thank you for being not harsh to the catholic faith. YES, we are all Christians - the catholic and the pentecost. The sun still shines for you and me, a proof that God’s love is just for His creation.

However, singling out catholic charismatic movement as sole holy spirit action in the catholic church is a very wrong notion. The action of the gifts of the Holy Spirit have been in the catholic church since its beginnings.Without it, I believe, no christian faith would be present today. Catholic charismatic movement is just one spirituality of the catholic church. Why not include in your list the many other spirituality and movements in the catholic church which dated as early as 1st century. Each being led by various gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I am a Jewish woman who converted to what I refer to as “generic” Christianity 4 years ago, and I am currently in the process of becoming Catholic (I’m in RCIA). To make a long story short, I received a charismatic gift (tongues) literally in the middle of praying to God about whether Jesus was “the real deal”. I was alone when this happened and hadn’t had ANY contact with any kind of charismatic movement or church. In fact, at the time this happened to me, I had no awareness of the description in Acts about Pentecost whatsoever (I’d not read any of the New Testament at that time). The only awareness I’d had about tongues was that I’d heard about it on the news once when I was living in Texas about 10 years ago. I had dismissed the entire thing as delusional. FWIW, at that time in my life I was I was somewhere between atheist and agnostic and didn’t practice Judaism at all (not since I’d been made to do so as a child) and didn’t believe in miracles or the supernatural realm at all.

I do not currently consider myself to be a charismatic Christian despite having the ability to speak in tongues, thus once I am Catholic, I do not think that I will think of myself as a “charismatic Catholic”. Rather, I think of myself as a Christian (and soon to be Catholic 🙂 who happens to have a charismatic gift.

Yeah, I have this spiritual gift, but I am pretty reserved about it – I don’t use it in public. I only use it as a private prayer language.

Hope that this helps the OP and anyone else who might be reading.

Yes, they are. A better way of saying it would be–A Catholic Charismatic is one who has a special interest and devotion to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the forgotten member of the Trinity. We do receive the Spirit in a special way at Baptism and Confirmation, but only through growth in holiness and awareness of his power are we able to make use of his many gifts. Think about the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and what a difference this made in the Apostles. Before they received the Spirit, they lacked courage–they ran away at the Crucifixion. After the Spirit came, they were able to preach and teach , and most died for their faith. The Spirit is the source of courage, fortitutude, boldness among many other gifts. Check out the scripture about Pentecost to appre:thumbsup:ciate the power of the Spirit. When someone says they are Charismatic, they are inferring that they realize the power of the Holy Spirit, and that the Spirit is making a difference in their lives.
I’d say this is a great definition. I know someone who is a contemplative pray-er, who is not at all into the touchy-feely, sing, dance, shout, ect. stereotype of charasmatics. However, she does have the gift of praying in tongues. She keeps her gift private, but uses it often to pray in a whisper for people when she is alone. She has only told a few people about this gift. Everyone knows by her words and actions that she has a very strong faith, and a light about her, but she is not at all a person who is loud or has to be the center of attention. She loves going to adoration and praying the rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy, but is not into prayer groups, ect.

I suspect that the poster above is correct, and that there are many charismatics who are quiet and contemplative. A charismatic is not necessarily that hand-holding, arms-waving stereotyped person. And, perhaps the loud touchy-feely worshipers are not all charismatic?

You are all right. depending on the gift that you have.If is prayers, it is expected that you spend more time in prayer; if is suffering... usually you are suffering alone.

In my case, I need to be in public, I need to prowl places, people, circumstances and etc. because it demands so of my gift - deliverance. We have to remember that there are gifts that are not for ourselves alone, there are gifts that we are called to share in order to proclaim the greatness and love of God.

But I am not the show off type. I converse, I touch, I invite to any of the sacrament, sometimes I sing, I use sacramental, I suffer and I pray. As long as I can get into the senses of the victim or get access to the place or even knowledge of the circumstance I can work on them even if I am miles away. They would never know either that I am using my gift on them. I can even forge with other gifted, the gifts that I do not have, should their gift is needed in the case.

I have my limits too. My gift does not work according to my will, it's always God's will. My gift does not work if I am not pure body, soul and spirit, so I need to confess and receive the Eucharist as often. It does not work along with sin that is why I need to be virtuous. Whether the limitations annoy me? Not at all. I enjoy It. I love it. The fullness of my gift comes when I complied with those. The result: I do not tire, I am not afraid, I don't hurt, I don't even exert effort, I am not confused etc. Most importantly, I am happy and even more energetic to serve it.

You really believe that!. Than you are a Pentecostal not a Roman Catholic.

We do not NEED to attend charismatic group meetings to fully benefit from the Holy Spirit. Anyone who says that is necessary is a fool and the Church does not teach that.

Thistle you might like to understand that charismatic related people are taught that in the BIBLE God (through the word of God) and Jesus both tell ALL people NOT to call any person a “fool” (ever), it is not our right, and especially siince God made us to His likeness.
You might like to read James 3 : 5 on wards.
And then read
Galatians 5: 22.24. and then finish with
1 Corinthians 12,
on to 1 Corinthians 13.

We have Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the Magesterium.
We have the Sacraments.
These are sufficient for ALL Catholics to be complete.
When a person contradicts the bible ( in calling others a fool or other) then you are right, it is not the Holy Spirit but the spirit of man for we are all called to Love one another as Jesus told us.
It is not the group we join that leads us to God, but the leader who is God that leads us to the group for God to be blessed. If it is the charismatic group then that is God’s choice for us, to others to clean the steps, or mow lawns or to help the sick, ether way it is God to whom the glory goes, not the servant.

Peace,
when one finds God in their heart to give and see God in others, then we will find peace in God, for God will have conqured our waywould heart.
Godbless

JoeyPio, Could you tell me what the gift of deliverance is?

To everyone who is reading this who have been blessed with special gifts of the Holy Spirit, would you be able to help me? I know three people who have been diagnosed with cancer in the last couple of weeks. And another person I know and love hit rock bottom with depression because of a difficult family situation. And my husbands friend committed suicide. He has young children and fell into despair when he lost his job and drained his savings to provide for his family.

I posted another thread asking about the gift of healing but nobody has responded to it. I would love to receive this gift so I can bring God’s peace and healing to all the broken people He puts in my life. My heart yearns to bring His peace and hope to these people in a profound way. I will continue praying and hope that my normal, not-the-big-gift-of-healing prayers work. But in the meantime, I’d love to know how God chooses who He will give that gift to.

Again, to all of you who have gifts of the Holy Spirit, could you please pray for the above people? Especially those of you who have the gift of healing.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Thats funny!! I’m catholic to the bone. It is a fact though: the pentecostal movement preceeded the catholic charismatic movement. I believe in the catholic faith being the one true faith, protestants have partial truth where we have the fullness of truth. Which is why i wonder why the pentecostal movement preceeded the charismatic one. I guess no one can answer that question : the Holy Spirit moves where He wants.

I think we can learn alot from protestants actually: they’re enthusiasm, they’re willingness to step out in faith. I was in the supermarket a few days ago and approached by 2 complete strangers who offered to pray over me. And their Words of Knowledge were spot on! I have trouble stepping out to pray in tongues at a meeting amongst friends and these guys were walking up to complete strangers. Talk about stepping out in faith.

Hey Anne,

I’d like to try to answer some of your questions.

How does God choose? I don’t think anyone can answer that fully. No one knows the mind of God. The Holy Spirit does have the tendency, to choose unlikely candidates though.

Healing: It is a good thing to desire the gifts, but I’ll make 2 points. 1) It is advisable to join a charismatic group, because they will nurture any gifts you have and help to discern them also. 2) Better than hoping for a particular gift is to try to discern the actual gifts that you have. Whilst you may desire the gift of healing, God has given you the gifts that are just right for you with which you can do the most good in the world. I believe you already have these gifts , they just need to be developed. The prayer for the release of these gifts is done during the life in the spirit seminar which usually runs 1 night a week for 8 weeks. As you can imagine, one needs to prepare to receive power. You may indeed have the gift of healing. I encourage you to do some homework, find a group to help in discernment and development of your gifts. Above all, ask Jesus to guide you in this.

Your friends with cancer: It is a good thing to pray for your friends. There is a charism known as ‘intercessory prayer’ in which a person has a special ability to pray for others, with amazing results.

As for suicide, i used to be suicidal and severely depressed. I received prayer for this and slowly, over a period of time i was healed.(of wanting to die) This included an eight week life in the spirit seminar where most of the psychological healing took place. Remember, Healing prayer is effective for psychological issues too.

I was exposed to Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and the like while I was at a non-denominational church and felt very comfortable with it. At first, I too was surprised by it, but quickly warmed up to it. Also, I remember the moment I was able to speak in tongues as being one of happinness and joy. I never felt it was weird or whatnot.

Thank you for posting your heart, it is to people as yourself that in your humility God takes note and will consider what gift He might allow you the use of.
For me I have used all gifts on occasions and I mean ALL, however it is NOT the ability to use but the ability to allow the heart to use the God given gift in LOVE of God and for His children that God is anointed by. For using the gift because we might have the “faith”, will only leave a person dry.

You and your partition on my prayer chain and in love for God’s children and for my God I will pray for your intentions.

Godbless you
littleone.
