While reading the commentaries linked with various scripture passages recently, I’ve seen the term “gloss” used pretty frequently.

I’ve looked up “gloss” in the dictionary and note that it is defined as an interpretation, however, I still don’t understand the term as it relates to particular people or events from the Bible.

Can someone give me a simpleton’s explanation?

Thanks!!

If something is called a gloss, I am pretty sure that means it is a comment or explanation that was not the work of the original writer. It is a later addition.

I thought a gloss was what a glass turns into; thats when you know you went over your drinking limit.
