What is a progressive catholic?

Hi,

I was talking with a jewish friend of mine today. She told me that her son-in-law is catholic and they are raising their children Jewish. I said to her that her son-in-law must not be too much into his faith. She said he was a progressive catholic. I didnt ask her to elaborate because I dint want to appear too stupid:o But, I thought, HUH:eek: She also told me that jews ordain women rabbis.:eek: I was stunned. I didnt think they believed in that.

So, my question was what is a progressive catholic?

Well, I don’t know what a progressive Catholic is, but my husband, who is Jewish, repeatedly told me that a woman cannot be a rabbi. Two weeks ago, we went to his cousin’s wedding, and guess what? I saw my first female rabbi.
 
Just a fancier word for liberal, do-your-own-kind-of-thing Catholic.
 
I think “progressive” in this case means “open minded”, “tolerant”, “pliable”, “flexible”, etc., etc. In other words, he’s so flexible, he’s probably squeezed himself right out of the faith.

I know isnt it shocking. I though they didnt believe in that. Wait, come to think of it, I went to a Jewish wedding where there was a women Rabbi. I forgot about that. They must be caving in to the women’s movement as well. I wonder if they allow it in Israel or if it is just a USA thing.

My experience is that folks who label themselves as “progressive catholics” are those who prefer a less traditional, more liberal style of Church worship and faith assent, i.e., heterodoxy. Some of these folks are wantonly dissident, others are simply naive of the true faith and swept along with lure and promise of newness in belief and expression of being associated with a “progresive” group/parish of Catholics.

That is what I thought. I guess progressive sounds nicer then liberal. I didnt want to offend my friend so I didnt say the word liberal because I think she may have disagreed.

As has been noted progressive is another term for liberal in reference to their faith.

To simplify the issues of women rabbi you can note that there are generally three types of Jews:

Orthodox, Conservative and Reform.

Orthodox do not allow a rabbi to be a woman
Conservative began to allow women in the 1980’s
Reform have generally always allowed women.

progressive catholic sounds like a nice way of saying a non practicing Catholic.
 
It means he’s a Catholic who is “progressing” on his personal road to Hell…😦

A “progressive” Catholic is a Catholic who is slowly making his or her way out of the Catholic Church.
 
I think it is a person who picks and chooses which tenets of the Catholic Church he/she chooses to follow. They do as they please and always seem to be able to justify it in their own minds. I pray for them.
 
I have been called “progressive” several times before.

Well I guess, “progressive catholic” means “catholics who are not affraid of progress” 😉
