What is a Protestant?

I heard Fr. Corapi on relevent radio say “that are a great many Baptists going to heaven even though they only have two sacraments.” I beleive our sacraments are the tools we use to strengthen our faith. Catholics have have more tools but that doesn’t mean only we get to heaven.

Sometimes I hear Protestants disreguard good works when they preach about Sola Fide. I wonder why they count so heavily on bible verses that tell us we are saved by faith, but forget the ones that tell us our faith is dead without good works?

Love in Christ,
Chris
Sorry about the double post, but I want to say something on that.

It is not that all preachers of protestant disregard the good works portion. My pastor preaches that good works alone can not get you to Heaven, but not doing good works does not mean you don’t go to heaven. Doing good works allows you to grow in faith, so in a sense, without doing good works would generally bring death to your faith.

I guess what I am trying to say, that not ALL protestants disregard that statement. I guess it is interpretation of the “faith is dead without good works”.
I truly cannot understand why Protestants cannot see this simple truth…
The truth you speak of is the same truth. The difference is the ways to live the truth.

A protestant can be called anyone who is Christian while not belonging to the Catholic Church or one of the Orthodox Churches. The individual Protestant church may or may not trace its roots back to the Reformation, but most large demoninations do to some degree. There is only one true common belief: Jesus is Lord. Everything else can be problematic (including the Trinity). Some Protestants today do not like the term, as they are not protesting anything, but that is a stance that is very unhistorical. The idea of sef-interpretation of scripture is a by-product of the reformation, but not all protestants feel that that is an important part of faith (studying is, interpreting is not).

Anglicans are their own branch. They broke free in protest of a ruling of the Pope, but there is much more involve. They are Protestant, but not Reformation Protestant. Baptists, Methodists, Chuch of God, Chuch of CHrist, Church of God in Christ are some examples. Just pick up a phone book and you can see how many there are in your home town.

I hope that helps a little
I would be very careful in tagging the Eastern Orthodox church as “protestant” for we are the Catholic church of the east.

One who protests I guess 🙂

I am a legal protestant. It grieves me that society believes it is composed of law abiding citizens who are good honest folk and who need protection from criminals. 😦

I have worked in the criminal justice system for nearly 20-years and the reality is far from that simple 😛
