Hello peeps!! šŸ˜‰

How does one become saved in the Catholic Church? I was told by a sister that we are all trying to find God the best way we know how and that we don’t need to believe in Jesus. I told her that I joined CAF and she said she has respect for the apologetics but the Bible is just stories to guide you in life. WT-HECK? That is not the Catholic Church I was raised in. Did the Catholic Church change its teachings? Does it matter that I am Catholic. I mean she did tell me ā€œGod would understandā€. I don’t understand if we cant be assured of our own salvation how can she be so sure that God would understand if we don’t believe or deny him? I am sorry if this is long. Thanks!! šŸ‘

It looks like that woman is in heresy. I am sorry to hear that. The Catholic Church does believe that we need to believe in Jesus and that the bible is way more than ā€˜just stories’. The Catholic Church hasn’t changed it’s teachings in a VERY long time. It does matter that you are Catholic.

My personal thoughts: One becomes saved (not just in the Catholic church, but by definition) by being reconciled with God. This can only be done by Grace. Grace gives us specifically the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love. Virtue brings us to the sacraments (which is by definition an outward sign of Gods grace). The Sacraments reconcile us with and draw us to God.

This is to say that we are saved only by grace, but we see an outward sign of that grace and progress toward sanctification while here on this earth.

There is nothing you can do to ā€œbe savedā€ but to surrender your life fully to God. The rest is God’s grace.

I’m not a scholar or a religious, but here are some of my thoughts.

But perhaps it is more fruitful to talk about Truth than what we need to be ā€œsavedā€. We are not about glorifying ourselves by getting to some glorious afterlife. We are about glorifying God in every moment. We desire salvation because seeking salvation glorifies God. In the same way, we seek Truth because bearing Truth glorifies God. I Think I would argue that being Catholic means seeking Holiness, seeking Truth, and seeking Salvation. This thought seems to correlate well with Love the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul. So Maybe I should say that being Catholic means Loving the Lord with all you heart, mind, and Soul, and loving your neighbor as yourself.

What I am trying to point out is that we should not first focus on ā€œhow are we savedā€ but rather first focus on ā€œwhere does the command to be saved come fromā€. If that command comes from something within ourselves that wishes to be glorified then we will likely never find a way to fulfill that command. But if that command comes from God and we fulfill it because we Love God and it is right and just that we do so, then surely we have a way to fulfill the command. What father commands his child to do the impossible? Neither does God, our father command us to do the impossible.

Hello peeps!! šŸ˜‰

How does one become saved in the Catholic Church?
You don’t. There’s no such thing as ā€œSaved.ā€ That is a protestant concept that exists to sooth people and make their particular definition of Christianity appealing. Salvation is a continuous activity that you strive towards throughout your entire life. It is a struggle, and it is hard, but the ultimate reward is more than worth. The concept of being ā€œsavedā€ essentially acts to remove the struggle, and remove the requirement of continuously striving to better yourself, and this is why it appeals to so many people. We are ā€œSavedā€ by God, and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, but that doesn’t mean we can’t just stop working on our faults.
I was told by a sister that we are all trying to find God the best way we know how and that we don’t need to believe in Jesus.
While it is true that not everyone in Heaven believed in Jesus in life (I assume, being as I’m not in heaven I can’t really know) as a person who has been given the knowledge of Christ and his works and church it -is- necessary for you to believe in him. There is a big difference between someone who doesn’t believe because they cannot (either they don’t know, or it has been made impossible for them through the acts of people who purport themselves to be Christian, but act against the will of God at every turn), and someone who makes the choice to disregard Christ as a myth or simply a ā€œgood person.ā€ The latter is a mortal sin because you are literally rejecting God and the gift of salvation that he has given us through Jesus Christ.
I told her that I joined CAF and she said she has respect for the apologetics but the Bible is just stories to guide you in life. WT-HECK?
I feel bad for your sister, that her belief has degraded to that degree, and applaud you for seeking knowledge and understanding from your fellow Catholics. We will support you as best we can, with as much knowledge as we can muster. As for the bible being just stories, that is another sad trend of our society, who don’t recognize it as truth simply because there weren’t video recorders around to capture everything Christ did on film.
That is not the Catholic Church I was raised in. Did the Catholic Church change its teachings?
You’re right, it’s not. Sadly, far too many of our Catholic brothers and sisters do not understand what it is to be Catholic, and instead opt for their own, watered-down variations on belief. This is called ā€œcafeteria Catholicismā€ and it is a sad trend in our relativistic society. The Church has not changed it’s teaching on the core principles of faith for 2000 years, and we will not change them in the future, to do so would make us no better than the protestants who seek to abide by their own interpretations of God, rather than in the truth and law he has revealed to mankind.
Does it matter that I am Catholic.
Yes. You were lucky enough to be born into the truth. I thank God for it every day, and you should to. Being Catholic is more than a declaration, it is at the core of your person. It enlightens you and leads to do good for other. Catholicism can provide you with the guiding principles by which to live your life, a good and full life, filled with the love of family, friends and God. It is also the best way to ensure that you get to live forever with God in the afterlife.
I mean she did tell me ā€œGod would understandā€.
I imagine that she is right, God is love, and love is understanding, merciful and patient. That being said, why would God force himself on you if you have dedicated your life to rejecting him? God does not send people to hell, people choose hell. Hell is the absence of God, and so that is where people who seek to live without him go. It is their choice, and it likely pains him to no end to be rejected. (Imagine your child completely and totally rejecting you and everything that you try to do for them. Now magnify that by the millions of people who actively chose to reject God… I honestly don’t understand how he stands it, I would have wiped out humanity a long time ago.)
I don’t understand if we cant be assured of our own salvation how can she be so sure that God would understand if we don’t believe or deny him? I am sorry if this is long. Thanks!! šŸ‘
She cannot be sure. She is engaged in a logical fallacy. It is -impossible- to know for sure until we are dead, and by then it’s too late. We accept what God has given us and revealed to us because that is what faith is, belief in the absence of absolute knowledge. This, incidentally, is why many atheists make the choice not to believe; they cannot be certain, so why bother worrying about it. This is another logical fallacy, you should look up Pascals Wager and present it to your sister.

As for the length of your post, don’t worry about it. I pray for you, that your strength of conviction only continues to grow in the face of dissension; and I pray for your sister, that she may return to the church and to the love and light of God.

Good luck to you, and I hope this helps.

We know that we are saved By Grace, Through Faith and not By Works because Ephesians 2:8 expressly states this.

ā€œFor it is by grace that you have been saved through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.ā€ The Grace is God’s. The Faith is ours.

John 3:16 is like it: ā€œFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever Believes in him shall not perish but shall have eternal life.ā€ Salvation is by Faith and Faith alone… True Faith, but nonetheless, by Faith. All quotes are from the NIV.

One of the best places for a Catholic to find answers to their questions is in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

This web address may help you to begin to understand what you are seeking, I have found it highly rewarding upon numerous occasions just to sit and puruse this document.

vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p3s1c3a2.htm

God be with you!

An analogy

Jesus built a road to heaven. You can only get to heaven if you follow that road. You don’t have to know that Jesus built the road but if you do get to heaven you did it through Jesus. This is what ā€œno salvation outside of the Churchā€ means.

The Catholic Church has the best road map. If you follow the map you won’t get lost.

You can get lost if you go your own way. You might find your way using bits and pieces of scrap or if you use your memory of the map. But your journey will be more difficult and have useless detours.

If you have two maps, one which is accurate and one that is 3/4 accurate why would anyone want the 3/4 accurate map?

It is true that you don’t need to believe in Jesus. But you do need to follow his road (i.e. do the things he said you need to do - primarily love God and love your neighbor)

The question is why would anyone think that they know better? Do people really believe that for 2,000 years God allowed the Church to exist adding stumbling blocks on the road to heaven?

The reverse is true. The Church is always in the process of removing stumbling blocks that people keep dropping on the road. They think they are ā€œfixingā€ the road (i.e. allowing contraception, abortion, gay sex, etc.)

As for being ā€œsavedā€ you are saved when you reach the end of the road, not while you are on it. It is always possible for you to turn off the road and not get to the end of the road (heaven)

The Protestant idea of once saved always saved is weird. It is also not Biblical.

Salvation:
SALVATION: The forgiveness of sins and restoration of friendship with God, which can be done by God alone (169).
169 "Salvation comes from God alone; but because we receive the life of faith through the Church, she is our mother: "We believe the Church as the mother of our new birth, and not in the Church as if she were the author of our salvation.ā€œ55 Because she is our mother, she is also our teacher in the faith.ā€
"On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they.ā€ ~Acts 15:11
(They is speaking of the Apostles, I believe.)
The Catholic Church teaches faith+works, I think, because if you have faith in Christ, good works should follow. This verse kind of represents that:
ā€œThis saying is trustworthy. I want you to insist on these points, that those who have believed in God be careful to devote themselves to good works; these are excellent and beneficial to others.ā€ ~Titus 3:8
The Bible was written by authors who were guided by the Holy Spirit. The Bible does contain stories, parables, prayers, family trees, sermons, etc. The Bible has to be interpreted correctly; some things are interpreted literally (Eucharist becomes the body & blood of Christ) but some things are interpreted metaphorically (Creation in Genesis; some accept literally, some believe it’s metaphorical). This is what the Church is for, so we know what to believe. Peter speaks about this in 2 Peter.
"Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God. ~2 Peter 1:20
ā€œAnd consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, also wrote to you, speaking of these things as he does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures.ā€ ~2 Peter 3:16
It does matter if you’re Christian or not. True Christians will follow God’s will and worship Him. Those who reject Christ will not be allowed in Heaven. I’m not saying non-Christians won’t achieve salvation, only God knows that and he is a fair and just, but loving, God. But those who deny Jesus, will not be in God’s Kingdom and will be damned.
ā€œEveryone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.ā€ ~Matthew 10:32-33
Hope I helped. I’m continuing to learn about the Church everyday! I encourage you to read your Bible; it is God’s Word and the only book you need for life! God bless. Xoxo. (:

To be saved you must be baptised, Catholic, and die in a state of grace. Of course nobody can know in advance if they will die in a state of grace.

You guys are so loving toward little ole me. I want you to know because of you I am so excited with my faith… xoxo:thumbsup:

Catholics make a distinction between Salvation and Justification.
We achieve salvation after our death.

We can be justified in this life.

Salvation is of the whole man, body and soul.

Justification is of our spirit, and our spirit alone.

Salvation is our entrance into the Beatific Vision.

Justification is our entrance into the state of sanctifying grace.

Salvation is our reward for persevering in grace.

Justification is our reward for accepting grace.

We may or may not persevere in justification, but if we do persevere, we will attain salvation — at the hour of our death.

** How Is A Catholic Saved? **
Repentance and baptism (Acts 2:38 & 22:16 and John 3:1-21) and then following Christ, (John 14:15, Matthew 10:38, 16:24, & 25:31-46, Mark 8:34, Luke 9:23 and Revelation 3:5) which is a lifelong journey and not the oversimplified "plan of salvation" as presented by some non-Catholic communities.

Does anyone know just how many Scriptures the RCC has officially interpreted? I seem to recall reading somewhere that it is a very small number.

some verses and thoughts

Joh_14:6 Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.

The name Jesus, Jeshua (Yeshua, if you will) means ā€œSaviorā€

Yes, you have to believe in Him
that He is the Son of God who died for you and resurrected
and that one day you will also resurrect

You don’t. There’s no such thing as ā€œSaved.ā€ That is a protestant concept that exists to sooth people and make their particular definition of Christianity appealing. Saved? 1Co 15:1 ¶ Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; (KJV)

1Co 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. (KJV)

1Co 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; (KJV)

1Co 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (KJV)

Notice that Pauls says [vs 2] this is the gospel by which you are S-A-V-E-D.

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (KJV)

We trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ after we heard the Word of Truth [the gospel of 1 Cor. 15:1-4], the gospel of our S-A-L-V-A-T-I-O-N, in whom we believed, then the Holy Spirit
S-E-A-L-E-D us until the day our bodies are redeemed.

Simple?

Faith is essential for our salvation but but it is not enough.

James 2:20 - Faith without deeds is useless.

James 2:24 - So you see, a person is justified by works and not by faith alone

James 2:26 - So, just as the body is dead without its spirit, so faith without deeds is also dead

Does it not also say that we have to baptised through water and spirit in order to be saved so faith is not enough to obtain salvation. I believe that we have to continually towards our salvation.

Faith and work are essential for our salvation and through baptism we become part of the body of Christ.

God Bless

Short answer? Through the Life, Crucifixion and Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Long answer? The same as above, but applied through the sacraments, such as Baptism, the Eucharist, Confession, so on and so forth. No, the Catholic Church did not change it’s teachings, nor shall it ever when it comes to doctrine. I can assure you that it still has, and always will, preach the Gospel, which is that Jesus Christ came to save sinners, and that we who are baptized are now in the Body of Christ, the One, Holy, Catholic Church.

I am afraid to say that it appears (though I can’t judge her heart ultimately) that the sister is in the same position of many ā€œcafeteria Catholicsā€, who believe that Catholicism merely means ā€œbelieving in Godā€. Many Catholics, both lay and religious, have fallen into the trap of thinking that faith has no real application in the world, that ā€œDoing good thingsā€ is all that matters.

If you can, please purchase a Catechism of the Catholic Church. Or, you can read it for free at the Vatican website, as well as here, where you can put in any paragraph number or topic-word, and you can find a specific paragraph: ccc.scborromeo.org.master.com/texis/master/search/?sufs=0&q=&xsubmit=Search&s=SS
It’s a good start to learning about the teachings of the Church. A solid example from the Catechism is in this:
620 Our salvation flows from God’s initiative of love for us, because ā€œhe loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sinsā€ (1 Jn 4:10). ā€œGod was in Christ reconciling the world to himselfā€ (2 Cor 5:19).

Salvation is spending eternity enjoying being together with God (also called the Beatific Vision).

One of the best resources we have to guide us in coming know the faith is the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Priests and catechists/teachers may or may not give you the straight scoop. But it’s al there to find when we need it.
