What are the thoughts of those who understand the religions he was involved in?
He was a JW and it sounds like he left to become a muslim.

What thoughts can anyone offer about the mindset of this man?
A longtime neighbor and former member of Mr. Oliveira’s church said Mr. Oliveira had been a lifelong Jehovah’s Witness before turning to Islam two years ago.

Islam attracts those that want an excuse to be violent- there are many Muslim converts in prison.

Islam attracts those that need structure- tells them everything how and what to eat, how to dress, how and when to pray, etc. every aspect of your life. How to react to non-muslims-strike terror, subdue or kill them.

Then there are those Muslims raised in Islam- I think Islam kills brains cells.

Having spent some time with jws, I can understand the “lonely” aspect of this man. They (jws) are so isolated from everything and everyone who does not walk and talk jwism. If he left the jws and began to dabble in islam, …well, there’s the rest of the story. Also, jws do not mourn their dead and cast a raised eyebrow at any of their members that do. jws are to "rejoice when one dies if they were “strong in the truth” and disregard the deceased if he was an inactive member or had left the organization.
No excuses at all but this guy was apparently VERY confused.

I didn’t know that Catholics had to recite the Bible endlessly rocking to the rythm of the verses as young children. Having to learn and memorize verses under fear of a beating!!

LOL! I did know that nuns stood over students with rulers though!!

It is possible he joined the Nation of Islam. I do not know this for sure.

To be honest recent converts to Islam in the USA are a very good place to start evangalising as even the muslims themselves worry as 75% or new conversts in the states leave the Islamic faith within 3 years. So all you evangelical christians get going theirs your target get them back even sooner. If you dint believe me check this link
its muslims discussing their problem. Also maybe we should try get these people before the fall into error in the first place

The bolded part above is so unconstructive and such a stereotypical view of Muslims. Thank goodness for a voice of reason, below

There is no such thing as the “Nation of Islam”

If there isn’t…I think Louis Farrakhan should be notified because he is under the impression that there is.

I like how you made the very thought of catholics being brainwashed a silly idea, unfortunately the catholics here actually missed your way of highlighting that.

And it is just as easy to evaluate his brand of Jew hating as it is for me to evaluate the other version of this hateful theocracy in the middle east. Some call this stereotyping…others call this deciding what is decent and what is not.🤷

Thank you for catching that. I received an infraction for what was seen as an attack on Muslims. I pray for Muslims, they are caught in a violent cult.

It is an attack on Islam and who I know is in control of Islam The one being that would deny the crucifixion of Christ… I think people forget the power of satan and how evil can control people.

I am not sure why the OP is asking former JW’s this question. It seems the man left the JW faith 2 years before the incident, perhaps because it teaches non-violence. Could the OP clarify the question? I am a former JW.

The JW’s do teach non physical violence, but they are very guilty of a different type of violence by how they treat their own members through their disfellowshipping mandate.

While not the norm, this man turning to Islam doesn’t really surprise me at all. I’ve seen some turn to Eastern practices, such as Buddhism, as well. Once they lose faith as a JW, many lose faith in ALL Christianity. This should come as no surprise, as JW’s are taught that there is no salvation outside the WTBS and any denomination outside their own is vile and corrupt. For many, they then become an empty cup.

I think the individuals confusion, perhaps also depression, may have driven him to seek solace and understanding in the religions he investigated, but he did not find what was needful.

It wasn’t what he learned in those faiths that made him what he was, he brought that with him.

No, you are not wrong. If caught, disfellowshipping can be meted out. In my experience, what happens in alot of cases, some will think they can come on sites like this “teach and non JW’s a thing or two”, and then count the time as part of their field service work. Most of them learn real quick on this site that they don’t know nearly as much as they think they do, even about their own religion, and tuck tail and leave. Some, however, by the power of the Holy Spirit, have come out of the WTBS and into the Church through sites like this.

Just curious, what thread are you speaking about?

Thank you Hesychios,

You reminded me how I had made a major error from the start. I went from conclusion to search.
That was the wrong way to go about it. I see the flaw I made by assuming a causation/correlation here.

I like being wrong, because then I get to go back and look at it to see why and where I got it wrong.

It helps me to see how I may be doing this in other things.

That’s why I am here.
