What is marriage?

I know that is a very big and open question, but I’d be interested in people’s views on what they believe the key differences are between married couples and unmarried couples.

Marriage is a Sacrament, one of the two Sacraments of service (the other is Holy Orders).
Marriage is a calling as noble and holy as the priesthood itself.
Marriage is a blessing that the two spouses administer to each other.
Marriage is sacred and is guided by its creator, it is not just an arbitrary social ritual (and so cannot be changed like one).
Marriage is the place were people reflect the love of the Trinity.

Marriage is a grace, a Sacrament, given to one man and one woman by God to share in the miracle of creation and to love and support each other for their entire lives while on their journey to heaven.

Jesus tells us; “So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Mt 19:16)

“The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is ordered to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation and education of children. Christ the Lord raised marriage between the baptized to the dignity of a sacrament” (CCC 1660).

Sacramentally unmarried couples lack the grace that strengthens the perfect commitment which God gives us, to persevere “for better or for worse till death do us part!”

We cannot do it on our own, we need God’s help!

Difference between married and non-married couples?

Commitment.

Do people think marriage be non sacramental? - i.e. will the marriage between two atheists be consider “blessed”.

BTW - I’m not trying to lead this anywhere in particular - just trying to sort out in my own mind what different types of “partnerships” and “marriages” exist and what some of the key differences are. I certainly consider my own marriage sacramental.

A marriage that is completely outside the context of the sacred would be a marriage in the legal sense, but not a sacrament. Matrimony is a sacrament that leaves a mark on those involved that can never be erased (it’s indelible).

For an excellent explanation on Marriage as the Greatest Sacrament in the Catholic Church check This site: orthodoxinfo.com/praxis/marriage.aspx

I don’t know what some here will think but I think it’s one of the better explanations that I’ve heard in a while.
