What is one of your favorite passages in the Bible and why?

I like Matthew 7:13-14, the “Wide and Narrow Gates” because it is a passage the Lord used to draw me to Him.

Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

I needed to know if I was part of the few or the many and was struck by the last half of the last verse “there are few who find it”. I knew I believed in the existence of God all my life, but I was deluded in my thinking that I was okay with God.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not
to your own understanding. In all your ways
acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.

It was the first thing I ever read in the Bible that grabbed hold of
my brain. I wanted to read the Proverbs just because I like short
words of wisdom. Not long, I’m not that smart. When I saw
“lean not to your own understanding”, I was baffled. Our own
understanding is the only understanding we have. If we
understand someone elses understanding, then it’s our
understanding. Well after all these years, I continue to be
baffled by it, yet it is a guiding force in my life. Just to always
remember that our understanding as humans is limited, and it
can’t be trusted or relied on to direct our paths correctly.

It is also an exercise in my life, because when I do not feel
guided by the Lord, I ask myself: In which of my ways am I
not acknowleding Him? and try to correct it.

“God with us,” Emmanuel, is fulfilled in this passage. “Lo, I am with you, even unto the end of the age.” I kept hearing this as I was laid up with a bad back for months, and shocked to hear that Joni Ericson Tada, the quadripalegic, also had that same passage come to her during her long recovery. Thank You, Jesus.

This passage touches my heart. I feel that I am a better person in this life when I give freely of myself and my time to assisting others. I feel this is akin to walking a life that Jesus would have walked.

One of my favourites - kind of an unofficial mantra of mine - is ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ (Philippians 4:13).

It’s a great motivational thought for those days when I really don’t want to even get out of bed, or those other times when I have to do something that makes me nervous or is otherwise unpleasant.

I like the forgiving of sins and authority to forgive passages. Forgiving our sins is key part that enable us to make it to heaven for we all sin.

John 20-20-22

So many wonderful passages have been mentioned.

But, Prov 3:5-6 is special because it speaks so clearly to can-do, self-sufficient, progress-minded modern people who think they can figure everything out for themselves, reform and fix everything themselves, etc. I cite it to my kids whenever we read Genesis 3:6, which describes Eve using her good common sense.

Since that’s taken, how about the Shema Yisrael (Deuteronomy 6:4–9, 11:13-21, and Numbers 15:37–41)?

Catholics by virtue of the Seven Sacraments all instituted by Christ, have the inside track and access to many graces not available outside the Catholic Church.

God’s gifts of freewill and intellect are given to us by God with the EXPRESS purpose of us doing the above and there- by proving our Love for our God

Says it all for me. Though I can write out the equation for various astrophysical processes, I am confident that there is a higher purpose to everything than mere chance.

My favorite Bible passage is a rather long one- the Gospel of St. Matthew chapters 5,6,&7- known as the sermon on the mount.

When edver I’m down or face something that I’m unsure about, I read this Sermon of Our Lord and it lifts me up and generally straightens me out.

How can I just choose one passage? When I think of one passage, I think of how it means in context to the whole. I love what the entirety of God’s revealed Word tells us. Implicit in this is that we understand what our Lord really and truly intends, and not let anyone or anything get in our way, including ourselves. If we allow anything to get in the way of finding the Truth, then we may not know what God’s revealed Word really tells us. After all, we don’t want our own gospel instead of what God has given to us… what good is that?
