As someone else pointed out, power in the scientific, natural sense is energy outpout divided by time.
There’s another sense of power, in that of authority.
We even see that in nature. A pride of lions will have a dominant male for example, and this is a recurring theme throughout living creatures. A bee colony will have a Queen Bee, and the entire hive is organised around her survival and ability to reproduce.
Clearly this arrangement was set up by the same One who designed the universe, and its based on instinct, which I presume is based on DNA in some form or another.
Then there’s the issue of human authority. This intrigues me to some extent. What would Adolf Hitler have been without the German state behind him? Prior to World War I he was bumming around Vienna as a vagabond artist, living hand to mouth. At that stage he must have looked the least likely person to become one of history’s most vicious tyrants.
How did he get the authority to move from vagabond artist to European dictator? In my opinion he got it from the devil, who spotted this peculiar psychopathic character and thought he could use him, in an age of war and despotic political movements - Marxism, Fascism, Nazism.
Who would Pope Benedict be without the Church behind him? Just another octogenarian. Who gave him the authority? In my opinion, Christ did, via His original proclamation to Peter, and through the Holy Spirit, and with the assent of the Church masses.
Then there’s spiritual authority - Gabriel can turn up to Mary and tell her God will overshadow her and she will bear His Son, subject to her agreement, which God probably knew she’d give anyway. In this case, Gabriel is clearly on a mission almost dictated to him by God.
And of course there’s the devil’s authority. Where did it come from? In the end it came from God.
So it all comes from God - natural power in the form of energy over time, in the natural universe He made. Animal hierarchy as delineated by strength and instinct, again a product of the natural universe. Human authority, dependent on the willing cooperation of those who wield the power that flows “from the barrel of a gun”. Spiritual power which flows directly from God.
In the end it all comes from Him.
But as moral creatures we’re responsible for how we use it - the father as head of the family, the priest as shepherd for the parish sheep, the politician for the state, the principal for his school, the cop for his role as law enforcer and so on.
Therefore a butcher like Pilate could have power over Christ only by virtue of the Roman state. I’ll bet he answered for his abuse of power, not only in the obvious case of Christ’s unjust crucifixion, but also for his brutal treatment of those under his power. Small wonder he committed sucide as tradition has it, having given the order to crucify the Son of God to save his own political office.
