This old traditional sat next to a workman at morning Mass a couple times tis week. He had on his work cloths and I thought it was wonderful he was there. We also get farmers here and they are in bib overalls. Again this is acceptable and even encouraged for those that work and want to come to Mass.

several posters have asked why women’s pants and/or 3/4 length sleeves are modesty requirements.

In fact, wearing a dress is less modest than wearing slacks. I recently wore a dress to a conference being held at a Mission where there were seminarians. As the seminarians passed my table I noticed that most of them glanced at my legs. Had I been wearing pants, as were most of the women there, my legs would not have been exposed to their view.

I, personally, don’t think according to these 1928 Standards that for women to wear women’s slacks today it can be considered immodest since slacks are no longer a distinctive male garment.

I’m sorry to sound like an old-timer (I’m only 33), but I can’t stand seeing those teenage girls coming into Church wearing those near panty-showing skirts. I don’t care to see jeans in Church, either.

During the work week I don’t think it’s a horrible thing for people to come in wearing their work clothes as long as they are relatively clean and they don’t work as life guards at the local pool
BUT, on Sundays, the high mass of the week, there is also nothing wrong in expecting people to wear their “Sunday best”.
I see the weekday Masses as ‘food for the journey’ where Sunday is for the praise and glory of God. I know I might get slammed for that, but if you stop and think for a minute I think you’ll understand what I am trying to say.

White for married, black for widowed or white for single, black for married.
In this day and age and the use of Ms even by some married women, one may not want to advertise their marital status by the color of their veil. You actually could even change the color to coordinate with your Sunday best.
Aren’t we progressive?

Agreed (and I’m only 29). If you can’t sit down in it without your underpants touching the seat with no fabric in between, it’s a belt, not a skirt.
I usually see the girls dressed like this coming in with at least one parent. I always wonder “what were you thinking? This is your daughter!” Maybe they don’t want to battle over clothing before Mass, but then why did they buy it in the first place?

Regardless of when the Mass is held it is always an act of Worship to God… I have thought for a minute, but the same keeps coming up… maybe the only reason why people dress up on a Sunday is because it becomes more like a fashion parade… any other time, who cares ! if it’s only Joe the mechanic or Bob the buthcher you might bump in to… if anything they might be better dressed than most. But i agree with you, when going to Mass you should always keep in mind that great occassion when you come face to face with Our Lord in the Eucharist. Until one of the four different parishes I visit for Mass (I go everyday and this takes four different parish schedules) has the air conditioning on to a comfortable temperature, I will continue to wear jean/khaki shorts to weekday Mass.

What on earth is wrong with jeans? As long as they’re clean, not ripped or torn, cover the entire derriere and stomach and are loose enough to be modest? How are they any different from slacks in that case?
Perhaps it’s because my area is inhabited by a lot of students who never wear anything else, but I have absolutely no problem with 'em

To be honest, my husband and I dress differently for Sunday mass than for a weekday mass. If we are catching a Monday or Tuesday mass at noon (when our church offers them) he comes in dirty from work because this is his lunch break, and he’s going right back to work. He’s a construction worker, so he’s got on dirty t-shirts and jeans. I work a less dirty job, so I’m in regular work clothes or jeans. On Sunday, however, we try to make a point to dress up. He usually wears a tie. No one gives us a second look on weekdays except to say “Thanks for showing up”.

I have seen priests wear sandals frequently at Mass. And no, they’re not Franciscans.
I am in a pretty conservative parish and many of the ladies wear sandals. I don’t see anything wrong with it.

About the skirts - Exactly, the parents either bought it for them or let their kids buy AND wear it. Oh well.

Ha, I’m only 34 and hate to sound old fashion as well, but what about those skirts that do go down, to say, the knees, but are extremely clingy and you can see the thongs underneath?
My mother would slap me over the head had I even thought about buying some of these clothes that I see kids wearing…About a veil, I don’t have a pattern, but I want one of these, or something like it…
