What is Purgatory?

I don’t mean to be the party pooper, but Purgatory is a state of divine cleansing as we prepare for Heaven. I don’t think we should be making light of it.

yeah, you’re right…

it’s a mortal sin to have a sense of humor…

the Catholic Church seems to me to be “negligent” in not emphasizing how we can do our Purgatory (a lot of it, even all of it if we choose) by such things as offering up our daily sufferings to atone for our past sins (which have hopefully been sacramentally forgiven in Confession)…

such things as: financial problems, teenagers :D, having to say NO to your sexual urges… :hypno:
you name it…

this is called Expiation… “He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness”

notice it not only mentions forgiveness but being cleansed from ALL unrighteousness…

human nature being what it is, we fight this process… but I’m thankful the Church gives us so many ways to expiate… (rosary… Masses… sacrifice… time spent @ the Real PResence… etc…)🙂
***You’re point is valid, however it does not preclude the absolute need for Purgatory.
First because not everyone is going to do all that is necessary in this life to expetiate the latent effects of our sins.

Second, The latest PEW Report I saw about a year ago, stated that 10% or fewer Catholics are going to Confession even once a year. Clearly God is correct in having both Purgatory and Hell.

Love and prayer’s***

i don’t think we disagree… In the 1st part i said that we can work off some of our purgation… here on Earth… i probably should have added, though, that i don’t think many people work off ALL on Earth…

i say this not because people are lazy about such things … although some obviously are… but because sin and its consequences cause much more… ummm… “damage” to us than we fully realize… and sometimes we aren’t even aware that we need to do some serious purification work…

some people are just working so much these days, it seems… that they don’t “have time” for… such things… so they think…

sufferings for the day:

**I’m not in the Real Presence of Christ :crying::crying:

I had to get out of bed this morning… :crying::crying:

I don’t know anyone like me (except Jesus 😃 … and Ann Coulter…

When you all decide to get serious about this original thread,

I suggest reading the RCC on Purgatory and Fr. F.X. Schouppe’s book - Purgatory.

It is not only eye-openning but very sobering as to the suffering of the poor souls in Purgatory.

You think you have suffering here on earth?..

I’ve read that book…

which is why i offer up every little suffering i cn think of in expiation of my sins…

hence the above…

might as well make light of such things… some sufferings never go away… whether you make light of them or not…

like having to get out of bed in the morning… 😃

seriously…

When was the last time you even heard Purgatory mentioned in Church? Probably the reason why so few go to Confession…

I can understand the struggle with one’s sexual urges. I’m in my 40s and still single (the original 40-year old virgin, to be precise), but the desire is still there…😊

Wow folks, I’ve read all the posts in this thread so far and would like to add my :twocents:.
On EWTN I’ve heard priests describe purgatory as being able to hear the music and smell the banquet, but not participate. It is a place for purification, a purging of the attachment to sin. I’ve heard it’s not all that awful. I’ve not read much about it.
I’m a revert, back three years now. I go to confession once a week because I am such a noodnik. I get my faults and imperfections and any past sins I may have forgotten out in confession. I know the sweet consolation of indulgence when all conditions are met. But give me a few days and I’m back to knowing if I dropped dead at this moment, I wouldn’t be going straight to heaven with my teeming faults and imperfections. 🤷

My purgatory on earth: (or is it penance?)

My mentally ill son.
My unfortunate past.
My life alone (except for my cat).
My persistant grief due to two losses within this past year.

But thanks to God’s grace, I’m fine. My son is secure and receiving care. My past is gone. I’m living with the heavenly host and my departed loved ones, besides the presence of my little cat. My grief is being addressed by an occasional Catholic grief workshop. I’m living my dream of making art, in conjunction with my earlier artistic training, at long last after suffering for years as a legal secretary. They were good to me, but put me through the ringer. So, I’m not looking forward to purgatory; but I understand what the OP means and am grateful.😉

a lot of things aren’t mentioned in homilies these days…

some priests seem to care more about being liked than telling the blasted truth… they will be held accountable for others’ souls… :hypno:

are you really 40 something and a virgin? or just feel like one?

I’m not one… was raped when i was younger… otherwise i would be old and a virgin myself… (at least I’m alive… didn’t want to live after that happened… and then i found Jesus :))…

When younger and even until recently, i was always wanting to be a nun… never thought i’d want to get married (never have either)… but since i’m not a virgin and have lived without “it” for something close to 100 yrs (well, seems like it…🤷) & haven’t done the “self” thing… well… my body, shall we say, is not too happy with me… it wants what it wants… and wants it NOW!! 😃

even so i feel that God has restored my virginity to some extent… 🙂

I can relate to many of your sufferings. My condolences…

i live alone - with no cat… don’t care for the critters… too messy… shed hairs, etc…

but there’s one good thing about them:

they are better than dogs… (not saying much…)

and less trouble than men… (but that definitely isn’t saying much) 😃 Integral Calculus is less trouble than men… WAY… & i know nothing about Integral Calculus… except that it involves math somehow… :whacky:

anyhow… i think Purgatory is experienced in 2 ways in this world: 1) when something terrible happens to you and you don’t immediately offer it up… and then hopefully you offer it up (which actually seems to relieve a little of the pain… or is that just me??) and 2) when one is @ the Blessed Sacrament for long periods of time in total silence. I’ve been told the Souls in Purg are There at the Tabernacle with Jesus… and i totally believe that because… of the way i feel when There… Soemtimes it seems i am (we are?) in a desert… yet there is always Someone with me (us)… someone who cares… its the only place in he world i feel loved… which tells you a lot about my life…

anyway, God bless…:heaven:

Sufferings for the day:

needing something to eat :stretcher:

no human love (which is also on my Things I am Grateful For List) 😃

I’m not in Heaven 😦

no children in my life

I don’t look like 20 yr old Michele Phifer (which is also on my ***Things I am Grateful For ***List - because if you look like that, you will always have a man hanging around…) 😃

I’m pretty sure you are considered a virgin still. The rape was something that happened without your consent. There is something mentioned to that extent in “The Mystery of Love for the Single”; that someone who is raped will still be considered to be a virgin because it was without consent.
As for your body not being happy with you, build up gradually your own program of exercising and your body will smile.😉

Nope, I’m the real deal…:o

When I was in high school I, was really shy. I was also the proverbial 98 lb weakling, and all the girls were interested in the jocks.
When I was in the Navy I was under a lot of pressure to lose my virginity. I even had a couple opportunities to do so (I shan’t elaborate:blush:) but it just didn’t feel right. I wasn’t a Catholic then (or even a Christian), but the thought of being intimate with someone I’d just met in a bar (or other unmentionable places ) was something foreign to me. I figure it was God’s grace in my life…

wish i could say the rape was the last time… but i used to be so uncatechized, so lost… without love… looking in all the wrong places… (still tend to do that  old habits die hard…)

anyhow, i think sometmes virginity is “over-rated”… (at least in Catholic circles…) meaning, well… I used to be so upset because i wasn’t a virgin anymore (True, that’s a real loss…) … I didn’t think any decent man would want me… but in time i realized that marriage is supposed to be about relationship, shared goals, shared interests…sharing Christ (that’s my definition of marriage anyway) not about a piece of flesh in your private area…

and i have yet to find any virgin men over the age of 30… (found one but wasn’t attracted to him…) In other words, there’s that double-standard thing…

I’ve been celibate/chaste for many years and i may be spending my life on Earth “alone” till he end but that doesn’t bother me much… because i’d rather be alone than stuck with someone who… isn’t committed to Christ as i am…

You might wish to order the book “The Mystery of Love for the Single” by Fr. Dominic J. Unger.

I think virgins may have a special place in heaven.

Perhaps the virgin men aren’t easily found.

You may be interested in making a personal/private vow of chastity; since you’re living that way anyway. It’s more of a direction when formalized. I think you’d benefit from the book I mentioned. Someone here on CAF mentioned it to me a while back. It’s a wealth of information for the single vocation.:👍

I’m one (in a million, probably). I’ve thought sometimes about being in a relationship, but it seems all the women I find myself attracted to are already married. Perhaps that’s God’s way of telling me He wants me to remain single…

I hope you’re right Rosalie, about virgins having a special place in heaven…
