What is something you think should be mentioned in a homily but never is

We have a new priest who is wonderful. He preaches the truth very boldly. He does not base his homilies on whether he is going to “offend” anybody and doesn’t worry about if the collections are up. He says the Lord will take care of this. This poor priest has been persecuted greatly for speaking the truth but does not back down. Thank goodness for holy priests!

He made the comment one day; that to whom much is given, much is expected and that if he didn’t preach the truth and respond to the sins he sees committed he would be judged harshly on the last day for the souls of the parishoners of his church.

Nobody wants to hear that we are living a life of sin, but we need to hear it anyway!

The fact that one should not receive the Eucharist if they are in a state of mortal sin. Especially at a wedding, or Holy communion where there are fallen away Catholics who come to celebrate with family and receive.

This was my thought as well.

There isn’t enough teaching on the need for confession and why a Catholic must not receive Holy Communion, while in a state of mortal sin.

Wow!! Where to start!! I think instead of rattling off a littany, I would just say: Wouldn’t it be nice to hear about the doctrine of the REAL CATHOLIC CHURCH? You know…there is such a thing as sin…mortal sin…there really is a heaven, HELL, and purgatory. It would be so nice to actually hear a homily about some basic Catholic spirituality.

I know- but I think that could be solved if there was more teaching during the sermon! I really think we have a few generations of untaught Catholics out there!

so, so true… the biggest complaint i have about the Church is it doesn’t teahc even its own members the true faith… @ least that is the case most of the time…

He’s given homilies on Hell, homosexuality, birth control, abortion, adultery, dangers of gossiping, euthanasia, concupiscence, why we need to go to confession regularly, people who take communion in a state of mortal sin, heresies in the church, the Eucharist, and…hmmm… that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

I wonder why there aren’t more priests like this at least in my area anyway?

That we need to be:

More reverent in church, during Mass.

Open to life (having children, no contracepting).

Sin, and yes venial sins.

Suffering, and how we can be closer to God despite it.

Hmmm…I sometimes think it would be great to have tidbits of the CCC during each mass, or every other mass. Somehow woven into the homily. I didn’t attend Catholic school, and truthfully, I didn’t know a lot of what the Church teaches when it comes to mortal sin, and sexuality within marriage, until doing research on my own about 5 years ago. I think that it would be a valuable addition to mass. I wonder why such issues are really NEVER talked about in a priest’s homily? I have been going to mass regularly for years, and I haven’t heard anything about sexuality in marriage, or much on mortal sin.

He sounds like a really good Priest.
I would love to hear his homilies as well.

no kidding… & the weird thing is, they know (priests) that people respect them, so why would they worry too much about being “disliked” if they brought up sins a lot of the parishioners are guilty of? And even if the people didn’t like the priest for doing that… what are they going to do - stone him???

If i were a priest… well, things would be different… i would be like the one you mention… I have heard good homilies… They are all good… but some are just… Well, for example, i have gone to funeral Masses where no mention is made of Purgatory… it is even said or implied that the deceased is in Heaven… Of course, there are other things -rituals - in the Mass that show/indicate we are praying for the deceased… so any non-Catholics there would see that we definitely believe in Purgatory… but in any case, i’ve never heard Purgatory mentioned in a homily… Pretty pathetic considering most of us are on our way there… & even more so when considering that we might could be spared some suffering there if we were told how to do Purgatory here on Earth…

you mean because of it…

I was never taught, whn young, about how to offer up sufferings to get people out of Purgatory faster, to expiate past sins or to get people converted… This is one of the most wonderful teachins of the Church… When i did find it, it has helped me SO Much to deal with my sufferings… In fact, offering things up actually seems to relieve the suffering somewhat…

Why does the Catholic Chruch keep all its treasures to itself… (so it seems)… i can’t figure out what i wasn’t taught the things i know now… the things i had to look up for myself… and almost didn’t… :hypno:
