I like to keep informed on current events. I read the newspaper, but what is the best way to keep informed on Catholic current events so I can be an informed Catholic? Thank you very much.

I suggest getting a subscripton to the National Catholic Register, a weekly Catholic newspaper, which is $59 per year from

It has had its ups and downs over the last 30 that I have read it. Since its latest owners bought it several years ago, it has become very excellent. If you just want to check one issue, you can send for it for $1.95.

Yes I just started getting the National Catholic Register. It seems to be the best there is around for getting National news from a Catholic perspective. It could be improved, but it is the best I’ve found.
What is needed is a good national Catholic news magazine.

Radio Vaticana Podcasts
You can listen as MP3 audio to all English-language radio pieces the Vatican puts out as soon as they are made available, and a decent sized back-archive. There are MANY languages offered, too. Let me know if you are looking for Radio Vaticana programs in other languages.
There are three types: Individual items (which may be 45 second telephone cuts, even without the question–kind of like radio raw materials), Newscasts which may be a few minutes long, and include the ‘Vatican Radio’ reports heard on EWTN. You likely hear the small bits in the larger ones, too. Each evening they produce “The English Program of Vatican Radio” which is usually about 29 minutes, and produced daily for airing on Vatican Shortwave services and on 105Live FM in Rome.
There is a longer daily program called simply “The English Program of Vatican Radio” DO NOT MISS THIS PROGRAM. It is the latest information form the source. If you tend to burst into tears whenever you hear a radio program that loves the Church in her wholeness and starts and ends with the words “Laudato Jesu Christus” (‘all praise be to Jesus Christ’) don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Go to iTunes ( free download if you need it itunes.com )
• After you have iTunes installed,
• Copy this: feeds.feedburner.com/vatican-radio-clips-eng
• Then in iTunes near left top, click ‘Podcasts’
• Under ‘Advanced’ menu, pick “Subscribe to Podcast”
• Paste in what you copied
Now you can see descriptions of the individual programs and download them to your computer and iPod or similar MP3 player. You will get a mix of all the english radio items. It’s kind of like a radio wire service.
Note to geeks: The URL should work with any podcatcher client. Vatican Radio offers their own feeds but they aren’t compatible with iTunes for some reason, so I rigged this out through feedburner rather than bothering Vatican Radio about it. I figure they’re busy these days and I can be a pest about getting podcasts sorted out. Ask Jerry Usher or Darren deLozier.

Antother vote for the National Catholic Register. A word of caution however, the NCR or National Catholic REPORTER is a bit less than orthodox.
