swplan,
Here are more clarifications. I hope you are doing well.
Thanks Parker! Yep, Iāve been sick on and off and Iām trying to get some things done for work. You Ok?
swplan,
If by redeemed you meanā¦
What I mean by redeemed is rescued from the penalty of sin on some level. I guess more specifically Iām asking if LDS believe that only they and people who have accepted JS and the BOM will enter into some level of heaven. Another angle on the question would be, do LDS believe that Catholics and Protestants go to hell?
āSons of perdition?ā
āreceive a kingdom of glory?ā
From what I can tell from your writing, my life choices build up and I will build treasures in heaven. I know this idea exists in the Bible, but I donāt sense that we will be loaded up with literal crowns as such. Thereās an old hymn that I used to hear as a kid that goes like this, āIāve got a mansion just over the hilltop in that bright land where weāll never grow old and some day yonder, weāll nevermore wander, but walk the streets that are purest gold.ā The song goes on to talk about how much stuff we will have in Heaven. One day, as I thought about the words to this song, I was struck with how self-focused it is. Its not about the goodness of God, but about how we will get stuff in Heaven - how backward is that? It seems to me that our desire should not be for stuff or for our own preconceptions of Heaven, but just to be open and able to embrace whatever paradise is like - none of us can fathom perfection, so, it seems to me, that we need to wash all those cartoony ideas out of our heads and just trust that it will be better than anything we can imagine.
swplan,
'Many incorrect concepts there. Christ is the judge as to what kingdom each person will inherit and receive. The temple recommend, issued at the local level by a bishop and next-level leader (a member of a āstake presidencyā), is for attending the temple in this life, not saying what a personās status is in the next world.
āā¦as to what kingdom each person will inherit and receiveā¦ā this is another example of a extra-biblical idea.
swplan,
A person doesnāt ācome before a councilā or any such thing if they havenāt tithed, and they can miss one year and begin the next year and go back to the temple. Please remember that when Christ gave power to bind and loose on earth those things that would be ābound in heaven,ā He did it for several reasons one of which was to protect the members of the church and another was to help the person realize they had lost something very precious because of their deliberate sinful action. Then, the hope is they repent with āfull purpose of heartā and return to the fold, hopefully soon.
So youāre saying that Jesus gave us the power to bind and loose partly in order āā¦to help the person realize they had lost something very precious because of their deliberate sinful action.ā
Iām going to rephrase a little:
Youāre saying that God gave the church authority in order to put pressure on people to conform to the churchās way of doing things. Right?
Many people, in the name of Jesus, have attempted to pressure others into submission over the years.
Jesus emerged at a time when Rome was constantly pressuring the minority into submission. Israel was a nation that had spent many years under the pressure of a human authority that demanded submission. The whole reason Adam and Eve left the garden is that God did not demand submission from them. God gave them choice and when they went their own way, He let them be free. It seems that the LDS organization applies a certain amount of pressure upon its members and fairly serious consequences lay in the balance if people donāt comply with standards of conformity.
swplan,
If that is what you have lived for by your choices in life, but only within the limits of what you have understood so that you could make a valid choice.
swplan,
I need to clarify that in 1951 there was a more widespread plea for the members to stay living in their own country of origin, but many leaders previously had asked the members to do that at the local levels and as missionaries. I suppose the 1930ās is a good estimated time frame.
About that shift in approach, I was just saying that it was interesting how dramatically things changed from that point on. The movement was dwindling. There were less than 300 missionaries in the world at that time. When I saw this idea presented, it seemed to be suggesting that all converts were supposed to make a permanent move to Utah - Is this accurate, or was it simply a pilgrimage?
swplan,
That final paragraph is just someoneās opinion who had no idea what they were talking about as far as Iām concerned, other than the third (see Rev. 12:4) of pre-mortal spirits who rebelled in the pre-mortal life and were cast out of heaven along with Lucifer and were allowed to come to earth as evil spirits tempting humankind. Everyone who followed Christ (two thirds of the spirits), followed Christ decisively, though we have the veil over our memories in this life about that pre-mortal existence.
Yeah, I always have a hard time with Revelations. I think it is difficult to come to the conclusions that the LDS church has about that verse⦠It would be interesting to know where the information I presented came from. I have to admit that I have only seen that idea presented once. I have some anti LDS material that I havenāt listened to that, from its titles, makes me think it might present those ideas. Those things are from Walter Martin.
There are also some more examples of extra-biblical ideas in what youāve said above.
Must go⦠A/C off⦠Iām melting!

Thanks,
SW
