What is the cause of poor catechesis?

If my soul is better fed, yes! I can’t subsist on just the sacraments. Nothing takes the place of the word of God. Not the sacraments, adoration, the rosary, lives of the saints, Mass, nothing! Without a consistent diet of scripture study, I am bereft.

Perhaps you missed the entire first half of Mass— you know, the Liturgy of the Word?

Nothing stops you from studying Scripture in the Catholic Church. There are literally hundreds of studies you can do, individually or in a group. Video, book, workbook, bible commentary, novice to scholar level.

This has taken a bizarre turn and I can’t believe a serious Catholic would decide to leave the Church in one afternoon based on a few dozen random internet comments.

I am trapped between the three branches of Christianity. I almost feel like I must partake of all three to have a balanced faith.

Yes you must embrace and guard and consume the Holy Word! You must!

But you also must guard and protect the walls of that “temple” of the Word, Scripture, to which you must remain faithful. And you will find yourself under unholy pressure, outside of the Church, if you try to worship and fellowship with those who have rejected the fullness of divine revelation. You will be a heretic in the judgement of a denomination that has cast aside the fullness of divine truth, in exchange for something perhaps easier to “live with” for one reason or another.

By the way - I tried it out there. I am a “revert”. I returned having many “difficulties” - but no doubts. The one Church of our Lord Jesus Christ “subsists in” (as the Church teaches) the Catholic Church.

The Catechism:
816 “The sole Church of Christ which our Savior, after his Resurrection, entrusted to Peter’s pastoral care, commissioning him and the other apostles to extend and rule it… This Church, constituted and organized as a society in the present world, subsists in (subsistit in) the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with him.”<LG 8 # 2>

I’ve been struggling for a few years. Scripture and the catechism not being given equal weight in teaching the faith illustrates my point.

I don’t just want scripture in the Mass. I want it to be a priority in the Catholic Church. I don’t want my faith to be just a series of sacraments.

I no longer believe that either branch has the fullness of truth. They all lack something. Maybe this is why God allows division, so that the gifts are perfected?

Scripture is a priority. Everyone has made that pretty clear to you.

I’m a priest, who performs the sacraments daily. I have a degree in Sacred Scripture. And every one of the rites of the sacraments is loaded with scripture. I’m really not sure where you get this idea that scripture isn’t a priority in the Church. Everything we do is scriptural and is woven together with scripture.

You should take the advice others are giving you and study the faith more deeply. Check out The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn. Take a break from the forum and read and study and pray. You’re getting worked up over something that truly isn’t an issue.

You are in my prayers.

If you are considering risking your soul on a “maybe”… - I would not recommend it.

As a dear friend and advisor who helped me some years back once advised, “If you don’t know what you are doing, sit down.”

I have that book. Maybe God is leading me on a different path. A path that encompasses all three, not either/or.

How is my soul at risk when Jesus is my Lord and I acknowledge him as my Savior?

The Holy Spirit is not the author of confusion. There is one God, and there is one truth. There cannot be multiple truths. There is one Body of Christ. Christ is not divided.

Thanks everyone, my question was answered. It was not my intention to start a debate on the efficacy of Catholic Church teachings as it relates to salvation.

From Sensus Fidelium on youtube, in my opinion the best Catholic channel on there by far.

Catechetical Nightmares: Well worth the 45 minutes.

Why am I confused? I have felt uneasy in the Catholic Church for several years. I feel my faith walk is like a parched desert. Again, thanks.

You talk about what you feel. Feelings are important, but not the most important thing. Faith isn’t a feeling. Faith is our “yes” to God and his Church. I rarely feel much of anything about my faith. I just continue to say my yes. Faith is an act of the will in response to the grace of God, even if we feel confusion, even if we feel uneasiness. Faith means saying yes to God. You said yes when you joined the Church. Keep saying yes, keep deepening that commitment.

It’s not a feeling, like I want an emotional faith. It’s a feeling, a suspicion that what the Church emphasizes is creating distance between me and God.

I’m going to delete this thread. Peace to everyone. I am spiritually exhausted!
