My girlfriends and I were talking about our “go” signs for the breakups.

One said it’s the profanity used in the conversation (i.e. argument).

The other said when he is not willing to take time and listen to her.

I personally wouldn’t want my boyfriend to use “f-word” in the conversations even when we are upset. I don’t like the sound of it when it’s used with anger…because the person REALLY means it. If he refused to stop using them and doesn’t apologize later (when he is calm), then that might just be my “go” sign.

Let’s just say that your boyfriend/girlfriend is faithful in this senario. What would be your 'go" sign?

Oh before the profanity…

Physical violence is the definite “go” sign.

No question no exception.

If someone treats his family with disrespect, it is a go sign.

If he treats HER family with disrespect, it is a go sign.

If he treats people who work for him - including wait staff and clerks in stores as they are less than him, it is a go sigh,

And, of course, if he does not love God more than anything… GO.

I recommend you listen to “The 7 levels of Intimacy” by Matthew Kelly- the live presentation. www.matthewkelly.org or go to Lighthouse Catholic Media.

I truly wish that I was able to listen to that presentation when I was single. I have learned from experience that although it is valuable to know what you don’t want (your “go signs”), it is even more valuable and exclusive to know what you DO want in a relationship (your STAY SIGNS!!!).

My “go” signs did not serve me well in the absence of “stay” signs. Hope this makes sense to you singles out there.

Love4sure, I’m a guy and I share in all of your go signs.

I generally disassociate, at least emotionally, from people who refuse to hear you before making a judgement of you or a judgement of your actions. I am a lawyer, I believe in admitting all evidence and staying critical up until the very end, which may well bring a surprise. This is very important to me.

Profanity is not acceptable. This doesn’t mean an occasional bad word, but vulgar vocabulary is not what I look for in a lady. I expect a certain level of decorum, especially during social meetings. A date is a social meeting.

Physical violence? I’m hardly going to see it, but what it comes from is aggression and lack of self-control, both of which can be expressed in other ways and both of which are unacceptable when the line is crossed. It is correct that married couples sometimes quarrel and bad names fly. But a heated quarrel between people who love each other is not the same as someone being mean and cruel, probably not even as a result of ill will but rather some personality issues, which unfortunately are aplenty in this age.

Further “go” signs:
  • cheating
  • accepting sexual references from males (I primarily mean serious stuff that includes a reference to nudity or sexual acts, but I’d have a problem with any kind of it anyway)
  • seeking appreciation from other men too much - this includes flirtacious behaviour, parading around in rather scanty clothes etc; I’m basically too monogamous to like that
  • cruelty of any kind or form; tasteful sarcasm is typically not cruelty
  • dishonesty, especially lying
  • double-standards and lack of symmetry, trying to make decisions unilaterally
Regarding the last, I read a lot of chivalric legends as a kid, but I did my reading well. I know that apart from the princesses who thought they were a blessing just because they existed and were even somewhat comely, there were also those who actually cared and did something to show that. 😉 In my mid to late teens, I had a number of ladylike friends who knew how to. Not so at university, actually, but the early exposure did its job. 😉 There is a million of ways in which a woman can behave corresponding to what is expected of a gentleman. Ladylike standards of behaviour are no less *de rigueur *than gentlemanly ones and being a faint spectre that grudgingly recognises your presence and is offended by your being male and closer than 30 foot distance is not a part of them. Speaking of, there is a million of ladylike ways to show interest or friendship and there is nothing demeaning in following them.

Speaking of, another go sign is when a person believes courtesy demeans the person being courteous. Courtesy elevates both participants of the courteous discourse.

Another thing I tend to have issues with is when courtesy triggers narcisstic responses. I similarly don’t like when people take mildness as weakness. That’s a go sign.

just curious as an old lady light years removed from the dating scene, what is your “go” sign for beginning a dating relationship, as presumably it would only take one date to know if a person has a habit of profanity, constantly talks about himself and squelches other people, uses racial slurs, is disrespectful of women and so forth.

Some “go” signs not only from a dating relationship but from friendship from another an old(er) lady light years removed from the dating scene but who does enjoy going out for the occasional meal etc with friends.

When I am told I do not have the right to my opinions.

If you like/love me you would change your views, change what you do.

Do all the talking and/or try to detemine what we talk about all the time

Tell other people personal things we have talked about (can accept the first as a mistake, the second as an unfortunate lapse but not after that)

Have one standard for themselves and one for me ie I must always be on time but its okay for them to be late consistently. They can have their moans but I can’t

You must get a cellphone so I can always be in contact.

Back in college dating days, I was a bit like Seinfeld. For those who are not familiar, he was always so picky about every girl he dated (depicted in the show) and would break up with a girl if she looked different one day, or ate her spaghetti in a bizarre way. lol
I admit, I was a bit like that, when I dated guys.

If I were single now, say never married–I would certainly not be that picky. But, I would say the go signs for me would be:
  1. if someone kept me from practicing my faith, or seemed jealous over it
  2. over jealous men
  3. abusive…one time occurence…I’d be out
  4. cheating…I think that if someone you are dating is not able to remain faithful before marriage, marriage won’t change things.
  5. repetitively angry or negative
  6. if the man was not Catholic, and had no intentions of even exploring the faith
If I were dating, those would be my ‘go’ signs.🙂

Gosh, if my dear wife applied all the ‘go’ signs that folks put out we would never have gotten together. I was considered rude, used pretty bad language when provoked, wasn’t very attentive or particularly romantic and had a fairly short temper.

I don’t think I would have recommended myself to anyone eitehr, but I mellowed and changed a bit over the years.

The dear wife has a few faults of her own. But lets consider the’ stay’ signs before we write everybody off. IF you have a kind loving heart and are will to make changes or improvements in your life to accomodate your spouse, I think that offsets a lot faults. IF someone really loves you, they should always be willing to make improvements to make things work. I used to cuss like a sailor, but I rarely do now. There are still a few slip ups but nothing like before.

Some things of course would be unacceptable or difficult if not impossible to overlook. Infidelity, criminal behavior, cruelty or mean spirited would be hard to change or overlook.

I was just thinking the same thing. We live in a disposable society already.I am in no way worthy of my fiancee, but she thinks I am.I will serve her till i die.
For a teenager, on the other hand, this thread seems totally appropriate. The qualities they seek to avoid in a potential spouse should be what they are willing to live with for the rest of their lives.Violence, vulgarity, slothfulness, and all sorts of things should be considered. For myself.I have found the coolest chick this side of heaven. And I’m sticking with her.

True.
IF someone really loves you, they should always be willing to make improvements to make things work.
True. Actually, one of not so much “go” as “think” signs is unwillingness to make adjustments. However, some people who are unwilling, unwillingly do make those adjustments regardless.

Yup.
