Protected how, Tweety?

You have said that you are not infallible; thus, it is entirely possible for you to be completely wrong about your interpretation of a scripture passage or your understanding of a doctrine of the Church.

(Me, too, btw.)

You’re claiming to be protected by the Holy Spirit, but you also admit that you are not infallible. Consequently, the Holy Spirit is NOT preventing you from falling into error, is He?

So, while you disagree, you don’t seem to have a basis for your disagreement with my original statement.

Yes, there is.

Charity prevents me from saying more. 😉
As does charity keep me from saying anymore to you.

confused about the hostility between Randy and Tweetymom when both list themselves as Catholic . . . . if I’m confused, how many the more non-Catholics looking for answers here?

Welcome to Catholic Answers.

I would have corresponded with you privately about this matter, but you are not accepting PM’s. I feel your post deserves a response.

As you probably know from your own experience, not everyone who calls themself a Catholic adheres faithfully to the actual teachings of the Church.

Those who do find themselves in the awkward position of having to “un-explain” false ideas given to the non-Catholic visitors who do need to hear accurate information about our faith.

When this occurs, or when one Catholic questions another about their…um…“creative theology”, :o things can get a little testy. And since some of us bump into one another again and again in this forum, patience and charity have often been spent long ago.

Hope this helps. :tiphat:

What really puzzles me about your posts is how you can post what you do and end it with peace be with you.
That is because you operate on emotion and not on logic. Not a recipe for success in an apologetics forum…

Peace be with you!

…but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect… 1 Peter 3:15
What puzzles me about you is how you can quote a verse like this in an attempt to rebuke me when it is you who has avoided “being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you…”. I assume it is because your tendency to focus on the emotional aspects of what you read led you to subconsciously ignore that portion of the text in favor of “do it with gentleness and respect”. The verse says quite a bit more than “do it with gentleness and respect”, but you apparently have glossed over that. Unless, that is, you think you have actually demonstrated a preparedness to defend your Gospel-based hope. If need be, I can recall for you the simple, direct questions that I presented to you, along with the original posts which I presented to you, along with your failure to address the questions because “the context keeps changing”. Sometimes the truth doesnt make you feel good, but it remains the truth: you never defended your hope - you avoided it and attempted to blame for it.
I harbor no ill will toward you and certainly dont wish to argue with you simply to argue. I thought we were going to explore what the Gospel is. That requires dialogue and careful communication - perhaps you are not ready for that. Regardless, I trust that you are following God’s call in your life and do not judge your current path. Forgive me if I have offended you.

Peace be with you!

Why would you say that your personal interpertation of Romans 2:6-11 is correct since it has not been dogmatically defined by the Magestrium for you?
Because it is consistent with what has been revealed.
I believe you took it out of proper context from the gospel revealed in the Epsitles of Romans. I believe it is an incorrect conclusion, considering Romans chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4… and actually the rest of Romans… and the rest of Scripture… and the gospel of God’s grace. 😉
Yeah, but ultimately what you think is irrelevant with respect to the question of who’s interpretation is correct. Unless you have some level of authority which Randy doesnt have. Do you? Dont get emotional - this is simply a statement of fact: your interpretation carries no more validity than anyone elses.
It is this kind of view which leads many Protestants to think that Catholic Christians are trying to earn their salvation by their personal good works. By your posting, it appears you are preaching a gospel of works, and not of grace.
It remains clear that you have much to learn with regards to Catholic theology. Are you interested in actually learning or are you here simply to judge?

Peace be with you!

thanks for the clarification. I appreciate you taking the time to explain.

I have to disagree. My beliefs are grounded in the promises of God as they are revealed in the Word of God.

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. - Apostle Peter

Illuminate is similar to interpert or understand. I mean corporately as in visible church. No, individuals and corporately should be the same, unless corporately the visible church drifts away from the truth, then we have to obey God and not man at that point.
How, exactly, would you know when this happened?

2 timothy 3:16 gives an answer to your question…

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
Right. All Scripture. Not just two verses of it. The Gospel is the entire 73 Books of the Bible, plus the living Tradition that illuminates its meaning to us. 🙂

I think the Catholic Catechism would not call Sacred Tradition to be Scripture.

SIDEBAR DISCUSSION

In your opinion, what book would you recommend to someone interested in learning about the Catholic understanding of salvation or “the Gospel”?
This is the Faith, by Canon Francis Ripley, alongside The Compendium of the Catechism, by Pope Benedict XVI. Both are written for lay people, in plain language, and they cover every essential doctrine of the Church. 🙂

As a method of study, what I would do is choose a subject of interest (let’s say, Marian Dogma), find the relevant paragraphs in the Compendium to read by way of introduction to the subject (use the index at the back to find topics), and then read the chapters on Mary that are found in This is the Faith, for a fuller exposition in plain language of the same concepts.

Once you’ve done that, you can look up various hymns about Mary in the back of the Compendium, to round out your education. 👍

If by the simple act of reading Scripture, the pastor of a Church is infallibly led by the Holy Spirit into all truth, then it is physically impossible for him to “drift away from the truth” - right? Because, having received the Holy Spirit at his baptism, he is being led by the Holy Spirit when he reads the Bible, right?

The only way he could “drift away from the truth” is if he has free will to interpret the Scriptures in some other way than how God intended them to be interpreted - but you have said that, if he has the Holy Spirit (which he has, because he received the Holy Spirit in his baptism) he cannot be led astray when he reads the Scriptures.
