What is the point of worshipping God?

My understanding of that is similar to the placebo effect, you believe a certain thing to be true and you worked at it, the main point is, you worked to get where you are today. It’s not the religion or God that helped you, but you did it for yourself, why there are people that become muslims and also experience the same thing you do, or perhaps hindu, or perhaps a monk from a distant tribe in some faraway place on the mountain top.

So who’s religion is right in that case, yours or theirs? The answer is in your own words " had to grow up fast, i will always be inspired to go one better" - whatever the inspiration for people is, it’s they themselves that actually do it.
First of all I believe its all one God, certain religions have different names for our God. If you look at Judism, Christianity and Muslim, we all strive for the same things basically to worship in Faith our God and follow his laws as commanded to us… I feel if you follow the basic principals of the bible , Torah, koran etc. its all the same guidelines or principals for us to apply who love and worship God.

We have free will its us who choose to believe or not, and when we do then God and or the Holy spirit guides us. So its up to us to choose and God to help us along our journey.

What would be our meaning and purpose for being here if we did not have to answer to our God when we pass on to the supernatural realm or the other side.

Great argument,
You didn’t ask for an argument. You asked for a reason, and that’s what you got.
claim the Bible as their main authority, and if I ask how do we know it’s correct, they will either cite faith, or because the Bible says so
You are making an argument “for” someone else then shooting it down. That’s called a “straw man,” because there is no substance to it but straw. If you don’t think the Bible accurately portrays what God commands of us, the onus is on you to prove that claim, not on someone else to falsify it for you. So… what is your evidence it is false?
It’s not my fault that examples of holiness and prayer seem to indicate that certain people do indeed get what they want, …especially in recent times such as Padre Pio who was claimed to have done extraordinary things for others, by their request, so I strongly suggest you make sure you know what you’re talking about.
I do know what I’m talking about. What Padre Pio and those God performed miraculous things for through him had was FAITH. I emphasized this in my previous post. God grants these miracles so that others - who do not have faith - might believe. Jesus even says that; John 11:15 and 40.
What evidence can you grant me for this eternal happiness and heaven? No, the Bible isn’t evidence, I can’t walk into the Royal Institute of Physics and claim extraodinary things without evidence.
This is an argument from a Scientism perspective; that is, we can only know something is true if we can submit it to the tests of the scientific method. But that is baloney; the very claim that we can ONLY know truth via the scientific method is self-refuting, because you cannot verify or falsify that claim using the scientific method.

Can you read a fictional novel, say, a Tom Clancy novel, and learn some truth about submarines or sonar? Yet Clancy’s story is not real. Can you define what beauty is using the scientific method? I’m sure someone in your life loves you; can you prove that via the scientific method? Science is not the ONLY way we can come to truth. Philosophers use logic and reason to discover truth, in fact they used it to discover the scientific method, so it’s ironic that “science” sees no value in discovering any truth via that method.

Arguments for God from reason abound. You exist, I assume. So IF you exist, there are only two possible ways you got here: either there is an uninterupted reproductive chain extending back infinitely, or somewhere along the line a Being who did not Himself need to “be created” created the beginning of the reproductive process. St. Thomas Aquinas called this the argument from first cause. It’s not the only argument, just one of many.
Before I accept the Bible as proof of anything, I need other kinds of proof, of course none of which you are able to provide. …learn your debating skills.
Then why ask? I just gave you one above. But you are narrowing your search by defining the only evidence you will accept in such a way you make it impossible to give you what you ask. You are like a man who doesn’t believe glass exists and demands someone prove it to him without using glass as evidence. Sorry, if you’re going to paint yourself into a corner like that, you might as well not ask the question.

The method of debate I learned in school was one where you presented an argument then backed up your claim with evidence. You are making a sweeping dismissal of religious faiths without a shred of evidence to support your own claim, and demanding someone else prove a negative for you. That’s not debate.
Code:
Then why should I bother praying If I can do the legwork regardless of prayer,
Well as I told you in the last post prayer is not JUST FOR getting something, it’s for building a relationship with God where that “something” is in harmony with it. What happens to you when your life on Earth comes to an end? Nothing? Something? If you say nothing, then cite me your evidence for this claim. That’s how debate works, so let’s hear your evidence.
I don’t want deductive reasoning… you might want to brush up on some basic philosophy if you have trouble coming to grips with scientific arguments.
Is your purpose to inquire or to insult? You tell me to “brush up” on something you will not even consider. Why? I’m wondering if you apply this same standard to science? Do you disbelieve astronomy when they deductively reason a planet too dim to see visually is orbiting a distant star based solely on the periodic wobble of that star? Half of the Big Bang theory works on deductive reasoning, otherwise there is no point in searching for dark matter. Nothing except deductive reasoning tells us it exists.
This coming from the same person who bungled two different types of reasoning above when it came to the proof of gravity and the proof of God?
You know, I’m a bit irritated with your criticism, your idea of “bungling.” I cited gravity as an example to show that truth exists whether one chooses to believe in it or not. It can certainly be proven, but if I, despite ALL evidence you show me, reject it, it does not change the truth of gravity. Likewise, a person who chooses to disbelieve in God does not alter His existence. That is all I was trying to say. I nowhere said God can be proven LIKE gravity.

It’s really pointless to present any argument to you, even limited as they are by this format. You seem to want anxiously to reject everything presented because it can’t be put under a microscope. Well, not everything in reality can be, as illustrated by beauty and love, yet they exist. So unless you have a specific question or want to present some evidence that we can only know something via science, I’m content to leave the topic alone.

Argument here will clearly do no good. Debate with many merely hardens a person’s position, and that very much appears to be the case here.

Your arguments are reminiscent of my own, just a few years ago, when I vaguely believed in God but denounced Christ and Christianity. I had spent several years debating (and debunking, I thought) Christianity, on a different online forum. But I decided to lessen my hostility to Catholicism because I figured it would be good for my marriage–my wife was Catholic, and my refusal to attend mass and let our future children attend mass was driving us apart. After I lessened my hostility, let down my guard, and opened my mind, I converted anew to Catholicism (and Christianity) as I never believed possible. I now see it as the greatest decision I have ever made.

I’m afraid this story is the only thing I can offer you. Faith cannot be forced when the mind is set against it. As I have said before, the best reasons to believe can only be grasped after one believes.

The OP actually brought a couple of questions to my mind, related to the question in the first sentence, about what purpose it serves to worship God:

Are we supposed to “worship” God?
Does God want us or expect us to worship Him? Why?
What does God expect from us? What would please Him the most?

When I look through the NT, particularly the Gospels, I see little reference to worshipping God. The only one I could easily find is in the 4th Chapter of John, where Jesus talks about a “better way” to worship God and tells the woman at the well: “the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.”

Jesus seems to be talking here about a particular kind of worship, based on the Holy Spirit and grounded in the truth that He has revealed to us. It is not a worship based on the fear of retribution and punishment. Note also the Beatitudes, with a list of those who are blessed or favored by God; not one word about worship in them.

What I also find in the NT are many references to the first two Commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength; and to love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12).

And the above passage comes straight from Deuteronomy 6: “*Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.” * In the Gospels, Jesus is reiterating and emphasizing the importance of this commandment.

When the Scribe said to Jesus that to love God and neighbor was “worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices”, Jesus responded that the Scribe was “not far from the kingdom of God”.

So true worship of God seems not to be found in sacrificial offerings and cowering fear of the Almighty, but in an enlightened and mature relationship with God. Based on what Jesus tells us, God expects us to have faith in his Word rather than fear of Him; true internal love for our neighbor rather than external vanity in our own righteousness.

I submit that for many Christians the emphasis on “worshipping God” is misplaced and not wanted by God. I think God wants us to internalize and live out those Beatitudes and those first two Commandments as deeply and completely as we can. THAT would please God more than anything else we can do or say, and is really the highest form of worship.

So by your logic all your failures were also caused by your own doing - yet you’re happy enough to blame them on religion rather than on yourself, shown by the fact that you point to them (and to your relatively more ‘successful’ areligious life afterwards) as proof that religion is false. 🤷

And you’re entirely missing the point - without God I WOULDN’T have worked - without Him I WASN’T working, most of the time. I only worked because of Him. So to say He didn’t help me is nonsense.

TheRiver, Can I ask you if you believe that love exists? Do you love anyone? How would you go about proving that this love you experience actually exists? This person that you love, would you estimate that he or she loves you back? Why? Would you expect that they might? How can they prove to you that they do indeed love you?

Actions would not indicate the existence of love since any act of love could be mistaken for merely a kind gesture or a means for self-fulfillment. Can you give me tangible evidence that love exists? And if you can, would you tell me why someone really should love someone back?..teachccd

That doesn’t quite work as an explanation for God, particularly when you consider all the advasarial historical recordings of the resurection. Roman Pegans as well as the Pharasis also wrote historical accounts of Jesus’s resurection. There is a strong case to be made (very strong) that the resurection is historical fact, hence I beleive it. If the resurection is historical fact, then it is all true.

I like the question teachccd asked, so if you could respond to his question that would be good. Do you believe love exists?

Please cite this? I’m genuinely curious to read these citings.
thanks.

I think there is a point in worshipping God. On the secular side, worship brings people together, with a common veiw and aim. It gives comfort to many. On the religious side, in the bible, God instructs us to worhsip, and tells us how to worship. Maybe some people don’t get anything out of it, but from a purely religious/biblical perspective, it’s a good thing.

The River…

It sounds like perhaps you’ve been deeply hurt by something or someone in your life…
I can’t help but think you’re not as convinced as you’re trying to make us believe.
Almost everyone else here has ‘covered’ everything I’m thinking in reference to your comments…but just let me add this food for thought. What if…just what IF there really is a God (which I already know, but for the sake of your argument against Him) and there really is eternal hell…the hell which is described in the Bible where there’s gnashing and gnarling of teeth and the wails of cries don’t ever stop and you can’t ever get away from it??
And it’s F O R E V E R…E T E R N A L…you can’t get out…there’s no going back! Geez, I just think that’s a horrible thought! BUT…And picture this—HEAVEN is also ETERNAL . God, Jesus, the Saints, goodness, mercy, love for all eternity. I’ll take Heaven over hell any day, River!!..Just in case it’s real, is it worth the chance you’re taking right now not to give it the benefit of the doubt?? As many have mentioned here, this is a matter, in part, of having the faith to believe…I’ve struggled many times over the years and had many questions about “religeon”. But eventhough I got mad at God a couple of times and I didn’t understand exactly why things happened to me or someone I loved or knew, I never really questioned His existance. Why?? Because I also know for sure that God is the only One who have saved me soooo many times. He’s who got me through some of the toughest times in my life. Interesting that it’s been said that a devout atheist will most times cry out to God on his death bed. Why? I think it’s because deep in the “unbeliever’s” heart they know they didn’t just get here by chance and they know God is the only answer for eternal peace. And just in case it applies, River…God is quick to forgive any sin as long as we are truly sorry and ask His forgiveness, so I pray you’re not being cynical against Him because you think it’s too late for you…again, not assuming, just mentioning it as an after thought.
I’m NOT perfect, but I’ll keep you in my prayers, River. I’m on the backside of my 50s and I have just recently found so much peace in the Catholic Church. I’m looking forward to this journey. God bless you.

So, the reason you believe in God is because of fear of hell? Hell is not a good enough reason to believe…And how do you know hell exist? The same reason that god exist…because someone told you that it does. It’s a scare tactic to increase numbers and keep folks in line. There is no proof.

I’m guessing it’s more, he beleives in hell because he believes in God.

Here is a brief analysis of the historical accuracy of the NT.

“Historical accuarcy of the NT”? I thought I was going to get proof of the resurrection…but okay…let’s have a look at the two links anyway:

From the Xenos.org page, the piece that we want to look at (and what you really referred to in your post) is evidence outside of the bible for the resurrection, since you can’t prove the bible with the bible…We need to draw from contemporary historians to be able to claim any sort of validity.

The author mentions only two contemporary historians. Tacticus and Josephus, and a roman governor. Tacticus refers to the resurrection as “superstition”…just because he mentioned the superstition can’t make it a fact that happened at all.
The Governor wrote concerning people calling themselves Christians, and not about the resurrection at all.
Then we get to Josephus…well what can I say that’s not already been said…to Christians he’s the smoking gun that shows that the bible is all true…to everyone else he has been debunked a thousand times over.
Josephus was renowned to go into very intense details about people….he wrote many many volumes of books, sometimes dwelling on inconsequential characters for volumes….yet on christ he spent just one paragraph….if christ was that important to history, why didn’t josephus write more?

And of course the famous paragraph shows nothing of the resurrection of Christ, so it is a moot point for your claim as above.
Let’s look at confirmed contemporary historians in the time of Christ:

Josephus; Philo-Judaeus; Seneca; Pliny the Elder; Suetonius; Juvenal; Martial; Persius; Plutarch; Justus of Tiberius; Apollonius; Pliny the Younger; Tacitus; Quintilian; Lucanus; Epictetus; Silius Italicus; Statius; Ptolemy; Hermogones; Valerius Maximus; Arrian; Petronius; Dion Pruseus; Paterculus; Appian; Theon of Smyrna; Phlegon; Pompon Mela;
Quintius Curtius; Lucian; Pausanias; Valerius Flaccus; Florus Lucius; Favorinus; Phaedrus; Damis; Aulus Gellius; Columella; Dio Chrysostom; Lysias and Appion of Alexandria.

Enough of the writings of the authors named in the foregoing list remains to form a library. Yet in this mass of Jewish and Pagan literature, aside the above, there is to be found no mention of Jesus Christ, let alone his resurrection. Hmmm…curiousser and curiousser (To quote Alice)

So, really, your evidence for the resurrection that you were so confident about is non-existent and called a superstition (which it was it was) the one time it’s mentioned.
The rest of the article goes on about using these passages to prove historical accuracy of the bible and then defers to the bible for the evidence for the resurrection.

Sorry not going to fly.

Then…from Leaderu.com…already in the opening paragraphs they are making serious assumptions:
The writers of the four Gospels either had themselves been witnesses or else were relating the accounts of eyewitnesses of the actual events…
The first part is speculation….there were no eye witnesses writing the bible, it’s all from hearsay. Someone told the author what happened to write down, so I Mark’s case we have second hand knowledge, and in Matthew and Luke’s cases its third-hand, since they were largely based on Mark. (Again agreed by most biblical scholars)
Let’s look at Mark, the earliest gospel.
Most scholars agree that the gospel of Mark was composed between 65-80 CE. The church father Eusebius (late 3rd century CE) is the earliest surviving record in regards to the claim that the Gospel of Mark was written by Mark, a Greek translator and follower of Peter. He quotes from Papias who lived in the early 1st century BCE who said that the book was written after Peter had died and that Mark “wrote down accurately whatsoever he remembered”. It was not, however, in exact order that he related the sayings or deeds of Christ. For he neither heard the Lord nor accompanied Him.” Thus Eusebius himself quotes that Papias stated that this Mark had never met or seen Jesus himself, i.e. he was not eye witness.

The rest of the whole article is based on points found in the bible…again, not going to fly.

I would agree with your first point, about the communal benefits of worship, and also about the individual benefits of prayer, a form of worship. But I wonder: Does God really instruct us to worship? If so, how? When? In what form and in what manner?

As I consider the Gospels, I can recall two places where Jesus talks about worship: One is in John when he meets the woman at the well; the other is when He is tempted by the Devil, in the Gospel of Matthew. But in both passages he is responding specifically to someone, and what He says is not directed to His disciples. Is there any other place in the Gospels where Jesus specifically teaches the disciples (and us) about worship? Or even directing us to worship God?

Again, I am wondering what Jesus said about it, not what Paul or other authors of the various epistles wrote.

Is how most Christians worship God today really based on what Jesus taught the disciples, on something He stated that He expects us to do? Or is it something that developed over time, and is possibly based on earlier Jewish traditions and practices, and perhaps even pagan practices, adapted by the early Church?

As I said in my earlier post on this thread, I wonder if we are missing the point of what God expects from us.

Crazzeto said it perfectly…I believe in hell BECAUSE I believe in God. As for proof, there’s writings that go back to biblical times…And that’s also where faith comes in. There were also non-believers as apparently you are (since your info states that you are a super atheist). I, alone cannot or will not try to infringe my beliefs on the approximate 14% of you who choose to “fight” the Bible and God. The decision to follow Christ is a choice we all have. AND to comment on your remark about me just being afraid of hell…I BELIEVE in GOD THE FATHER, SON and HOLY GHOST! I am a child of God (just as you are…do you really think you and rest of all life forms started as an amebae??) AND I take His words and teachings very seriously! There’s NO way I’m going to dishonor Him and myself by denying His existance while chalking it all up to some scientific gobblety goosh that even the best scientists can’t quite put their fingers on yet. They can clone an animal, but they still can’t figure out how to make a soul!! Doesn’t that tell you something??? It speaks volumes to me.
Anyhow, I’ve had plenty of struggles and hard times in my life. I feel sometimes like I’ve had a little taste of hell here on earth…Why would I, or anyone want to spend eternity somewhere that’s a trillion times worse than anything we can imagine here? Again, I ask YOU to think about the validity of all this “scare tactic” stuff as you call it. It’s a no-brainer,

Revelation 22:18-19 I myself give witness to all who hear the prophetic words of this book. (The Bible) If anyone adds to these words, God will visit him with all the plagues described herein! If anyone takes from the words of this prophetic book, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city described here!

Okay, dude, simmer down…your remark initially stated this:

It was stated in such a way that you believed in god out of fear of hell…a simple explaination like Crazzeto gave would have sufficed…
Did I strike a nerve then? I guess I did…it wasn’t the intent, just wanted a clarification and elaborated on it, saying that if that was teh case, it wouldn’t be a very good reason. That’s all!
sheesh…

=TheRiver=If one were to believe God existed, what purpose would it serve to worship him? I don’t see the need to go to church, or pray, or put hope in anything related to religion, people live life fine without God, and certainly many people have different Gods and they seem to live life fine too. One does not need to be Christian to be moral, in fact many Buddhists and Hindus have very similar ideologies in certain sects regarding abortion, contraception, violence etc.
The reason other faiths hold these similar views is further evidence of God, writing the basic moral truths on “our hearts” and this in our even unformed correctly conscience.😉

We Praise, Glorify and give “latria” Worship to God becasue that is the precise reason for which we were Created, by God and like God, [Gen. 1:26-27], but imperfectly. [Eph. 1:12. Isiah 43: 7, 21] It is the greatest GOOD that humanity is capable of.

I used to live a pretty ****** life when I used to be religious, it was more in the fact that whatever I hoped or prayed for never really came true, people might say God works in mysterious ways bla bla, but when I stopped going to church, stopped praying, that’s when I started to do things the way I saw fit, instead of thinking what would God do, or praying about it, and I got what I wanted, I got results, I’m no longer worrying as much, I still feel sad, unhappy, etc. at times like everyone else does, but I feel different, more in control of my own life.
Friend have you ever heard of the “narrow gate?” Heaven and Hell are Eternal, and we get to decide which one we are going to chose. :hmmm::tsktsk: You may wish to recondier your choice. But, hey, that’s up to you. You can play now and pay later.
And no I’m not worried about hell, so I won’t be praying and being religious just in case I die and hey…hell pops up.
Isn’t God Great, He’ll let you ‘Do it my way" just like ol’ FS.
The worst reasoning in the world is where people say believe in Jesus and pray for it, and nothing will be impossible for you, and quoting some random segment of the Bible, then someone comes here and cries about how it all didn’t happen to them, and the responses are don’t worry God has a better plan for you, go figure
With your attitude friend, why are you involved with CAF? Because yor so darn happy that you want to share the good news?

I
* do agree that there exist a great deal of misunderstanding regards prayer.**

God answered all prayer BUT not as you want, rather with what God know’s is for His Greater Glory and your spiritual good.

All prayer should end with "but not my will Lord, but thy will be done! And MEAN IT!👍

Prayers are answered in God’s time frame, not ours. And in a manner that God knows is best for us, including at times saying NO!*

Well friend, I sure hope yor burning the candle of life on both ends cause this life in very finite and the next… FOREVER!

Love and prayers friend, even though you know that you don’t need them:shrug:

Worshiping and praising your creator defines the correct attitude required to life your life well.
Those who hate their life will of course curse him, and those who are merely indifferent will do neither.

But for those who are actually grateful to be alive, then worship and praise come as naturally as thanking your dad for giving you the keys to a Mercedes.

It is a happiness kind of thing.

And how much more awesome is a human life than a simple Mercedes. Creating life merits something more than a Yo, Pops!!👍 sort of response.

So, just to get this straight…Are you implying that Atheists are all unhappy people and Agnostics are indifferent people and chirstians are happy people?

It seems to be an awful generalization and one that’s completely inaccurate. There was a thread on this not too long ago and there the common consensus were, rightly so, that happiness is not related to your religious preference (Or lack thereof).
I know many atheists (myself included) that are very happy with tieir lives right now and on a continual basis.

Just to clarify your point a bit 🙂
