What is the Scriptural Basis for Islam's Belief in Jesus as the Messiah?

In other words, why does Islam believe that Jesus is the Messiah? And why does it NOT believe He is the Son of G-d? Surely Islam does not follow the Jewish interpretation of the Hebrew Bible since this interpretation, according to the Masoretic text at least, claims Jesus did not fulfill any of the prophecies that the Messiah was to fulfill. On the other hand, Judaism does not believe in a Divine Messiah but only in a Human Messiah. Does Islam also believe this? I’m aware Islam does not equate Jesus with G-d, but I was wondering whether Jesus is thought to have certain extra-human or divine characteristics, similar to those of angels. In addition, does Islam incorporate any of the teachings of the Gospel with respect to Jesus: evidently not His being the Son of G-d, but perhaps His Messiahship? Further, I think Muhammad is considered the Seal of the Prophets according to the Qur’an. Is Jesus regarded as a lesser Prophet even at the time of His Second Coming when He is supposed to proclaim the Truth of Islam? And what else is Jesus supposed to do at that time? Finally, where does the idea of the anti-Christ–whom the Jews are prophesied to accept as the Messiah according to Islamic teaching–come from in Islam?

These are a lot of questions regarding Jesus based on the Islamic perspective. No one has to, or perhaps can, answer all of them, so take your pick! I’m interested in a knowledgeable Muslim response, but all religious scholars and non-scholars are welcome to reply.
The scriptural basis is scripture.

Jesus is not the Messiah to Muslims as we understand the Messiah is the Son of the Living God.

To them, Jesus is nothing more than a great prophet - and not even the greatest as Muhammad is the greatest prophet in their view.

To Muslims, Jesus is a promised prophet born of a virgin, What I am trying to explain is they don’t view Jesus as the “Messiah” the way Christian view “Messiah”.

You’re probably correct. I suppose Muslims don’t see the Messiah as a Savior or Redeemer for the sins of humanity, and neither do Jews view the Messiah as such. Yet I don’t believe Muslims and Jews view the Messiah in the same way either. So what then is the role of the Messiah according to Islam?

wow you are the first one I’ve heard of (except me!) to see the similarity of Mormanism and Islam. They are both written by “restorationalists”, using old religious books as their foundation, and then adding new material. Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith had quite the imaginations!
And here I thought I was the only one who noticed the similarity. But I’m glad to have an ally. Of course, it’s like comparing apples and oranges with respect to the different theologies of Mormonism and Islam. Still, there seems to be a link regarding the notion that former scriptures are corrupted and do not contain the whole truth.

Please someone show me in writting where Islam considers Jesus to be the Messiah…somebody show me where Islam believes in the Jewish messiah… period.
Islam is the dream of an epileptic child molester who hated Jews and Christians and as such it will not square with either religion. The idea that islam teaches that Jesus was what He actually is… is ludicrous and false. 🤷

The are a number of verses in the Qur’an which leaves no doubt that the Bible has indeed been corrupted and one such example is:

That they said (in boast), “We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.;- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not.[Qur’an 4:157]

This verse clearly exposes the falsehood entered by the scribes that Jesus Christ (pbuh) was crucified by stating in clear terms that Jesus was not crucified.

The Qur’an also says that those who claim that Jesus was crucified do not have knowledge and only follow mere assumptions. Who then is saying that Jesus was crucified? The Bible suggests so and Christians follow and believe it. Thus the Qur’an is actually exposing the corruption of the Bible.

Since there is no Christian or Jew in the world who can answer the question of who was it that wrote the Bible, then the onus is really on Christians and Jews to prove that the Bible that we have today has not been corrupted by unknown hands through the ages.
So Islam doesn’t believe Jesus was crucified? This is really interesting. There was a book written by a Jewish author c. 1970 called “The Passover Plot” that states Jesus contrived His own death. It sounds pretty unbelievable to me and similar to those who claim Jesus didn’t even exist. The vast majority of Jews do believe Jesus existed and that He was crucified. For a variety of reasons, they just don’t believe Him to be the Messiah. BTW, in what sense do Muslims believe Jesus is the Messiah? IOW, what kind of Messiah is He according to Islam, with regard to what He was supposed to accomplish in His lifetime and during His Second Coming, which I think Muslims also believe? I read that when Jesus returns, He will reveal the truth of Islam and everyone will convert. What else is He supposed to do at that time?

That would make Jesus the greatest con artist that ever lived when you consider what a change He has made in the world and all the buildings with crosses on it that think He did die.

Where does Islam’s perspective concerning the inaccuracy and corruption of the Hebrew Bible (particularly the Torah) and the Gospels come from? Is it stated by Muhammad and others in the Qur’an or perhaps in the ahadith? And, if so stated, what is the basis of this belief: prophetic revelation, historical evidence, or some other factor?

as for answering your question about massaih according to islam or according arabic meaning for the word massiah

in islam Jesus Christ is called Al-Masseeh المسيح which means** the-wiper or the-Rubber **as he used to wipe on the eye of the blind to recover their eyesight and also used to wipe on those infected with leprosy to cure them. ( we believe that it was one of his miracles )

Muslims do believe that Isa (A.S.) was sent down as a Prophet of Allah (God), but he (Jesus) is not God , nor the son of God. Muslims do not believe that Isa (A.S.), also known as Jesus by Christians and others, is dead or was ever crucified. We believe that he was raised to heaven and is there, and will descend at the appointed time, end all wars, and bring peace to the world.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) has prophesied about several events that will occur just before the advent of the day of judgment. Among these, Muhammad(pbuh) has foretold the return of Jesus(pbuh), which will materialize when a one eyed claimant to divinity (Antichrist) will attempt to misguide the humanity into worshipping him. Messiah will descend from the heavens in Damascus, pray behind Imam Mahdi, pursue and kill the Antichrist, destroy the savage and unbelieving armies of Gog and Magog, and bring peace and brotherhood to the world. Christians will recognize the truth and accept him only as a Messenger of God; the religion of God (Islam) will justly rule the world.

There will be no oppression and no need to fight oppressors (war will be abolished) and no need to collect Jizyah (since there will be no non-Muslim people of the Book to collect this tax from). Every human being will be well-off and no one will accept charity. Messiah will perform Hajj (pilgrimage), marry, remain married for 19 years, beget children, and die after living on earth for 40 years. His death will signal the beginning of the last days

mohammed (pbuh) said
“There is no prophet between me and him (i.e. Jesus Christ), and he shall descend. So, recognize him when you see him. He is a man of medium height, of ruddy and fair complexion; he will be dressed in two yellow garments; the hair of his head will appear as though water was going to trickle down from it, whereas it will not be wet. He will fight people in the cause of Islam, will break the Cross and kill the swine and will abolish jizyah; and Allah will put an end to all communities in his time except Islam; and he will slay the Antichrist (Dajjal); and he will stay in the world for 40 years; then will die and the Muslims will offer the funeral Prayer for him.” (Abu Da’ud and Ahmad).

in another hadeeth
Exactly at the time when the Imam of the Muslims will have stepped forward to lead them in the Morning Prayer, Jesus son of Mary shall descend upon them. The Imam will step back so that Jesus may step forward (to lead the Prayer), but Jesus, placing his hand between his two shoulders, will say, “No, you should lead, for the congregation has assembled to follow you. So, the Imam will lead the Prayer. After the salutation, Jesus will say, “Open the gate;” so the gate will be opened. Outside there will be the Dajjal along with 70,000 of the armed Jews. As soon as he will look at Jesus (upon whom be peace) he will start melting like the salt in water, and will flee. Jesus will say, “I shall strike you a blow which will not let you live.” And he will overtake him at the eastern gate of Lod, and Allah will cause the Jews to be defeated… And the earth will be so filled with the Muslims as a vessel is filled with water. The entire world shall recite and follow one and the same Kalimah (word) and none shall be worshipped except Allah.” (Ibn Majah).

Why would allah be so deceiving as to fake a crucifixion and allow Jesus to then walk around and be seen by people in turn causing even more to follow Christianity?

**Allah deceived **Jesus’ dear Mother, His Disciples and many followers. Why would allah allow Jesus to met Paul on his way to Damascus and then send Ananias to cure Paul’s blindness?

Didn’t allah know he was in fact creating what he would then consider a false religion? OOPS!!

In a nutshell, I witnessed some Muslim men a few years ago.

This situation stems from a belief their birthright was stolen by Isaac. Abraham’s first born son was Ishmael, and Muslims are the decendents of Ishmael. However, Ishmael is not the heir God promised, because Ishmael is not Sarah’s son, but the son of her handmaid Hagar.

Muslims believe Jews corrupted the Scriptures to make Isaac fit the criteria of “first born.”

So instead of the line of the Messiah coming from Isaac Jacob and Jacob’s twelve sons, they say the linage is Ishmael, Kedar and Kedar’s twleve sons.

It is interesting to note, this linage never appears in the koran. Instead it goes: Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob and Jacob’s twelve sons! 🙂

In fact Kedar is never mentioned in the koran - ever!!!

I think this is God’s way of showing us the book is corrupt, but **Muslims claim it is written this way only to show the linage of prophets, not of the Messiah. Therefore, Jesus, to them, is a great prophet, not the Messiah.**I have this all written down somewhere, but that’s a summary to the best of my memory.
I have thought what you mention for a very long time, but I have never had a Muslims admit it. In fact the Muslims I have spoken with say the covenant for Ishmael was-

20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.

Yes. They believe Ishmael, not Isaac, is the “first born” and that the Jews have currupted the Scriptures to claim the promise of God to Abraham for themselves.

I don’t know what you are disagreeing with, but I am certain it is due to my poor wording. lol

according to bible and quran , Ismail was the first born for abraham
Jews, Christians and Muslims all agree that Ishmael peace be upon him was 13 years older than Isaac peace be upon him.

The conflict between the Jews and Christians, and the Muslims, is much more serious than that .
The Jews and Christians believe that any son or daughter born from a Servant or Slave woman is not considered a biological son or daughter.
Muslims on the other hand, believe that any son or daughter born from any mother is a biological son or daughter. Not only that, but the slave woman instantly becomes free.

according to Genesis 16 , hagar is his wife
3After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.
and according to Deuteronomy 21:15-17: ismail is the first born for abraham in the sight of God
“If a man have two wives, one beloved and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hash, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hash: for he is the beginning of the strength; the right of the firstborn is his.”

we believe that the Jews lied and fabricated lies on the mouth of Allah Almighty when they said that He, the Almighty, does not consider Ishmael to be Abraham’s real and biological son.

I have NEVER heard of this. Where did Jesus ever say that slaves are not equal? All people are welcome to be Christians. There is no inequality under Christianity. We are all the sons and daughters of God.

Thank you for this detailed information, elwill. I have a further question. I believe the Jews are foretold in the Qur’an to worship the false anti-Christ. This is somewhat similar to the fact that many Jews did not recognize who Christians consider the true Messiah (Jesus) and the prediction by the Gospel that the Jews would follow another (false) Messiah instead. (Most of us Jews just can’t seem to ever get it right!) My question is: according to Islam teaching, what will happen to the Jews when Jesus the Messiah returns? Will they all convert to Islam as the Christians do, or will they be destroyed? Also, what about those Jews and Christians who choose not to convert: will they be killed?

I’m aware of the historical and literary inconsistencies in Deuteronomy and the other four books of the Torah (as well as the whole Hebrew Bible and the New Testament), which Moses was supposed to have written by means of inspiration from G-d. However, I don’t believe these books should be read as a history book with or without errors, as you mentioned, but rather as a religious text containing both surface and more profound levels of meaning. That’s why the Oral Law (Talmud, containing the Mishnah and Gemara) and the Kabbalah (particularly the Zohar) are applied to the understanding of the Written Law or Torah; that is, as a means of deciphering its deeper and truer meanings. To take up one point you and many others have noted with regard to Moses’ writing about his own death, I’ve always interpreted this as a prophetic revelation. After all, Moses is regarded in Judaism as the greatest of the Prophets. Why might he not have foretold his own demise? The Hebrew Prophets and other figures in the Bible had many premonitions.
