The term “tridentine Holy Spirit” was used in a prayer in another thread in this section of CA.

I have not heard this term. What is it?

Thank you.

In what thread was the term used? I can’t seem to find it.

Perhaps the Tridentine Holy Spirit is the anti-“Spirit of Vatican II”. 😃

More likely, before Vatican II we spoke of the third person of the Trinity as The Holy Ghost. Since those days we find the Church using the name Holy Spirit for that person.

I think the poster means the Traditional Holy Spirit but since the word traditional has such a negative impact and connotation with so many of our progressive and hence right thinking brothers, perhaps the poster felt that Tridentine might be more acceptable.

Or maybe he just thought it was a cute play on words.

I thionk I can answer it from personal experience…

I experienced this after attending my first Tridentine Solemn Mass in a chapel that was designed as churches before they were wreckovated.

When I entered the chapel and saw it all- altar rail, altar against the wall with Tabernacle on it and large crucifix with six large candlesticks, all the statues and women with head coverings on…chills ran down my spine and a tear ran down my cheek.

When I heard the chant during the Mass…watched it all from the back pew…did not even attempt to follow in the missal…I was teary eyed through the entire Mass…felt like I was transported from earth to heaven almost…

But when I attend a Mass of a “Charasmatic priest” where he speaks “in tongues”, people all raise their hands to him…they clap and wail and sway - they entire congregation along with the priest at the altar…he only wears an alb and stole- uses a wine glass for a chalice… the “Tridentine Holy Spirit” (if that is what it’s called) makes me wanna throw up- makes me feel disgusted— makes me want to leave this “Sacreligious” event.

The Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit of all. One Spirit undivided. He is either present or not. There is “Tridentine” Holy Spirit or “Charismatic” Holy Spirit. You have felt the Holy Spirit more at the Tridentine Mass and he has touched you.

As a side note, I believe that the Holy Spirit is responsible for and present when any good deed or action takes place within the world. Afterall, he is the Lord of All.

I wonder if the congregation who attended Mass with St Paul felt the same way, since clearly his Masses fit the criteria of “charismatic” since tongues and other manifestations were routine with him. Of course that is way before Trent or even Gregorian chant were a gleam in some pope’s eye. Since Paul is an authority on the workings of the Holy Spirit in the Church, it might be good practice to discern evidence of those workings in light with his views, rather than through personal emotion and preference.

I somehow doubt that the early Church’s experience with Tongues had very much in common with what the Charismatics are doing these days. Sorry, it wasn’t quite the same thing. It should be noted that abuses started quite early in the Church and a great deal of what Paul wrote was in order to correct those same abuses. Also, if I am not mistaken, Paul did have some harsh words on certain charismatic events did he not? I do seem to recall that.

Maybe this entity is supposed to be distinguished from the Novus Ordo Holy Spirit!

😃

You may actually be right…and if so it is nothing to smile about.

I find that all the Charasmatic stuff is NOT the “Holy Spirit” but another entity entirely that is NOT God.
