I just heard about the Rule of the Theotokos on this thread, so I am happy about that. According to this link it dates back to the 8th century - I have no idea if that is accurate. But the basic structure of the Rule is quite similar to the structure of the rosary, in concept, if not exact details anyway. (and predates it) This often happens in the Church - traditions, particularly prayers as oral tradition are passed on over the centuries and influence other prayer traditions later on. I have not researched this theory on the rosary but it would not surprise me. By which I mean it actually had an origin in Eastern Orthodox prayers, probably also there were similar prayers in the Western Church going quite far back.
The rosary definitely post dates the schism with the East and I think might even post date the Reformation? My sense is it is fairly recent at least in its present form, but I could be wrong about that.
Probably there are differing attitudes in Orthodoxy toward the Latin rosary. As I said above I agree that much the same thing is being and has been done in the East for some time. Whatever differences exist between Orthodoxy and Catholicism, I don’t think there is much dispute about the value, even centrality, of prayers to Mary. The Immaculate Conception is a different story.
