Presumably the poster means novels as in fiction? In that case can I recommend Lord of the Rings,* the Hobbit*, the Silmarillion perhaps, all by JRR Tolkien.

I hear you.If a book
I’ll tend to go for it. But if it is unattractive as an object, probably I won’t. If a quick inspection reveals many errors of printing, that is a bad sign.
- is printed in an attractive fount
- has plenty of pages
- is well written

You want depressing, try The Colour Purple - book or movie, sheesh!I thought The Great Gatsby was ridiculously depressing.
I actually liked the Great Gatsby a lot. And it has an optimistic ending in some ways.I thought The Great Gatsby was ridiculously depressing.
Dang, I was hoping you had the biblical justification for the Jesus Terminator that LaHaye had near the end of the seriesLeft Behind series. Borrowed from friend. Dumb, boring. Glad I didn’t buy them.
“Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by James Joyce is the first title that popped into my head after reading the question. I found that book hard to read back in high school and I have no interest in trying to read it again.Portriat of the Artist… by James Joyce.
I read “Salem’s Lot” by Stephen King once. I was thoroughly creeped out by it. After a few years, I read it a second time. I don’t think I will ever read it again because I was once again thoroughly creeped out and couldn’t sleep well for sometime after reading it each time. But, I admit I am bothered by that kind of stuff anyway, though one of my favorite books is “The Stand” also by Stephen King. Go figure.…The most terrifying book I ever read was Children of the Corn. …
I cant read Stephen King. Even reading reviews of his books is too scary for me. I actually started watching a dramatization of a British childrens book called Children of the Stones on Nickelodeon and had to turn it off. Later i read the book and enjoyed it though.
