It reminds me of the folks that said the Pope is Satanic because some processional crosses have a skull and cross bones on them. Umm, yeah, Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, which means: “The place of the skull”. Nothing satanic about that.
 
I got my current rosary from Cordbands and it has skulls for the pater beads. Seems fitting since I use it to pray for the dead a lot. Skull iconography is all over the place in the Catholic Church, it’s a reminder of our human mortality.
 
I was just over in that area but we didn’t have time to visit Sedlec. I’m already planning a return trip. There is another such place in Rome my priest told me about.
 
I’m disappointed to see the Pope carrying a Cross like that. It looks way too modern. Gives me a bad vibe, but I’m not the Catholic art police. I’m sure I’m not the only one that has seen this thread and wasn’t a little bit put off by the cross.

There is no rule that says a Pope cannot display or own an artistic cross. Those who do not like it do not have to buy a copy of it 🙂
 
Well I suppose critical opponents of Pope Francis will always find something to dissect. If it’s not a cross, than it will be his choice of attire, haircut, etc.
 
It might just be my personal taste. I thought jp II’s cross a little weird as well… I was just making an off hand remark. I guess as Clare pointed out, it’s not his crosier.

For his official ferula, I think he is alternating between Pope Benedict’s and Pope JPII’s.
I’ve seen the cross with the shepherd and I know that’s his own choice, but when does he use that?
 
The cross could be photoshopped by someone creating mischief.
It doesn’t look totally convincing to me,
It’s very easy to alter an image, clone, paste, etc

Thank you. I was using Google Image Search when I asked my question. I couldn’t find it. But with the links given, I was able to.

H.H. Pope Francis, at St. John Lateran June 2017, see that cross at 2:35 in clear view.
