St. Anthony used a T shaped crutch. St. Francis adopted that cross from St. Anthony. Taw is also the last letter of the Hebrew Alphabet and symbol of completion.

I don’t know if the Pope felt compelled to honor the gift, but I saw that it was a gift.

The cross is a portable travel cross, made by Genova Cornigliano Steel Plant workers as a gift to the Holy Father when he visited them, and is stainless steel recycled from old spare parts, and which took about a month to make it.
 
There is a great deal of history behind the papal ferula most commonly associated with Saint John Paul II was actually crafted for Pope Paul VI in 1963 by Italian artist Lello Scorzelli:

While a Tau-based papal ferula would be appropriate for a pope named Francis, the one the OP is asking about is extremely unattractive to me. I wonder if it is his official papal ferula? I sure hope not.
 
Ok, I saw limb bones in the vertical and rib bones in the horizontal. I like it. Anthropamorphized cross.

Also there is the silver Risen Christ papal ferula, and others without corpus that H.H. Pope Francis has used: a simple wooden papal ferula, one with red and blue cross member with fish and a heart, and another golden metallic cross.
 
I’ve read entire Web pages on how the ScorzellI ferula with the corpus on it, which has been around for many years now. Is somehow evil and satanic too. Whatever design a Pope uses, some twisted person is going to find a way to see hidden evil in it. Makes me feel sorry for the Pope.

If I remember correctly, he did accept it. So wish he would have put his hand up, turned around and walked out. No need to be diplomatic when confronting evil.
