What Is Your Authority?

OK, I’ve read it again. You quote a familiar Gospel verse. You say you are making your statements as an admonishment to all Christians.
I am not aware of any Catholic who has ever told a non-Catholic not to use Christ’s name. It’s pretty rare even for a non-Catholic to tell Catholics not to use Christ’s name. So what was the point of your post?
My point was that for Christians to be unified, they need to keep in mind that God/Christ moves in wonderous ways and even though someone doesn’t “belong” to “our” group, doesn’t mean they do not have the blessing and the backing of the Holy Trinity.

The folks at the WBC in Kansas (the ones that picket soldier’s funerals) have “solid” bible evidence for their point of view.

My guess is that most everyone here, including our Protestant friends, would agree that their (the WBC) theology i.e. making the connection from their biblical texts to “America is doomed”, etc., is, shall we charitably say…flawed.

So what is the authority that says they are in error? If one uses biblical texts to counter their arguments, who’s to say that your interpretation and use of texts is correct when theirs is not? It’s like a he-said, she-said.

Without extrabiblical authority, scripture can be manipulated to “prove” many things, some of which are seriously messed up.

Sure. But for Catholics, the Church is not “our” group, it’s Christ’s group. Insofar as other Christians believe and practice in accordance with what Christ’s group does in accxordance with Christ’s commands and the Holy Spirit’s guidance and assurance of freedom from error, they have the backing of the Holy Trinity. Insofar as they depart from it, they are opposed to the Trinity. The Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, who does not contradict Himself.

I think Protestant ran away because we strayed too far from his main point.

He asked an impossible to answer question. How can we provide a satisfactory answer to someone who vehemently disagrees with Tradition? He wanted “proof” that the bible said it was incomplete or insufficient. In his zeal to deny Tradition, he completely overlooked the fact that this is not the purpose of the bible. It was written to complement and preserve Tradition, not supplant it. His answer lies elsewhere, in illumination by the Holy Spirit.

As an aside, my chaplain at work is from the SDA church. They are extreme anti-Catholics by the teaching of their “prophetess” and founder, Ellen White. They fervently believe the “Catholic church is the whore of Babylon”, “the Pope is the anti-Christ”, “the bible alone is sufficient” and several other strange doctrines, some of which they share with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. They are Protestant, and share many beliefs with us, but absolutely hate the Catholic Church while impossibly loving its members which, of course, it consists solely of.

This is the danger of being a “cafeteria Christian”, throwing Tradition out, and giving “on-going revelatory” status to a current age non-Apostle.

Christ’s peace and the illumination of the Holy Spirit.

That’s too bad.😦
It was my understanding from his origional post that he had a number of points he wished to address from the article he had linked to.

I was enjoying this discussion too.

Protestant,

Come back, and we’ll answer your questions directly!

petergee,

I belong to Christ’s group totally, utterly, most emphatically I do. However, I do not belong to the religious organization called the Roman Catholic Church.

Agreed, the Spirit does not contradict Himself, man (meaning mankind) does that.

I think what Petergee is getting at is how can two churches teach conflicting doctrines (i.e. baptism now saves you vs. it’s just a sign) and both be guided by the Holy Spirit.

This does not work.

Notworthy,

Any decision made with man (meaning mankind) involved can conflict. The Spirit cannot contridict the Son’s nature. Christ doesn’t force anything on anyone. He gives everyone a choice. The Spirit can guide the person, but the person still has the option of choice. We (meaning mankind) make choices that are not always the ones the Spirit wanted us to. We (meaning mankind) are the infallible ones.

Take for example the recent problems that the Roman Catholic Church has had. Clearly, the men involved were not being guided by the Spirit when they performed their misdeeds. THEY did the contridicting not the Holy Spirit. Yet, one would assume that at some point they had been touched by the Holy Spirit or the Roman Catholic Church would not have ordained them as priests.

Since this problem is widespread, there must be a common origen. Who hates the Church that Christ founded, and who works tirelessly to its destruction? Find out and you have the source of the world’s problems.

Christ’s peace.

But you overlook one thing, my friend. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide the Church to all Truth. If Jesus is not guiding my Church to teach me, then there is no reason to follow it.

Yes, men fail. Of course they do. But tell me any one thing these guys taught in error with the Church’s backing. One thing.

Christ’s peace is the source of the worlds problems? Huh?

I kid, I kid. That’s just the first impression I got when I read this. 🙂

That’s a name which was invented by others in the 17th century. But yes if you follow Christ you do at least in a partial sense belong to the Catholic Church.

The Spirit guides the Church to prevent it from teaching falsehood. He does not prevent its members from sinning.

Why would one assume that?

po18guy,

One would hope that ALL Christians know who that master of subtlety is.
