What Is Your Authority?

To be sure – but does it really matter? I mean, is it really an insult if we don’t care? There is nothing inherently offensive about the term, as there are with some racial epithets, so I see no reason not to adopt it as ours.

That’s how we beat 'em – say, “So what?” 😉

Peace,
Dante
Yes, that’s the theory behind why some militant Black activists refer to themselves as “N****rs”, to “take back” the offensive expression. IMO this strategy rarely works. It doesn’t seem to have reduced prejudice against Black people.

And there is nothing “inherently offensive” about “n****r”. After all it’s basically just the Latin word for “black” - a purely descriptive term. The offence comes from its historical cultural association with racism and racial slavery.

OTOH “Roman Catholic”, “Roman Catholic Church” and “Roman Catholicism”, are inherently offensive. They imply that the Catholic Church is not the real Catholic Church, or at best that it is only one of several “Catholic Churches” with different doctrines. And also that it has no rights, jurisdiction, or even right to exist outside the city of Rome and its immediate environs.

Yes I’m aware that some Catholics in the US have recently chosen to refer to themselves as “Roman Catholic”, some even seeing this as a better description than the simply true “Catholic”. IMO this is a mistake which can only cause confusion and offence.

If someone doesn’t understand what you mean when you say “Catholic”, then amplify it to “belonging to the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church”. Adding “Roman” is neither necessary nor desirable.

Only one had the courage to attend His execution.
May Christ’s PEACE be with you.

I just finished reading By What Authority? a short book written by Evangelical turned Catholic Mark P. Shea. I am willing to send a copy to Protestants, especially Evangelicals, if only they would actually read it. It explains how he searched for the bible to attest to itself, and found that it basically meant nothing without the Sacred Tradition that established the canon of scripture in the first place. If only they would read it…

***Hi, po18guy!

I know exactly what you mean…

…some might read it; but they will start from the premise that a Catholic wrote it and thus the author cannot be given much credibility…

…but give them a tape/cd which guarantees the keys to financial freedom and wellbeing and they think it was an angel that revealed these super hidden Biblical secrets!

…go figure!

I really liked that book too.

This article discusses his book:

There is a website where you can read Chapter 6 of his book.

Funny that, once you go way back in Christian history, even before Luther 🙂 you find the very early church to be awfully catholic. So, since “this is my bible. I am who it says I am. I am not who it says I am not”, is Joel Osteen … incomplete? Apparently, his latest book is about denying self, picking up your cross and suffering unto death like Christ. It’s titled: “Being a better you”???

Being in a church does not save anyone.
It is the first step. Yes, just because you are in the Church doesn’t mean you are saved yet - that doesn’t happen until after we die, and only if we die in a state of grace. But if you never enter the Church, then you will never take the first step on the journey towards Heaven, and then you will never have access to the grace that you need in order to be able to enter into Heaven after you die.

It’s true what they say - “just because it’s in a garage doesn’t mean it’s a car,” - but it’s also true that if you don’t take your car to the garage for regular maintenance, it won’t fit for anything but the scrap yard, in a very short time. 😉

***Hi, po18guy!

…so the Cross has been discovered… :hmmm:

…as a child, I remember Catholics being criticized for continuing to display a Crucified Christ on the Altar… many tried to explain that we should come into the 20th century and display a risen Christ…

…as an adult much of the criticism revolved around the Chruch’s embracement of suffering…

It seems that everything old is new again!

The same as a going to a hospital doesn’t save you either. If you are really sick and need surgery you go to a hospital … removing tumors at home is not the recommended way to treat a cancer. If you are spiritually sick then going to a church is the right step. Christ didnt come for the healthy, he came for the spiritually sick and dying.

What in this Holy Book of God would be classed as “insufficient” or “incomplete?” (for salvation). If all you can do is to appeal to Catholic authority; then you have not even come close to answering my first questions here. If The Holy Bible is so “incomplete” or “insufficient” then please let us know exactly where these faults are so that we finally know the whole truth on this matter.
The 2 commandments of Jesus, Love God utterly and Love your neighbor as yourself, are “sufficient” for salvation.

So why bother with the rest of the bible?

It’s not a matter of having what is SUFFICIENT for salvation, but what is most advantageous for salvation!

Those who use only the bible limit themselves unnecessarily, and are seen by Catholics as “self retarding”.

Why limit oneself to “the sufficient” when so much more is available? The non-Catholic actually DOES use the Church as a resource all the time, but they never give it any credit for that help. The bible itself is the prime example of that.

…with love. If not in love, then in vain.
With facts… and love. If you can’t bring the facts then your response is useless to PROTESTants. They need to realize that what they are doing is wrong.
