Mother Teresa or Therese of The Little Flower either one your in good hands God Bless.

I chose Andrew (the Apostle) because my middle name is Andrew. I think that’s the only reason, and that’s the only reason I can even remember what it was.

I wasn’t serious about my faith at the time.

Catherine, with the proper “C.” 😉 I always liked the name and it goes well with my first and middle names.

I chose Teresa, after St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein). I think her story of conversion and martyrdom is both heart-breaking and inspiring.

I am a later-in-life convert, so I particularly like to read about saints who didn’t come from a cradle Catholic background.

This is my case as well, though for a different reason: I was confirmed when I was an infant and in no position to make decisions for myself 😉
😄

I guess since I was 16 when I was baptized and 34 when confirmed I can’t really use that reason. 😉

Interesting story. Did you enter through RCIA? Why were you not confirmed at 16?

I chose Catherine because that was closest to my mother’s name… Then in a hurry I had to choose which Catherine and I chose Catherine of Sienna. Had no idea why, except I could pronounce it… DH and I moved to his neck of the woods and the church there–St. Catherine of Sienna. She has been special to me. I still don’t know all that much about her except she is a Doctor of the Church!

My mother’s name was Kathleen…

Veronica. “true image” because she was gifted with the true image of Christ.
Scholars don’t know her real name, she was called Veronica (true image in Latin) due to the miracle. I also named one of my daughters V. Every time we visit a different parish (locally or on vacation) I snap a picture of the 6th station for her. So she has this collection of St .Veronica images.

Agnes, because Our Lord told me in a dream that that’s the name I should choose.

petra St. Catherine of Sienna 1347-1380 .Although her parents opposed her vocation she succeeded in her goal. At 16she entered the convent of the Sisters of St.Dominic. During her religious life she centered on her visions, after which she began writing. Her letters provide a window into the history and culture of the period. They are valued because they show that her activity extended far beyond the normal boundaries for women of her time and position in the church and society. Also she did not learn to write until almost the .
end of her life, her writings earned her the title of doctor of the church She was declared a Saint 81 years after her death. Was able to find this info on her. Hope you find it useful God Bless

Thank you so much. I could have looked it up myself, but you were so nice to do the work… I will definitely do some research. Right now I’m reading St. Faustina’s Diary (Kindle Book) and "The Little Flowers of St. Francis by Raphael Brown. 🙂

St. Dymphna

My first reaction to her was utter revulsion.

Her life was nasty , brutish, and short.

Her life story , if presented frankly and unsentimentally would make a great and terrible horror movie , deserving of an X -rating , NOT on account of any sexual content. The story is that bad.

One of the 50 or so reasons I converted to Catholicism was because the Church saw fit to make her the patron saint of … the author of her destruction. Such an institution is either a shocking example of evil, or a shocking example of integrity.

She is the patron saint of the mentally ill. It’s hard to imagine a demographic more stigmatized. Murderers , rapists, and drug dealers get more respect — unless they get labelled crazy . 😉

She is an Irish saint. My ethnicity is Celtic , both sides.
But the scene of her martyrdom , and her primary shrine, is in Belgium.
Like her, I’m an accidental / involuntary expatriate.

She was Martyred when she was 14 or 15, so she’s the eternal 14 or 15 year old girl. I’m an old man.
So I’m cast in the worst possible light, or at least humiliated, every time the subject of the " D " in my signature comes up.
And that was the idea.
I’m apparently one of those ever-dwindling number of archaic dinosaurs who thinks being cast in the worst possible light and humiliated is good for you.

I cannot think , right off hand , of any reasons I had for converting to Christianity that I , or most other people ( ? ) , would describe with words like, "faith " or " belief " .
Rather ; Dry , dull, cynical, skeptical reasons , more akin to the thought or sentiment that goes into accounting , or growing corn.

But Saint Dymphna was martyred during the Dark Ages , so there is scarce any proof of her existence except the bare assertion that she did exist, and the fact that the shrine in Belgium has existed for quite a while.
So, my belief that she does exist , and even knows my name , is shear, unadulterated, faith.

By the way, not least, I think she’s a quirky, whimsical, wonderful person , if the vague feelings in my big toe signify anything. .

John the Baptist, as I was baptized, confirmed and received first Eucharist at the Easter vigil mass in 1987. I won’t say how long it took me to enter the Church… :-0

I think you you have a wonderful Saint. I know the story of St.Dymphna I agree to the point that her life was tragic. Yes she is the patron Saint of the mentally ill, also those with emotional and nervous disorders. I was led to her when my mom started having anxiety and panic attacks. I got my mom a medal of St. Dymphna and prayed for her intercession. When the subject of the ‘D’ in your signature comes up be proud and give into the feelings in your big toe and let it move . God Bless you…

Just a question from here in England - is it customary in the USA to actually include your confirmation name in your name? We don’t have that tradition here (as far as I know), but as I don’t have a given middle name I’d be quite happy to do it.

,My confirmation name ‘Maria’ Is used as my middle name. I have used it since I was confirmed at the age of eight and it is legally my name on all important documents. Alot of people use their confirmation as their. middle name which it is. God Bless

Typically no, most of us just use the first, middle and last name we received at birth (or married name). That’s why some here can’t even remember their confirmation name.

My son chose Ignatius for his confirmation name, by the way, since he went to a Jesuit high school and liked the name.
