What is your favorite band?

Rush. My username comes from them. Their new album, “Snakes and Arrows,” is coming out next month, followed by a tour.

Yes. I’ve seen them in concert twice, and Steve Howe solo two other times. You gotta like a band who, if their songs are less than eight minutes long, it doesn’t count.

Genesis, especially the Peter Gabriel/Steve Hackett years.

Pink Floyd. Everything from the Syd Barrett era through the present.

Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler. Few people can use the guitar to evoke a mood like MK. His vocals are also compelling.

Chicago in the early days. Even before the death of Terry Kath, they got mired in syurpy glurge. But Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago II are classics.

King Crimson. I’m just getting into them, and I really like the Discipline album.

The late Michael Hedges. A guitar master who died much too soon. We saw him in concert two weeks before he was found dead off a roadside cliff near Mendocino, CA.

By and large, I have no use for Christian Contemporary music. To me, it’s just singers and bands putting their fingers in the air, deciding what secular artist they want to sound like, and going from there. Exceptions: Steve Taylor/Chagall Guevara and Daniel Amos/Swirling Eddies.

And when I hear Adult Contemporary music, such as is played at the local doctor/dentist offices, I want to rip the speaker out of the wall or ceiling.

I agree with the prog stuff. Floyd, ELP, King Crimson, Alan Parsons were my favorites. Always thought that the Stones and Beatles were a bit over rated, although the Beatles later stuff was pretty good (Blue Greatest Hits era.)

My favorite band right now is Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. Check 'em out: azpeacemakers.com/

A couple of their songs even have a hint of Catholic stuff in them.

I’m amazed that there’s so many prog fans here. King Crimson “Discipline” is a great album! Elephant Talk!

The pre-Phil Collins Genesis stuff and Yes are also good. Did you ever hear the pre-Steve Perry Journey? Their first three albums were great before Perry turned them into an 80’s love song band.
 
REM, definitely one of the greatest bands of all time.

The Grapes of Wrath, a Canadian 80’s band that never got a good break in the USA. Their videos are now on Youtube and I would highly recommend them.

Gin Blossoms, nothing says 90’s like this band.

And although many mention The Beatles, and rightfully so, I have always felt that Wings never gets enough credit as a band that stood on its own and made some really great music. Of course, it helped that Paul was the front man, but still! Great songs.

And seriously, how can I forget The Moody Blues???

Aw, now, I’d say they are similar…but still apart in their own right. Now the Tossers, another band I love, are much more like the Pogues and pre-date Flogging Molly by a few years.
 
Stuck in the 80’s (and not Christian bands) Hard to pick just one

**The Go-Go’s 😃
**(Probably my favorite- Was a real big fan in the early 80’s. Last saw them on tour 2001. They had a new album and a dvd called God Bless the Go-Go’s with them pictured kinda saintly on the back cover which caused some Catholic backlash actually. But the album is great if you can find any place to still get it. Also a live concerrt DVD they did in New York’s Central park in 2001 also called God Bless the Go-Go’s)

Far out – though I’m not much for Elvis.

I dig “stoner” music – even though I’ve never used an illegal drug. Honest.

Laid-back, with a good groove…and hopefully something interesting to say.

I also like playing Joni Mitchell depending on what mood I’m in. Recently it’s been another nameless album of torch songs. My favourite is You’ve Changed. It’s so sad.

Joni btw has collaborated with the Alberta Ballet to produce Dancing Joni: the Fiddle and the Drum which opens in Calgary in April. I think there is a lot of Bob Dylan in the score.

OK sometimes I like Blue Rodeo, but get a little turned off by their constant references to seedy bars and motels. But I am hooked on their grand guitar riffs.

OK, here’s one: Leahy. Perfectly Catholic. Celtic. The most fabulous fiddle I have ever heard anywhere. Miles ahead of Ashley MacIsaac any day.

The Moody Blues. I just watched their '92 concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre - hokey smokes, they’re great!

Last night after Holy Thursday mass, I visited with someone I hadn’t seen for awhile. We talked about getting together with friends, and I mentioned watching this dvd with pizza and beer. She had no idea who the Moody Blues were.:eek: I asked how old was she. 31. Good grief.

I’m looking forward to turning this child on to them.👍

I like Rush too. My favourite Rush albums are Hemispheres and 2112. I actually did a report on philosophy in Rush’s lyrics back in college. I compared their lyrics to the philosophies of Ayn Rand and Friedrich Nietzsche.

I really cannot say that a have a favourite band, though. There are just too many that I like. I like a wide variety of music: rock, country, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, punk, Christian rock, and classical. I cannot tolerate New Age, rap, pop (aka Britney Spears).
