Up until about 1990 I was a big music fan. Generally I have always only liked the band if the lyrics had, if not redeeming qualities, had a story that made one think in some form or fashion about God.
Always an exception Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers- Guitar Trouble album just rocks.
Matthew Sweet- Girlfriend; is loaded with interesting teen angst religious inuendo with songs like Divine Intervention, Evangeline, and Holy War.
Rush- up to the Moving Pictures album. 2112 reminds me of the movie Logans Run, and a few songs that references Tolkien’s fanatsy works still keep me playing them once in a while.
Neil Young is great though his political views color his latest almbum too much.
Alabama, Skynard, Pink Floyd, Stones, George Thorogood, and David Bowie is always welcome on my stereo. I do not listen to Led Zepplin like I used to though I still like the music.
As a early teen, the first almbum I ever heard was Rush- 2112. I was hooked on rock & roll. The 2nd group I heard, but first album I bought was Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
I was Confirmed a year later and had been and still am a regular reader of the bible.
The song that grabed me on that album was; A National Acrobat. How dangerous it was to think, even in the theatrical sense Satan might be talking to me through them. Because of that thought two lines were intriguing to my 14 year old mind: “Love has given life to you and now it’s your concern.” & “Just remember love is life, and hate is living death.”
Why would “Satan” tell me that?
After that I got all of their earlier albums and the later ones until Ozzy left the band. With songs like After Forever, Lord of this World, Children of the Grave, War pigs, and Megalomania…some walk the edge of danger spiritually, but those reinforced my belief in God to be honest. Other songs have a social challange that had different affects on me. One I can share is the song Hand of Doom. Listening to that song as I went through my experimental stage in my later teen years I must say kept me from going to far.
I’d have to say Sabbath is still my favorite band.
