They [MewithoutYou] sound very Catholic… anyone know if they are?

(if you haven’t heard of them yet get the album… its amazing!)
Their drummer (Richard) is Catholic. The rest are non-Catholic Christians.

They’re by no means a “Christian band”, as far as the label is concerned though. They do however recognize and maintain that their spirituality is present in the music they make. Their front-man and vocalist Aaron (who’s mother is Sufi and father is Jewish) is the most vocal in the band, and has good head on his shoulders (as well as a tremendously large heart), though he’d probably bop me on the head for saying it.

They’re an incredibly talented group, that is for sure.

Right now, it’s Underoath … They’re Christian hardcore … VERY awesome stuff. The amount of seculars who are listening to this stuff is unbelievable (at least until you hear the music; then you get it).

Dream Theater 👍

I grew up listening to Yes, Rush, Queen, Pink Floyd…

I discovered Dream Theater almost 20 years ago and they blew me away. Amazing musicians and writers. They are progressive and are strongly influenced by the bands I grew up with.

As a bonus, it dawned on me after listening to them that they are influenced by thier faith a good deal (although not a Christian band). Thier most prolific writers are John Petrucci, who is Catholic, and Mike Portnoy, who is Jewish. Thier original keyboard player (Kevin Moore) was also Catholic. He designed a band logo based on the Sacred Heart (which totally went over my head at the time). They write frequently about thier faith - about friends dealing with crises of faith, etc.

But that’s all just a bonus. They are amazing musicians who refuse to follow the format for radio success. After some criticism from music execs and media, talking about how they need to write shorter, “radio friendly” songs, they replied with the “Scenes From A Memory” album… which is one track around 70-ish minutes. Broken up into acts of course, heh.

Here’s a sampling of some lyrics from a couple of my favorites…

From “Scarred” by Petrucci:
*"People in prayer for me
everyone there for me
Sometimes I feel I should face this alone
My soul exposed
It calms me to know that I won’t
Code:
Blood...Heal me
Fear...Change me
Belief will always save me"*
From “Lines In The Sand” by Petrucci:
*"Sometimes, in the wreckage of our wake
There’s a bitterness we harbor
And hate for hatred’s sake
Sometimes we dig an early grave
And crucify our instincts
For the hope we couldn’t save
Code:
Sometimes a view from sinless eyes
Centers our perspective
And pacifies our cries
Sometimes the anguish we survive
And the mysteries we nurture
Are the fabrics of our lives"*
From “Glass Prison” by Portnoy:
*"Way off in the distance I saw a door
I tried to open
I tried forcing with all of my will but still
The door wouldn’t open
Code:
Unable to trust in my faith
I turned and walked away
I looked around, felt a chill in the air
Took my will and turned it over

The glass prison which once held me is gone
A long lost fortress
Armed only with liberty
And the key of my willingness

Fell down on my knees and prayed
"Thy will be done"
I turned around, saw a light shining through
The door was wide open"*
Good stuff 🙂
