Oops, missed one. This is year bird #115 Rivoli’s Hummingbird formerly known as the Magnificent Hummingbird. It is a magnificent bird at nearly 6" long. See the squirrel?

Ewwww. Did you know that there’s a separate receptor in our brains that recognizes snakes?

I think it’s good in that we can recognize danger when we see it. I think it’s bad because I’m freaking out over every branch or root I step over.

Hey, they get hungry and need to eat, just like any other critter. šŸ™‚

We have a little family of magpies on our block, one Summer they alerted me to a snake in the grass ,so I was able to dispatch it. I take more notice of the hens and magpies calls now.

I like Magpies. We have many in certain places in Colorado. They are beggars and have many similarities with crows, but the magpies are more elegantly dressed.

I think the magpies here are quite different ,we just have wild ones but often the rescued hurt baby ones make great pets.So many nest in trees along the roadside,so many are hit with cars.

I’ve seen a fair amount in this life, but I NEVER seen that before. 🤣

Thanks!

So I have a bird story and a snake story, both relating back to the same cat.

My friend’s cat is an excellent hunter. Or I should say, an excellent ā€œcatcher.ā€ He rarely kills, he just likes to catch things and delivers them - alive - to his owner. He’ll give her mice and chipmunks in person, but birds get put in her closet. I kid you not, there have been times when she’s opened her closet door only to have house sparrows and finches come flying out of it!

One day, this cat found a hole at the foot of their tree. My friend and her family watched in amusement as he pawed at it - until he ripped a three foot snake out of it! Well my poor friend is PETRIFIED of snakes. She screamed and bundled her family inside, telling her children to help her close and lock all the doors and windows while kitty killed the snake (I guess he thought it was a threat). Well kitty was very proud of himself, and triumphantly dragged the dead snake to the house - just to find every entrance closed up and his family peeking out at him from behind curtains. He sat at the door meowing to be let in for quite a long while, but he was not allowed in as long as it looked like he would bring the snake with him.
***I should probably add that kitty was taken to the vet. Happily, he had no injuries from his battle with the snake.

It was fairly warm outside today, so I got outside get a bit of yard cleanup done, and a hawk landed on a low laying tree limb about 7-8 feet from me. I told it to help itself to all the squirrels it cold eat. It squawked once and flew off.

Ah, CJ, you’re bringing up memories of my dear grandma when you call them buzzards. Grandma was from the south and always called them buzzards instead of vultures.

You know what are downright big, ugly and scary? Turkey vultures!

They were hanging out in our town several years ago during 2 years of very bad winters. I’d never seen one before and couldn’t believe it when I began seeing them on people’s front lawns. At first I thought they were wild turkeys but somehow knew they weren’t. My mom thought they were vultures so I looked them up online and sure enough . . turkey vultures! ā€œshiver!ā€

Birds? I really like Chicken. Especially when they turn into nuggets.

Roast Turkey. Roast Ruck. Pheasant under glass. Squab. They’re all good. Let’s face it, modern dinosaurs are tasty.

It’s fascinating that the puppy knows just how gentle he needs to be with the bird to not hurt him but still roughhouse with him.
