Any 2 Maccabees fans out there?

For me, the Chapter 7 narrative is hard to beat… especially:

*“What are you waiting for? I will not obey the king’s command. I obey the command of the law given to our forefathers through Moses.
31
But you, who have contrived every kind of affliction for the Hebrews, will not escape the hands of God.
32
We, indeed, are suffering because of our sins.
33
Though our living Lord treats us harshly for a little while to correct us with chastisements, he will again be reconciled with his servants.
34
But you, wretch, vilest of all men! do not, in your insolence, concern yourself with unfounded hopes, as you raise your hand against the children of Heaven.
35
You have not yet escaped the judgment of the almighty and all-seeing God.
36
My brothers, after enduring brief pain, have drunk of never-failing life, under God’s covenant, but you, by the judgment of God, shall receive just punishments for your arrogance.
37
Like my brothers, I offer up my body and my life for our ancestral laws, imploring God to show mercy soon to our nation, and by afflictions and blows to make you confess that he alone is God.
38
Through me and my brothers, may there be an end to the wrath of the Almighty that has justly fallen on our whole nation.”
Good stuff there.

Nope!

Plus 2 Maccabees is not Scripture.

2 Maccabees has some historical errors in the text. I will not reference the praying to or for the dead (which we already know is unbiblical with a Roman Catholic mis-teaching that it is biblical), but Jeremiah took the tabernacle of the ark to a cave in the mountain Moses saw Canaan (2 Maccabees 2:1-16) clearly are contradictions in the book of 2 Maccabees when tested with true Scripture.

And to note even the Roman Catholic Encyclopedia admits it has errors on details. Example: Writers of Sirach (prologue) and 2 Mac (2:24-43; 15:38-40) indicate they were not inspired.

From the Douay-Rheims Haydock Bible for 2 Maccabes 2:24-32:

“Ver. 27 No easy task, &c. The Spirit of God, that assists the sacred penman, does not exempt them from labor in seeking out the matter which they are to treat of, and the order and manner in which they are to deliver it. So S. Luke wrote the gospel, having diligently attained to all things. Lk. i. 3. Ch. – This evangelist had to inquire of others. W. – Inspiration preserves from all danger of mistake. When something future is revealed, there is less difficulty, as God must then dictate the very words. Hence Jeremias wrote with the utmost ease, as Baruch testified. Jer. xxxvi. 18, 32. H. – The prophets had, therefore, only to write or speak from the mouth of God. Others were excited by him to treat of history, &c. and were preserved from error, but not from labor. Bellar. Verb. i. 15. – In vain then do our adversaries attempt to prove that this book is not inspired. M.”

As for 2 Maccabees 15:38-40, the author gave no hint of lack on inspiration. He was stating that based on his knowledge, this was the best he could do, he was talking about his writing style, not if it was inspired or not.

Just like:

“For though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but in all things, we have been made manifest to you.” (2 Corinthians 11:6)

St. Paul is not denying inspiration, he wondered if he was presenting the gospel well. It is the same case with the author of 2nd Maccabees.

In no particular order:

Canticle of Canticles
Malachias
John

:tiphat:

I love the psalms

For me Genesis would be the most boring (no offence to any genesis fans)

And revelation would be the most confusing and disturbing not a fan on gory, firery, creepy, bowls of wrath sort of person 😉

There’s so many books I love in Scripture, but the Gospel of John is probably my favorite if I had to choose.
I was going to give a list of other books that are particular favorites of mine, but once it got past 10, I figured I might as well just say I like lots of books in the Bible.

Tobit.

It is a typological masterpiece foreshadowing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Christ’s death, and the Eucharist.

This is a tough one. I have several favorites:
  1. John
  2. Psalms
  3. James
  4. Acts
  5. Jeremiah
