  1. Macaroni and cheese.
  2. Ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Heath Bar Crunch is the current favorite.
  3. Cheesecake.
  4. French vanilla bread pudding. This is a good one to make for the family because it’s made in individual custard cups, so when it’s gone, it’s gone. Can’t sit and eat myself sick.
  5. Of course, chocolate. Dove milk chocolate.
  6. Another coffee addict here.

OK, then…

SAVORY- Tie for real hot dogs, not what you folks in other parts of the country eat, and Italian beef. Hot dog must be kosher beef (Vienna is traditional, but I like Best best). It is placed on a steamed poppy-seeded hot dog bun. The condiments are bright yellow mustard, neon green pickle relish, finely chopped white onion, a cucumber spear, a pickle spear, two tomato wedges, sport peppers and a dusting of celery salt. Italian beef was invented in Chicago, and must be eaten on french bread cut to the desired length. The bread is briefly dipped in the juice. The juice is created by simmering the meat with onions, green peppers and Italian spices (crock pots do this well). The meat is sliced and loaded into the french bread. I like green peppers on mine.
SALTY- Plain potato chips with sour cream, on the side, to dip.
SWEET- Fannie May trinidads.
BACON- Homemade chicarones with bleu cheese.

Let us not forget the mother of all comfort foods, pot roast and gravy with either polish noodles (noodles in onion gravy) or mashed potatoes that have been baking with the pot roast.

-Baked potato with lots of butter and salt
-Hummous and pita
-Plain Ruffles potato chips
-Homemade macaroni and cheese
-My dad’s meatloaf and mom’s mashed potatoes

I make my own cranberry sauce though. None of that stuff in a can for my family! I always hated that slurp sound that would come from the can too.
I love that sound! We always remove the cranberry sauce from the can very carefully, so it retains that good can shape, complete wilth all the ridges. 😃

I had forgotten about macaroni and cheese; that’s another favorite. I’m looking for a recipe for a homemade version that tastes really cheesy (in a good way)!

I seem to remember an “All In The Family” episode where Archie complained about the cranberry sauce (the homemade kind from fresh berries) because his cranberry sauce was supposed to be in the shape of the can.

For mac and cheese, I use the recipe from the Martha Stewart Living cookbook, but with all sharp cheddar (she calls for a mix of cheeses). It’s not too difficult and very yummy. 👍

In my family, we have to have both kinds for Thanksgiving – the jelly and the whole berry (either canned or homemade) because some people like the one, and some like the other.

I saw a recipe for mac and cheese in the “Martha Stewart Everyday” magazine – I wonder if that’s the same one as the cookbook… It looked good; I’ll have to give it a try in a couple of weeks (I’ll be done testing recipes for my book group by then).

Well I guess I am a culinary snob because when I am sick I only want MY mashed potatoes and MY macaroni and cheese.Of course,I am too sick to make these things and since I follow no recipe,I can’t tell anyone how to make them for me,but my! the fantasies of those tasty treasures sustain me for awhile.

Anything buttery, cheesy, noodley, warm and/or potatoey is my only true comfort food.I make a fettucine alfredo that is high on my comfort food list too.Well, shoot,I’ve done talked myself into a carb high!
YUM

Ohh, fettucini alfredo… I haven’t tried making it, but why would I when there are two restaurants nearby that have wonderful versions of it on their menus? SO good…

On food networks website there is a mac n cheese recipe by Emeril that is realllllyyyyy good!! I haven’t made it myself but my sis-in-law made it for a family function and it was so cheesy and good!!!

Favorite? That’s like Choosing my favorite kid. I love em all!

A real Chicago dog (Vienna Beef) is always good. I had a couple earlier today.

I’ll French toast anything. A new one: Banana bread. I cut my muffin recipie with 1/3rd yellow cake batter to make it less crumbly so it stands up to being dunked in the batter. Bake it in loaves instead of Muffins. Brown in butter and then put on a tray in 350 deg oven for a few minutes to finish.

Topping: Toast pecans in skillet with a pinch of cayenne, add a stick of unsalted butter, a bit of brown sugar and a cup of maple syrup and cook to about 450 until it forms a good caramel. add 1/4 cup heavy cream. Cool to about 150 or it wll melt your food.

Yummy.

Another good one: rice pudding, with raisins, and with meringue on top. Yum!

I went to that site, and did a search on “Emeril macaroni and cheese”, and it came up with ten recipes! I printed out one of the ones that got a 5-star rating. 🙂

 I love raisins out of the box but not in anything else. My rice pudding must be raisin-free.
Try currants, they may fit the bill.

I let them soak for a minute in hot water then pop them on whatever or in a recipie.

Do you have the cinnamon or nutmeg on top or is that a bit much?

I like the cinnamon on top, along with the meringue, and nice big, fat, juicy dark raisins on the inside. 😃

AngelicDoctor… Have you tried Licorice Altoids yet… mmmm I ordered a case of them!!!
Licorice Altoids?.. Hhhmmmm, I am intrigued. I like to think of the courage and adventurousness [that a word?] of those pioneers who first put together unthinkable food combinations: such as peanutbutter and chocolate… or the pretzel and chocolate. Combining the salty and the sweet is sometimes a leap of faith.

Licorice Altoids?.. hmmm, I am intrigued, and yet also a little bit afraid…
