OK, then…
SAVORY- Tie for real hot dogs, not what you folks in other parts of the country eat, and Italian beef. Hot dog must be kosher beef (Vienna is traditional, but I like Best best). It is placed on a steamed poppy-seeded hot dog bun. The condiments are bright yellow mustard, neon green pickle relish, finely chopped white onion, a cucumber spear, a pickle spear, two tomato wedges, sport peppers and a dusting of celery salt. Italian beef was invented in Chicago, and must be eaten on french bread cut to the desired length. The bread is briefly dipped in the juice. The juice is created by simmering the meat with onions, green peppers and Italian spices (crock pots do this well). The meat is sliced and loaded into the french bread. I like green peppers on mine.
SALTY- Plain potato chips with sour cream, on the side, to dip.
SWEET- Fannie May trinidads.
BACON- Homemade chicarones with bleu cheese.
Let us not forget the mother of all comfort foods, pot roast and gravy with either polish noodles (noodles in onion gravy) or mashed potatoes that have been baking with the pot roast.
