On the original topic, there’s always

Cogito ergo sum, cogito.

I think, therefore I am, I think.

Praestet fides supplementum! Faith supplies for all defects. Or something alonf those lines. It’s part of a verse from an old Latin hymn that I no longer remember the name of.

Tantum ergo.

Tantum ergo sacramentum
Veneremur cernui
Et antiquum documentum
Novo cedat ritui
Praestet fides supplementum
Sensuum defectui

Cornelia sub arbore sedet.

which is kinda an inside joke among latin students using a certain series of text books.

  • Et tu, Blute? Then so falls Popeye.
You forgot:

Sensuum defectui
Praestet fides supplementum! Faith supplies for all defects. Or something alonf those lines. It’s part of a verse from an old Latin hymn that I no longer remember the name of.
…And you really need the *[sensuum] defectui *part to get to the “defects” part of your translation. (Otherwise, *praestet fides supplementum *is just a fragment along the lines of “may faith grant support”)

Memento homo, quia pulvis es, et in pulverem reverteris.
(Remember man, that dust you are, and to dust you shall return.)

Quando omni fluncus mortati. - The Red Green Show
(When all else fails, play dead.) ?? 🙂

That works just as well for me! I like it short and sweet…

I have a hard time picking favorites of anything I really like, but amongst the most memorable Latin phrases for me is just three words- “peregrinantem in terra”- describing the Church (from Eucharistic Prayer III not the Roman Canon :bigyikes:-- Quick throw me out the Traditional Catholicism forum!!)

Hence my user name, which is a derivative of the phrase.

Incidentally, for all you folks who are fans of “semper ubi sub ubi:”

I once had a student show up to class in a homemade tee-shirt bearing that phrase (written in magic marker!) I, brand-new Latin teacher that I was, taught it to the class, as much for mnemonic purposes as for the joke, but it turns out the only thing eighth grade boys are likely to remember is "the teacher said ‘underwear’ in class "…:whacky:

My favorite Latin phrase is:

Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini.
Our help is in the name of the Lord
A while back I went to get a Rosary blessed by a fantastic priest - he’s Dominican and although quite young (or at least young-looking) is quite high up in the hierarchy of the order and wears about half-a-dozen different hats very well besides.

It was quite lovely to hear him begin (although not in Latin) with the old formula ‘Our help is in the name of the Lord/who made heaven and earth’. :getholy:

I don’t know if this has already been posted (lots of posts to this thread!!) but my fave is:

Unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam!

(One, holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church!)

and of course:

In nomine patris et fili et spiritus sancti. Amen.

(In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen)

I wish I knew how to fully read/write/speak Latin! Born too late. Darn it.

Simon

Often in this forum, I see people’s signature lines with an interesting phrase written in Latin. I would love if some of your Catholic Answer Members would share some of your favorite Latin Quotes, that are inspiring to you or a pillar within your own Catholic faith.
Thanks, God Bless!
Me transmitte sursum, Calidoni!

(Beam me up Scotty!)

Cuando omni flunkus, moritati.
When all else fails, play dead.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. I’m a Red Green fan.)
ROFL

“Ceterum censeo Carthaginem delendam esse”

I may be wrong, but “Furthermore, I think that Carthage must be destroyed”.

“omnia dicitur fortior si dicta in Latinam”

“everything that is said is stronger if said in Latin”

I don’t think I know enough to have a favorite, but the one I use the most is ad infinitum which I think translates as “and to infinity”… comes up a lot in my circles. 😉
