What is your favorite Western and who is your favorite actor in a Western?

When I was growing up we had many westerns to watch on television and many westerns to watch at the cinema.

John Wayne is my favorite actor in a Western and I think his movie The Searchers is my favorite.

My second favorite Western is How the West Was Won in which he had a small part.

Anyone else want to share your favorite Western and actor whether it was from the cinema or tv?
 
My favorite is Open Range, with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall.
It’s said to have the most realistic gunfight in the movies.
The music and landscapes are beautiful.

I liked that movie too. I wish they would make more westerns these days, but I think they are sensitive to how Native Americans are portrayed.

El Dorado and The Cowboys are my two favorite westerns of all time. Both with the Duke.
I could watch either every day for all my life and not get bored.
BUT I also like the modern 90s westerns. Young Guns 1 and 2 and in particular Tombstone are my guilty favorites.

Eastwood movies are good, and The Good the Bad and The Ugly is my favorite of those, but who has got that kind of time!?
 
Definitely *The Good the Bad and the Ugly. *For me, no other western comes close, not even John Wayne westerns, not even Sam Peck(name removed by moderator)ah westerns, not even other Sergio Leone westerns.

Picking an actor is tougher but I’ll go for Eli Wallach as Tuco in The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
 
*True Grit *(The real one, starring John Wayne, though the one starring Jeff Bridges is not bad).

I like The Searchers also.

And True Grit (the older version–I haven’t seen the new one).

And Blazing Saddles.

Friends of mine liked the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns, but I never went for those. I like my good guys to be good guys and my bad guys to be bad guys.

There’s one called “My Name Is Nobody” that is fun.

And “The Cheyenne Social Club,” and “The Shootist.”

I’m not sure who my favourite actor among those would be, probably Gregory Peck who was a favourite of my late mother.

Love Rio Bravo, High Noon, both True Grits, Liberty Valance, Wyatt Earp…

Actor? Yeah, the Duke. Jimmy Stewart. Gregory Peck.
 
Support Your Local Sheriff with James Garner is my favorite western. I love a good comedy.😃

John Wayne would be my favorite cowboy with Jimmy Stewart a close second.
 
Loved Charlton Heston in Will Penny, but hands down BEST movie, High Noon with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelley.
 
I’ve always enjoyed True Grit starring John Wayne, Catholic. Also liked the remake a lot.

But my favorite remains Nevada Smith with Steve McQueen.
 
I have not seen many Westerns, but of the few I’ve seen, I would have to say The Searchers is my favorite. It may in fact have been the first Western I ever saw; we watched it in a film appreciation class I took in my freshman year in college, in the spring of 1989. I recently got it on Blu-ray, and it looks GLORIOUS on that format. 👍

I also liked the remake of True Grit. (dodging rotten fruit from the “remaking a John Wayne classic is a travesty” crowd)
 
High Noon is sensational and my favorite. A superb action movie, and a classic western.

Gary Cooper was sensational.

But Brad Pitt as Jesse James in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” is my favorite performance of an actor in a western and one of the more recent gems of the genre. It’s the best of the “modern western” films.
 
John Wayne is my favorite actor in westerns, without competition. As far as favorite western goes, that is a considerably harder question. It would be either True Grit or Rio Bravo, If I had to make a choice I would probably go with the latter, if only because it features Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, both of whom sing, and for me it’s the quintessential Wayne movie…a man alone against the odds, defending all that is good. Too bad it doesn’t have “The Ballad of High Noon”, though…

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Same with actor…can’t name just one so…

Alan Ladd in Shane
John Wayne in Stagecoach and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Jimmy Stewart in all those Anthony Mann westerns in the 50s
 
Shane is my all time favorite.
Love how the West Was Won as well.

I like to see the actor James Stewart in almost anything he’s ever done, western, drama or comedy.
