Did they had a good cause? Or a bad one? As far as i know the bible preach peace. I understand that at first they were just trying to protect christianity when muslims were attacking the Byzantine Empire but then they rather attacked muslims in the holy land. So what is your opinion about the crusades?

The Crusades had various reasons some religious some were conquering or reclaiming the Holy Land. While at a time the Crusades were successful like the First Crusade, they were poorly maintained and were eventually lost to the Turks.

In my opinion the Crusades were good at one point of time, it brought back many things that helped advance Europe, but like anything else have their bad stuff

The Crusades were a series of wars fought over the course of centuries in different places for different reasons involving different groups of peoples. It’s not as simple as giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

The first Crusade was fought to protect Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land after it had been invaded by the Muslims. I think it is more accurately seen as a defensive war rather than an offensive one. The other Crusades are another story.

Not sure they’re over.

Stay INFIDEL STRONG fellow pork-eating crusaders.

My understanding is that we attacked them only after they took over the holy land.

Did autrocities happen? Yes, but war tends to bring out the worst in people. I believe that the intent was good and they get a bad wrap only because it involved the Catholic church.

I have noticed that I do not have to address the crusades nearly as often when debating my protestant friends since 911.

Self Defense sometimes means going on the offense. Think of WWI or WWII. We did not want to become involved but were pretty much forced into it. Once in, it behooves a person or group to fight to preserve the most life possible. Sometimes it takes getting on the offense to secure the peace. That is my view of the Crusades. I also think that day may come again and sooner than we may like to think. When Muslims tell us that we must die, we should take that to heart and be prepared to put an end to the threat of massacre. It may mean tremendous loss of life, however, it could be the preservation of our own lives and those of our descendants.

Considering how many Christians and future Christians we lost (souls to Islam) in the North Africa region alone, methinks we need to ramp up the Crusades again. Why wait until it is too late*** again?*** All should be facilitated with prayer of course.

Christians losses are uncomparable to Jewish losses in the reason.
Thousands of muslims have also lost souls in that reason due to war
everything about what has happened there is awful we need to make peace instead of more war

When Muslims, u mean muslim extremists is ur answer to kill all muslims in that area

The cause of the Crusades was the nationalistic Islam taking control of The Holy Land and other Christian sites.

Today, we still have countries being taken over by nationalistic Islam at the expense of Christians, over much Africa and Asia.

It’s not just a difference in religion, but a nationalistic (survival mode) war caused by Global Jihad, so we don’t just turn the cheek.

So, I think the Crusades are still relevant today, a necessary thing if not a good thing.

They also took over what is now Spain and half of France before the First Crusade was called. :knight2::onpatrol:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh… There is the rub isn’t it? Islam is an expansionist by force religion by today’s practice. You would let all those Christian souls die then?

Crusades are** requisite** methinks.

Current events prove the tipping point is*** well*** past.

 What Christian would think that?

If given the chance, Christians prefer to fight their battles in the arena of ideas.

However such is not available today now is it?

Islam was the cause so they get all the BLAME for everything that happened during the crusades. I think we need to start another one.

I believe that all Christian, and especially Catholic, work, within the areas of Islamic cultures (if not nations for *it is *pervasive like Catholicism), has been to better the living conditions and increase the live birth-rate of the local indigenous populations. It may be uninvited (and perhaps at times unwelcome) but not malfeasant. Even where we have gone to war.
I know, before I left Iraq, that home construction there was booming, electricity was flowing at least 4hrs a night (unknown under Saddam except at his own palaces). They didn’t want us there, but they didn’t really want us to leave either.

I know that some of our guys were removed from the theater to serve in Afghanistan and they reported that over there we were installing plumbing, and the biggest obstacle was convincing home owners to plumb their houses, due to their fear of muddy floors.

People don’t need to fear Catholics (and Christians in general) because we are not that way. It’s kind of like the U.S. Military, people don’t expect atrocious behaviour from us, and you can tell that expectation is well-founded. That is because, with our military might and prowess, if we were not a discilined and handily self-regulated body, they would kill themselves and their own children because they wouldn’t like the way that we could do it.

Precisely. Once again Islamic expansion induces Christians to intervene. Islam as demonstrated by the Islamic Leader Hussein, was expanding into Kuwait so it could control the Oil and crush it’s enemies economically.

I reiterate: Islamic expansion is the culprit.** Not** Bush.** Not** the Catholic Church. But Islam and it’s leaders.

The Crusades were the result of the attacks yes to the Holy Land and the killings of the peregrines that made the trip to visit the Holy places there, but also from the expansion of the muslim armies that at one point conquered most of Spain and parts of Italy.
Yes Italy was partly conquered by muslims, they completely dominated Sicily and parts of Calabria and Puglia, the most Southern parts of the boot.
Recently the Pope canonized 800 saints that were martired at Otranto in 1480 when they were offered the chance of either converting to islam or face execution (beheading) by the muslims that had won the battle.
Does that ring a bell?
With current events?

So we are looking at war events that were triggered as a reaction to outside forces.
It has been shown that in effect the battle of Otranto was the equivalent to the 9/11 of our days.
The known world after the fall of the Roman Empire had lost most of its commerce and devolved into many mini states. This battle sorts of was the catalist for the beginning of the reunification of western Europe, a process that has not ended yet 😉
Were there abuses and injustices commited during this wars?
I would respond, which war has not?
No war can claim that unfortunately. We Catholics pray for peace and by that token war should be our last recourse in settling human affairs.

The important thing to learn about the crusades I believe is summed up in this quote:
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”
Key on the “remember” which is also equivalent to “learn” “understand”.
Not rely solely on anti religious propaganda that always ascribe the “evils” of the crusades to “religion”
Go count the people murdered in the 20th century in the name of Communism/Atheism, see how that stacks up.
