What Kind Of Church Is This?

The reasons I’m interested in checking out this church (repeat “checking out”, not definitely converting) is I love the idea of contemporary music, concert-like lighting, and most of all, my OCD is really bad and I’ve tried everything to get some peace. I thought that returning to the Catholic Church would give me that peace, or guidance from a priest or spiritual direction would, but everything has failed.

As someone who suffers from OCD myself, I have to ask why those actions have failed you? (I dont’ mean to be snarky or anything, I’m genuinely curious.)

Then check it out. My church does tend to use contemporary music (it’s not concert like) and that is something that my wife enjoys as well.

do they have a website? Most churches have a website with an ‘about us’ or a mission statement and even who they are affliated with. Or you could just call and ask them.

I keep getting micro and macro confused. In my question, I mean how do you intellectually deny the fossils, carbon dating, charting and majority of scientists (if the majority believes this) who believe we developed from apes or human-like beings.

sounds like something that only the medical profession could help you with. Not sure any type of worship, music etc can really help with OCD.

I don’t know. My psychiatrist told me that OCD can get better but that it won’t (or probably won’t) go away completely.
My priests advice is to just switch my thoughts to something else when I start to have an obsession. That doesn’t work.

That’s probably true. It’s manageable but not curable. I will still have flares although I consider myself in somewhat of a remission right now.

I know priests mean well but unless they have experience dealing with OCD this isn’t very good advice. It’s nearly impossible to to that on a regular basis…ruminating on subjects is pretty common with OCD.

I hoped delving deeper into the Bible, which they do, and listening to sermons more relevant to my life, albeit long sermons, might help me. He did mention that their sermons are about 40 minutes long, though on their website I saw one or two that were 50+ minutes and I don’t like that. My hope is that they’d be interesting or relevant to my life that they could hold my attention, though I’m doubtful.

Yeah, if his advice was helpful I’d be well now and wouldn’t need to talk to him about it so much.

The medical profession hasn’t helped me much either. Some OCD things are better than they were years ago, so I hesitate to go off my medications but I’m still miserable. And don’t even get me started on how much I’ve paid for therapy with a variety of therapists over many years. One even asked ME what OCD is, when I first came to her and told her that I have it.

I’ve already explained the first two. As to your final point, it commits two logical fallacies: Argumentum ad populum and argumentum ad verecundiam. I also feel our side conversation here is derailing the thread, so I will respectfully withdraw at this point.

this is pure curiosity and not a criticism but how did you arrive at the idea that a long sermon, even a relevant one could help with OCD? or do you believe that you will learn something that will help you cope with your illness?

I know of many great books that can help with those who suffer. One that helped me was 'Why bad things happen to good people."

What you posted is way over my head. As far as derailing the thread, it’s ok. I’m the OP. Or if you’d participate, I could start a new thread?

Yes, I believe, or actually hope, that I might learn something that would help me cope.

I read that book many years ago. It helped a little.

Because of Charismatic elements, some folks see any “raising your hands” as “Pentecostal”.

Now I have to do this

Those of us who have known how hardline Pentecostals are (no makeup, dresses only on women, no modern music) do some head scratching at that one. Heck, Tim Hawkins would not be allowed to even enter many Pentecostal congregations! He is too worldly.

If you’d like, I can scour my hard drive for an old post I saved where I explained the Evolutionary Argument against Naturalism on a different forum and send that to you in a private message. It might help you better understand my position on the subject.
