I have heard that masturbating is a sin? Is this true and what kind of sin? Mortal or venial?

It is because it is the use of the sexual gift, given to us by God for procreation, in a way that is not open to new life. It is self-pleasure instead of the giving of oneself to another in sexual intercourse within Marriage. Several factors can affect the type of sin it is. The best place to discuss this is in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Some sexual coveting, genuinely purposeful sexual coveting, by one looking for a prospective lifetime mate, is perfectly alright. That’s why God made girls good-looking, and why God gave boys eyes that appreciate them. Even this should be accompanied by prayer and the sacraments, though.

Masturbation is simply a release of sexual tension. Everyone, whether men or women do masturbate. Some more often then others. I certainly agree, that one should confine sexual pleasure to marriage, but most people in this world are not married, but single. So sexual relief must result in the long run.
We as humans do not like to admit that we are more biological then we admit. Many think they can control their sensual urges through their intellect alone. But we are also creatures of passion as well. God knows are strengths and our weaknesses.

Im sorry, but i dont agree with what you say at all. It is CLEAR that God did not give us genital organs for self stimulation, masturbation is always sinful because you are misusing a gift from God. And when you generalise people please dont include me, whether you commit this sin regularly or not is not my problem, but dont reassure others that its “natural and healthy” to do it. Its very very wrong, which is why you feel guilty after doing it, although with time your heart hardens to the feeling of guilt. That does not make it right.
Ask yourself a question, would you still do it if Jesus Himself appeared in front of you.
Is this sin gloryfing God?? I think its obvious its a sin.
Good rule of thumb is to imagine God “replaying that action” on the day of judgement, would you be proud of it??

In what way? I don’t see the logic.
I’m single. I don’t mastrubate. I can serve up a dozen other names of single people I know who don’t mastrubate. It’s a matter of having one’s priorities staight. There is no physical “need” to mastrubate. Your body covers all of its necessary functions without your help, and this is no different.

i don’t but it’s an embarassing and common compulsion.
it can only be overcome through God’s grace. i would say that the majority of young men probably have masterbated at one time or another. but, it definitively can be overcome. it takes prayer, frequent confession, and reception of the eucharist.
masterbation is basically lust which can lead to all sorts of sinful behavior.

Any habitual temptation will be overcome only through much prayer, and the Grace of God.

Confess. Pray, a lot. Have faith! Put up pictures of the Lord in strategic locations, or as dekstop wallpaper, if your computer is involved. Have a very specific rule of what to do when you feel tempted: some people go for a walk, others may have a friend they call, some may have a specific video game to play. The point is, when you are tempted, you are REQUIRED to do your safety activity, or go to your safety place. As soon as you are tempted, read the Bible! Put on EWTN. Avoid MENTAL sin. In other words, don’t let yourself think about it. Avoid anything that overly excites you. Very, very often, the temptation comes not from things you see or do, but from your thinking about it, or saying, “gee I could do this,” or convincing yourself that you can look at a temptation without giving in. Don’t fall for it! It gets easier once, as now you do, you know that it is truely and gravely sinful. Think to yourself, when you might consider it, that when you do it it makes Satan REALLY happy. Seriously, he doesn’t like anything better, he feels like he has beaten Jesus! Those ideas and thoughts all prove helpful to most.

This is a mortal sin. The great Father Corapi said that and many priest and the Church have said that. I even beilve it is in the Caticism (sp) that it is a mortal sin.

“Overcoming the enormous temptation” is easy. I said it up above: “Don’t look!” Don’t check out what’s “shakin’ by.” Not only don’t leer at every woman’s body – don’t leer at any woman’s body. No pornography. No Victoria’s Secret catalog. No newspaper underwear or bikini ads. DON’T LOOK.
You’ll masturbate once or twice after you begin starving your sexual psyche of the “ammunition” it needs to fantasize – sexual memories – and then your sexual memories will be completely “burned up.” Lacking in “fantasizing fuel,” your sexual psyche will begin surrendering control of your sexual aspect over to your free will within a week.
Within a month, you’ll be a man with dignified self control, as God intended.
Make sure that you WANT to stop looking and masturbating. Find a desire for self control in your own lack of personal dignity. Imagine yourself in the middle of the act of masturbating when God comes in the sky at the end of time.
When you are being judged, and God says, “Well, Cat Man, what did you do with the life I gave you on Earth?,” what will your answer be? Will it be, “Well, God, my greatest achievement is that I j - - - - d o - - about 1,000 times.”?
I’m sorry to address you like that, but these things are truth. They are good to keep in mind.
In any event, self-control is easy – just *persistently *refuse to look. When you feed your sexual psyche sexual memories is where the point of control is – and there, right there, is when the sin is occurring.
