Sorry if this is the wrong thread. Maybe you can guide me to the right place? My question is this: What makes us Catholic? The reason I ask is I have family members attending a non denominational church and they are calling themselves Catholic.
Augustine had a quick response
“5. For in the Catholic Church, not to speak of the purest wisdom, to the knowledge of which a few spiritual men attain in this life, so as to know it, in the scantiest measure, indeed, because they are but men, still without any uncertainty (since the rest of the multitude derive their entire security not from acuteness of intellect, but from simplicity of faith,)— not to speak of this wisdom, which you do not believe to be in the Catholic Church, there are many other things which most justly keep me in her bosom. The consent of peoples and nations keeps me in the Church; so does her authority, inaugurated by miracles, nourished by hope, enlarged by love, established by age. The succession of priests keeps me, beginning from the very seat of the Apostle Peter, to whom the Lord, after His resurrection, gave it in charge to feed His sheep, down to the present episcopate. And so, lastly, does the very name of “Catholic”, which, not without reason, amid so many heresies, the Church has thus retained; so that, though all heretics wish to be called Catholics, yet when a stranger asks where the Catholic Church meets, no heretic will venture to point to his own chapel or house.”
Augustine: from
ch 4 against Manichaeus This chapter and the whole letter is worthwhile to read
Lumen_Christi:
Is it because they’re not under the authority of the Pope? Would it be because they don’t believe in the sacraments, specifically the Eucharist? Or is it because their pastor can not be traced back to Peter? Maybe all of it?
Yes, All of it.
Lumen_Christi:
The church they go to recites the Apostles Creed and is even on their website. At the very end they put an asterisk to explain the part that says one, holy, catholic and apostolic church as the universal church.
I’m just wondering how I can break it down and unpack it for them. I’m thinking of starting with authority? What do you think?
What’s the name of their church. As a suggestion, Look up who founded it, and when that happened. It gets to the point quickly.
