What mishaps have you seen in church?

The mishap that sticks out in my mind is a bride taking a tumble down the stairs. For some reason, she went up to the choir loft before the ceremony, and as she was coming down the steps… boom! boom! boom! The fall was clearly heard by the guests, and of course, everyone turned around to see what happened.

At my current parish, we once had not one, but TWO sparrows flying and chirping through the building all Sunday morning, through four masses. One of them finally took refuge in the choir loft, which is where I usually take refuge as well. 😄

We all thought Father should have changed the gospel to the passage about how God cares for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field.

Alas, Father did not agree with our brilliant idea.

Some people complain if you change the reading. Maybe he was chicken. 🐔

I once saw a YouTube video (posted by an anti-Catholic) that showed a statue of Our Lady falling over and smashing during a procession. It broke my heart with it. Of course the comment section was full of Protestants exclaiming that “their idols are falling!”

How embarrassing for those poor men carrying it 😦
I have to wonder if the older man who seems to have lost his grip causing the imbalance was perhaps a little too old to be hefting and balancing a big heavy statue on a platform.

I really think that all statues carried in procession like that should be made of unbreakable materials, just in case of that sort of mishap.

It wasn’t during mass but at there was a wooden St Joseph statue at my old primary school which some poor kid knocked off a table and the head fell off!

Another kid then picked up the head and said “Behold St Joseph has been beheaded”

Luckily the caretaker managed to glue it back on.

We did have the issue of discovering during a Mass in wet weather, that the new roof was not quite as waterproof as it was supposed to be. I think someone placed a cloth on the spot, just so people knew where it was. The floor was stone, so it was quite slippery when wet.

In my old church the organ was at the very front in the church. During the St Lucy celebrations the children and youth choirs were singing standing on the steps in front of the whole parish. The church was dark and the only lights are the lit candles the singers were holding. There was a young boy about 2 years old that was walking up and down along the pews and then getting all the way to the organ before a parent got hold of him. About 5 minutes later he started to walk again and then ran to the organ and stepped on the foot pedals. His voice matched the organ in power when he started screaming and the singers jumped as they had no idea what was about to happen. The organ was switched off until it was supposed to be used again.

Why people let their toddlers wander up and down the aisles during Mass is a mystery to me.
Last Sunday I was at Mass and a little girl about 2 was wandering around loose like that and then she went out a side door of the church into a little room where there was a Mary shrine and an exit. Me, another lady in my pew, and a deacon who came down the aisle to watch all were staring ready to pounce if this little kid started out the exit. Fortunately her brother about age 12 came from somewhere further back in the church and took her back to her seat before that happened. I have no idea where the parents were.

People in that comment section say horrible things about Our Lady and the Church. Should I bother debating with them, or is it best to ignore people like that on the internet?

It’s Youtube. Ignore them and pray for them.
They are the usual Bible thumpers who claim we’re all idolators because we have statues in church. Your arguing with them is not going to convince them.

I’ve seen the collection plate dropped and an altar boy trip and fall when trying to kneel (which was me when I was kid.)

A few months ago, the organist starting playing the Pink Panther theme song when mass had ended and people were shuffling out.

There was a story I heard about two alter servers in different parts of the world who were serving mass. They both dropped one of the cruets. In one case the priest lost his temper, yelled and screamed and threw the altar server out of the church. When he gerw up that altar server went on to become the atheist Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia.
In the other case the priest laughed it off and the mass went on. That altar server went on to become Bishop Fulton Sheen.

The Pink Panther theme song was played as Mass ended and people were leaving?!
That is horrible!

It wasn’t the song that ended mass. That was finished. The priest had made his way outside already and half the church had emptied. It actually brought a chuckle to a lot of people.

I can’t imagine it was easy, but it was well done and unusual to hear on a pipe organ.

I like a bit of contemporary music on organ. I don’t think that’s unusual outside mass, music students often use church organs for practice as it’s not the most widely available instrument.
